Four more Ebola patients discharged – Health Minister

Four more patients have been certified clean and discharged from the Ebola Isolation center in Lagos after undergoing treatment for the deadly disease. The four patients include two male doctors, the nurse who had earlier escaped from the isolation center and ran to Enugu and a female patient who was on admission at the time Patrick Sawyer was hospitalized at the First Consultant Hospital.

The news of their discharge was disclosed in a statement released today by the Minister of Health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu and signed by his his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Mr. Dan Nwomeh. Read parts of the statement after the cut...
“The Minister of Health Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu has announced that four additional confirmed cases of Ebola Virus Disease who have been managed successfully and are now disease free have been discharged home today. They include two male medical doctors and one female nurse. The three participated in the treatment of the index case while the fourth person was a female patient at the time the index case was on admission. This brings to five the total number of patients diagnosed with Ebola Virus Disease who have now been discharged from hospital.”
On Saturday August 16th, the Health Minister announced that the first Nigerian to be diagnosed of EVD, a female doctor, had been discharged after she was treated and certified cured.

The Minister also stated that the total number of cases of the Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria remained at 12 while the number of deaths from the disease was four and that the number of people under surveillance in Lagos is 189 while in Enugu is 6.

God is in control! Read this earlier and I felt a certain wave of calm wash all over me! I've been having ebola induced paranoia and hysteria. You really have to commend the Lagos state government, the doctors that came out to give their time and energy (selflessly) and most of all the Ministry of health! If this thing can be tackled like this, WTF is going on in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea? Is it sheer foolishness?

Goes to show that you don't need a magic serum for your situation to be different! At the end of the day it pays to be prayerful. I pray it remains at 12 and they all recover fully without any long term health issues (because ebola survivors usually end up with some sort of health issue). Uganda tackled an ebola outbreak in 2012, it was well contained, I'm glad Nigeria can say the same. This is my proudest moment as a Nigerian.

Please these our health officials should stop carrying rumours and distorting information, and kindly stop deceiving NIGERIANS, NOT all of these people under isolation tested positive to Ebola, some of them never caught it and after days of being under surveillance, they released them, so pls be clear when you say they 'discharged ebola patients', they never had it, the nurse that ran to enugu, was it ever confirmed that she had it? NO, so @ Ministry of Health, pls stop playing polictics with the situation, stop the false hype and please stop feeding people *bull*, like we got the magic cure to Ebola and people are getting better, please just stop, we need help because most of the confirmed patients have actually died...

Linda pls verify your news before jumping to post, esp sensitive ish like this

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry but you two are foolish! If you've done your research well you'd see that a certain number of persons have recovered from ebola in the past and including this recent outbreak without any magic serum! If it's caught on time and supportive therapy is started early, you have high chances if recovering from the disease. Why do you think they said 50-90% of people infected survive! Dr. Writbol that was given the serum, didn't you read where he stated that blood containing antibodies was collected from a 13year old boy that was under his care, who recovered from the disease. So my "dears" people survive if identified on time and God is on their side. I know the Nigerian govt lies to us a lot, but so far, so good CNN reported the same thing, I doubt WHO would let our yeye government deceive the world, they have officials on ground, so does the CDC! Sometimes have faith.

Anonymous said...

My thoughts exactly. Were they actually infected? What drugs did they use? Everything is politics in Nigeria, even with this ebola issue. Its every man for himself.

Anonymous said...

I'm scheduled to come home next month.....hopefully this will have died down before I arrive Lagos.

Having people actually cured of Ebola is a wonderful thing. But please lets not make a fool out of ourselves in front of the whole world! The whole world is cringing because of this Ebola thing, the whole world is crying that there isn't any cure for it. If Nigeria has a cure, would it not be right to share it with the rest of the world? At least we can for once say we are breaking new grounds in this modern age for the whole of humanity, and not just accepting like we accept everything from aid to technology. If on the other hand, one of the experimental drugs has worked, then we should do well by giving a feedback to those concerned and share with our African brothers and sisters the rays of hope we just sighted. The minister of health should please sound more professional in giving out these information. Even the US hasn't declared that the doctors given the first doses of the experimental drugs free from the virus.

Anonymous said...

It's really disturbing and crazy how people reel out rumours in the name of news! Can someone tell us the exact medication used? The procures! The regimen! And all. How cure able is the VIRUS?( Not bacteria or fungi) Are the 'discharged and cured' patients rid of the virus? Are we (Nigerians) still this frugal minded? ????

Anonymous said...

careful with the way you use the word 'cure'. I am sure she tested a false positive and went on to test negative In that case she was never ill and so was never cured. This presumably is another female doctor apart from Adadevoh, who we know recieved Zmapp on Sunday.
