Made-in-Nigeria vehicles to roll out next month – FG

Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Samuel Ortom has revealed the Federal Government's plans to roll out made-in-Nigeria vehicles into the market next month, June 2014. The Minister made this known when he received a delegation from Automobile Peugeot, France in his office in Abuja, Punch reports.

The minister, while addressing the delegation which included the company's Vice President, Mr. Yves Moulin, said the newly introduced auto policy is quite effective and is attracting automobile brands to establish assembly plants in Nigeria. Continue...
"The automotive policy is derived from the National Industrial Revolution Plan, and we are happy with the response we have been getting from the automotive industry worldwide; and with your coming, it shows that this policy is working. When the policy was introduced, people criticised it and most of them do not understand the benefit of the policy. We have had several stakeholders from the automotive industry approaching us to set up assembly plants and spare parts plants in the country. I want to assure up you on behalf of the government that we will do everything to make sure the policy succeeds.” the minister said
Meanwhile the first set of Peugeot cars assembled here in Nigeria would be reeled out next month, says Managing Director, Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Limited, Mr Ibrahim Boyi. He said this was made possible due to the Auto policy placed by the government.

It is not a bad idea though, but the nitty-gritty is based on the fact that, how many people can afford brand new cars in Nigeria? Nigeria is a consuming nation and not a producing nation. Federal Government placed a huge tarrif on clearing of imported cars with a view to discouraging importation of cars. Albeit l support the idea of made in Nigeria vehicles, but how many people can afford them? I also hope this won't breed ccorruption

The so called Minister will be the first to import cars.

I have no issues with the policy.i just hope all due processes and checks will be followed.we don't have a working government or an effective standard organization.
The policy was announced about a year ago and its already set for release?it takes a while to the best of my knowledge and several tests and certifications.
Its not how fast but how well.our FG won't take any responsibilities for manufacturers defects.

After now some morons will say gej is not working. Nissane has set up plant, peugeot has sent up their own planty, employing nigerians, yet the northerners are busy fighting him and try to make the country ungovernable because they want to control the oil wealth in niger delta.

Linda, help me pass this message to the Federal government. One Dana air crash caused a lot of uproar in the aviation industry. Everyday, tens, and hundreds of people perish on tragic auto mishaps on federal high ways. Most of these accidents occur due to substandard, and unworthy vehicles on the roads. The federal government does nothing to checkmate the kinds of vehicles being imported into Nigeria, particularly the poorly manufactured ones in China. Chinese auto manufacturing companies now use Nigerian roads as testing ground, a practice not allowed in their country for safety reasons. In my own opinion, there a huge gap between the rich and the poor in Nigeria. Due to the wealthy and the elites involved in the 2012 Dana air crash, the airline company operating license was confiscated. What has the Government done concerning innocent people who are ghastly burnt to death daily on our highways. Talking about China poorly made vehicles which our illustrious economic magnate, Alhaji Aliko Dangote spearheads, the vehicles kill passengers everyday and cause multiple decrees of road havoc. On a doubt of this piece, there is no way you travel from Lagos to Benin by road without witnessing a Dangote vehicle on a collision with another trailer or commuter vehicle. Please, my dear federal government, before you release your dogs sorry vehicles, make sure they are better than the Chinese made trucks which Dangote is using to decrease the population of Nigeria. Thanks. Sent in by educated illiterate. Email: obianwufestus@yahoo.com

Anonymous said...

Linda, keep us informed abt what is going on in the automotive industry. That is, who is building assembly plants etc. So that we can make informed judgement when it's time to buy a car.

How about we fix our most basic problems first? Pick one out of power, safety, running water. New cars are still a luxury for most of our population. Lets please stop diverting our attention to other non pressing matters. Where are we going to get the power for these assembly or manufacturing plants? Lets please fix that the first and biggest of our problems in this country
