Remember 1986? How Jonathan saved Nigeria from its imminent worst disaster

Sponsored post.
August 21, 1986. 1,700 people and 3,000 herds of cattle and other livestock died after the eruption of a volcanic Lake Nyos in Cameroon. The Lake represents the biggest ecological (flood) threat to Nigeria. This disaster, if allowed to occur, will destroy several states in Nigeria especially Taraba, Benue, Cross River, Kogi and Delta and it is imminent. (Think about Haiti for 1 Minute, that’s a real Disaster there!) What did Jonathan do?
Yes it his Job (Hian)! Were there not many other governments and Presidents in this Country that did nothing about it? But no, he would not wickedly, or like the others before him ignore the future’s ugly reality. President Jonathan gave competent Female Minister Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe the go-ahead and approved 100% funding of $1bn for one of the country’s most ambitious Projects; the Kashimbilla Multipurpose Buffer Dam Project which will not just prevent the devastating flood but harness its potentials to become a Major Source of Life.

The Dam presently at over 90% completion will now serve to ensure;
Water Supply (60,000 Cu.m/Day), Irrigation (Net – 2,000Ha) and provide Electricity - Hydropower generation: (40MW)

The Scope of the Project covers: Construction of the Main Dam; Construction of Water Treatment Plant; Construction of an Access Road; Construction of an Hydropower Plant; Development of Irrigation Network; Construction of Air Strip and Rehabilitation of Kashimbilla - Jato-Aka road (21km). Photos below:

To date, remarkable progress has been achieved in all the various parts of the project. The Kashimbilla Dam project is therefore a proactive preemptive response by the Federal Government of Nigeria to the report of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) of great catastrophe that might result from imminent collapse of Lake Nyos.
What should be done for a man who has done this much? Thank him

What should the electorate do to a democratically elected President for performing his duty? PdP forgot that Jonathan is paid monthly to channel tax payers money to projects and policies that wil better the nation. So we should thank him for what exactly?

My dear Linda, it's the uniformed and the desperate power grabber that is of those view that this administration ain't doing anything. Those that believes that they will in one way or the other benefit from the inevitable looting of Tinubu and his cronies will want and say all ills to the present administration. Am an independent entrepreneur, am battling wit power, bad road, et al, but I do know that progress is being made in these various sector. The rot didn't start 4 yeras ago. It requires systemic planning and not a magic want as know one has that at the moment. My only happiness is that the ruling party has no monopoly to power again, that will in turn keep them to their toes, is the opposition better, I really do not think so, but then I like the pressure they are putting on the administration to do better. I've always had the conviction the GEJ would want to do his best irrespective of all studs albeit He should be careful with some of his advisers. He needs to do more. The problem with Nigeria is that most people are beclouded with sentiments and parochial views and interest.

This is the biggest lie ever. How can the Lake Nyos which is not near the Nigerian border flood your country. The disaster was caused by poisonous gas, how does the dam help in this case. I am Cameroonian and was affected by the Lake Nyos disaster....This post is such a lie that I had to post for the first time in the comments

This post is clearly a lie. Why would they stoop so low for votes. This beats me anyways change is the only constant thing in life. Jonathan has failed it is time for someone else to try the shoe.

OGABA SPEAKSFAIR said...

Miss Fonsie, your comment that this post was a lie is not true.

Lake Nyos is situated on the Cameroon Mountain at an elevation higher than the adjoining Benue and Katsina-Ala plains in Nigeria. The lake flows into the tributaries from which the Katsina–Ala River takes its source, crossing the Nigeria-Cameroon border at a point 108 kilometers from Nyos. The river then proceeds north-westerly into Benue River at a point 40 kilometers east of Makurdi, Benue State

The Kashimbilla Multipurpose Buffer Dam Project by the GEJ Administration was necessary because of the imminent danger of Lake Nyos Dam-break. The major threat to Nigeria is in the highly unstable upper parts of the lake body which holds about 50 million cubic meters of water. An analysis of Lake Nyos dam-break reported by WADASCO (1990) shows that “the flood produced will reach about 19000m2/s at the dam site corresponding to a flow depth of over 18 meters.

The science behind the disaster is fairly simple. Lake Nyos is a deep pool of water sitting in the throat of a dormant volcano which erupted. The magma then released the carbon dioxide and other gases, which travelled upward through the earth and then asphyxiated nearly every living being in the surrounding valley community.

The post mentions that the disaster was caused by the eruption of a volcanic Lake Nyos in Cameroon.

this is bogus. .jonathan in 1986!!!! jonathan was no where near a government appointment talk less in a position to spend $1billion to build a dam n if so why didn't we heart of it wen he was campaigning 4 yes ago? ?? All na lie... another pdp scam!!!!!!!

Useless president

OGABA SPEAKSFAIR said...

@Safiu Mohammed
Yes, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam cost $4.8 billion and is hyped to generate 6000 mw when completed but mind you, the dam and its hydropower plant are massively over-sized as its available power output, based on the average of river flow throughout the year and the dam height, is about 2,000 megawatts, not 6,000.

While the Kashimbilla Multipurpose Buffer Dam Project by the GEJ Administration which also covers Construction of Water Treatment Plant, Construction of an Access Road, Development of Irrigation Network, Construction of Air Strip and Rehabilitation of Kashimbilla - Jato-Aka road (21km) cost $1 billion and is expected to generate 40MW.

Also factor that available power output is based on the average of river flow throughout the year. And therefore you might be able to get as much megawatts as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

Lol,he has done well

Good project, good job, beautiful intention. It is his job and should be part of our expectations. Kudos to him.

But did you just say, 1 billion dolls for the project? Haba! I pity this dear Nation and citizens as our politicians and leaders loot under the umbrella of projects. And I mean, from all parties, APC, PDP, ZAP or whatever party.

It is a shame that nothing gets accounted for. I can't imagine how much Lagos State claimed that the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge was constructed. SMH and pity generations to come.
