Without the use of his legs, and having no wheelchair or work, 32 year-old paraplegic Mbuotidem Okorie struggled to get around the streets of his hometown of Uyo on his hands, begging for food. It was a stark contrast to his dream of owning a shoemaking business.
“I was begging on the streets just to survive,” he
says.
Nigeria suffers from very high levels of youth
unemployment. For those with disabilities, finding work is particularly hard,
and there is little social protection on offer.
From dream
into reality
Mbuotidem was nominated by officials from his home
state of Akwa-Ibom for the social investment programme called Shell LiveWIRE,
which offers knowledge and support to young entrepreneurs, helping them to turn
ideas into successful businesses. The Shell Petroleum Development Company of
Nigeria (SPDC) broadened the scheme in 2014 to include people with
disabilities. Around 180 disabled people took part.
Mbuotidem trained as a shoemaker through Shell
LiveWIRE, which also provided him with a wheelchair. When he completed the
course he received financial assistance to start his own business using his new
skills.
Now he makes and sells shoes in his own shop. “I
no longer have to beg,” he said.
Mbuotidem he is one of around 5,700 young
Nigerians to have benefited from Shell LiveWIRE since launched in the country
in 2003.
“The Shell LiveWIRE Nigeria programme is a first
step in an exciting journey to success,” said Nedo Osayande, Sustainable
Development and Community Relations manager at SPDC. “This is the first time
the programme is focusing on people with disabilities. We are sure they will
continue the successes of thousands previous Nigerian participants.”
Helping others
Agnes Udo, who is severely hearing and speech
impaired, survived on the charity of friends and family until she took part in
Shell LiveWIRE. She now runs a successful poultry farm, using her business
training and start-up grant.
Thirty-year old Tom Ezekiel,
who is blind, was unemployed before starting the training. Even before
finishing the course, he too had opened a chicken farm.
“I was doing nothing before the training,” Tom
says. “With the support of the programme, I am really pleased that I am now
employed.”
LiveWIRE also offers training for disabled people
already in work who want to improve their skills or set up on their own.
Although 32 year-old Joseph Richard lost his sight
when he was15, he manages a shop selling ceremonial beads that are an important
part of Nigerian culture.
“I learnt how to improve my bead making skills and
how to be independent,” Joseph says. “I also learnt how to run a
business.”
Joseph is now planning to set up his own
bead-making company, a venture that could create employment for others.

Helping others makes me happy & fulfilled...God bless them
Love my blackberry for the following following reasons.... 1.Removable Battery – Knowing that batteries go bad over time, I do not understand why some cell phone manufacturers build phones with non-removable batteries. Gladly, this is not the case with BlackBerry. 2.BBM Social – If you are a developer, the BBM Social Platform API will provide you with access to the social features and functionality of the BlackBerry Messenger, all from within your app. 3.Peek-a-Boo – Newer BlackBerry smartphones allow you to sneak a peek at your latest notifications and messages without the need to switch or exit the current app you are using. 4. BlackBerry Messenger – Before WhatsApp, Viber, and all the other new messaging applications arrived the BlackBerry Messenger was king. Many of its features were copied by its competitors and it is still the most secured messaging app on the market. Best of all, it’s FREE! 5.Expandable Memory – Fit in as many gigabytes as you want! With flexible memory card options, you don’t have to be limited to phone sets that have a set amount of internal memory. 6. Lastly the subscription part. With my Blackberry 1500 subscription I browse with my smartphone for one month without any interuption. Blackberry rocks jooor. Stellasmiles@live.com

people like this make me buy things that i don't need just to support them and I hate it when people think their disability gives them the right to remain on the street.
Good morning Linda. Shell`s support will really help them aim above the stars and achieve their dreams. Thumbs up to this initiative.

This is soooo nice. It's sad to think that many of them actually have no dreams. So settled are they in the begging business. Sadly, this project cannot get to every disabled person in Nigeria. We need more projects like this.
Great news
Thanks SPDC, God bless you for making their dreams come true.

good morning linda
I have been using BlackBerry as my main phone for almost five years now and here are some things I can think of:
* better battery life
* nice form factor / good feel
* great keyboard
* good messaging product (BBM)
* non-touchscreen input (more precise, keeps screen clean)
* low cost, low data usage
* familiarity (to people who have used BlackBerry for work)
* push-based notification
* great email functionality
* more professional appearance, brand recognition
* easily unlocked from carrier (versus iPhone)
* good for travelling (some have dual CDMA/ GSM radios and carrier plans)
* robustness / durability
* better reception / call quality (some models)
*security
Good step, I hope others emulate

I have always used a blackberry, not because I don't have an option of using any other phone but because I love the blackberry phone! Currently using one but it recently started having problems since it fell and the screen broke! A friend offered to get me this newly hyped phone but a lesser version of it but I said I preferred a blackberry, he termed me obsolete! Well, that's just me, I'll pick a BB over any phone anytime because its so flexible and wonderful to operate, with an awesome look to go with, oh! D joy it brings! Wining this is going to make my year!
Don't mess with Bee and her BB *wink*
