Child labour: 6 year old boy photographed hawking drinks

Here are photos of a little boy, not more than 6 years old, spotted hawking drinks as early as 10 this morning in Lagos. I know some people need to make ends meet to survive but sending a child this young to the street is wrong on every level. This is so heartbreaking to see!

Do you think there should be some kind of punishment for parents/guardians who send an innocent child out on the streets instead of school? I think we should all get involved. Send a child to #schoolnotstreet! See more photos after the cut...

So you are saying poor people should be Jailed for being poor and having children while Tinubu, Danjuma, and co lounge and flenjo in their loots. Waoo. However Outsourcing Nigerian governance maybe very genius.

B'cos Govt is fully responsible for every kid. Infact many people keep having more kids cos of Assurance pay.

Really, Igbo ke? Waoo

Lin Lin, why not set up a charity foundation, maybe open an account to support the poor? Share the account details with LIBers, I'm sure so many people will be willing to help and donate no matter how small. The govt can't do everything by itself, Linda can't do everything by herself but together we can touch lives no matter how small. You might even get donations from big companies, just start somewhere.

If the parents of that child had enough funds, that child would probably be in the classroom and not hawking on the streets. I bet the parents are somewhere else working hard to make ends meet. So stop these senseless campaigns and donate as much as you can since you claim to care

See dumb comments. Even if the mother left him there or they are too poor, child abuse is child abuse.
In cms, d last brt bustop where they board lekki ajah buses, just before u turn left to muson, I pass there to work daily. As early as 6.30am two small children, like 5 years and 2 years are there, selling gala and lacasera, their mother joins them later. I keep asking the children questions, they don't go to school, they say their mother joins them later, sometimes not even at 8am, i've seen the younger one crying for food one early morning, I had to give them money for food, if I knew welfare I would report, cos it's a heart wrenching sight daily in the cold, we can't wait for the government, everyone should do what u can, God will reward you, that's why he made u meet them

Honestly our gov't has failed. The lawmakers should pass a bill. NO CHILD below 18 should be found on the streets. If u cant send dem to school, then don't send them anywhere till they are 18 period!! Again, Linda u hv a voice n as a brand, u can start up an NGO where ppl can contribute monthly to a common purse dat would be used to cater for d very needy children. All u need is to register it n make it known. God bless Nigeria

Sometimes, these kids do not live with their biological parents, they live with relatives. And except you separate them from these people, they will keep sending them out to hawk.

Anonymous said...

Pls they should arrest some parents and tell them not to give birth till they are financially ok.... This will always make me share tears... Not fare

Unknown said...

this child is too small to carry that load, perharbs, the boy may be waiting for an elderly person who is indeed hawker.

Unknown said...

Linda you sometimes need to confirm your stories. i know there are cases of child labour all around. But i dont think this particular child is the one hawking those drinks, apparently he is just watching over it

Why do you say government has failed? How many Nigerians pay tax or insurance to the nation for things like this? Uk is beautiful, it government have provided support for them blah blah. It is through tax payers money. When you work tax is removed before you see your pay slip, you national insurance is also deducted before you see your pay slip too. So pls blame yourselves too. Pay you tax.

Yea lovelylady is right you can start-up something like NGO to help such children God bless as you do so remember you will not regret it. Back to our nigeria govt they should take the child from the parents and send the child to school and punish the parents as well.

You obviously havent left the country.
Primary, secondary and college education is free in the UK....then student loans are given to those that go to Uni.
Education is compulsory up to the age of 18 (before uni), so therefore it is free.
I'm not saying it will work in EVERY country. but it does work!
Why you would assume she meant government should pay for master degrees is beyond me.

When will our country will be in a better state for all of us? God pls help the poor in our country.
