Medical negligence in a hospital in Lagos. Read this shocking story

Well, it's not really shocking. Worse things have been done by our doctors to their patients. Twitter user @Elijahbalogun12 reports a case of a woman who suffered medical negligence in a hospital along Egbeda-Akowonjo road. Apparently, this woman had a caesarian operation done at the hospital and the doctors forgot a pad inside her. When the woman figured it out, she stormed the hospital and they treated her coldly. Read the rest of the tweet after the cut...

I doubt this story to be true. If the lady had only been operated on two days before, it is physically impossible for her to be storming in to the doctor's office when she ought to be on bedrest to heal.

Unknown said...

how was the pad discovered? how did she know that a pad was left inside her? what if she is just trying to black-mail the hospital or the doctor? is it possible to discharge a patient after 2days of cs? common, you don't always have to draw a conclusion when you see issues like this, beside why is it that it was the husband that was dragging her out instead of also fighting the doctor? please, people should just be very mindful of how they reach conclusions on issues, always try to gather all available facts before you judge.

These people don't deserve to be called doctors... That was how I lost my big uncle cos of their wickedness and nonchalant attitude. They don't value lives. They don't know what it means for someone you love to die. A lot of them God will require blood from their hands. Lagos state university teaching hospital is nothing but a den of killers. Nothing will make me or any of my loved ones go near that hospital or any general hospital. They made my cousins fatherless and my aunt a widow. Very heartless set of people. He was begging to be treated, they prescribed twice, the same set of drugs for us to buy and which we did. They were just moving up and down refusing to treat him until he gave up the struggle with pain.He died painfully.

To start with, I am not in anyway condoning the behaviour of the medical personnel in this case but please let's not be ignorant. A woman that had CS cannot be prancing around 2 days later ranting that they left a pad in her. A woman that has normal uncomplicated CS surgery is still bed bound by the 3rd day in most cases. I assure you that anyone who has had a major surgery where a pad was forgotten in him/her cannot be up and about. That person will likely be very sick and incapacitated with the medical personnel struggling to know what is causing the severe infection in his/her body/blood stream. I am sure that is why the doctor kicked her out of the office because her accusation of a pad left in her 2 days earlier just makes no sense!!!

yawanow said...

The doctors licensed should be revoked. oh i forgot, this is Nigeria where anything goes. Imagine she had the effrontery to defend herself.
My aunt died last week after one month of child birth due to the lapse on the part of the doctors that performed the operation. May her soul rest in peace.
In the midst of it all, we have good and compassionate doctors.

Anonymous said...

Possible? Yes; I've heard reliable reports of it happening.

But here's the question:
How would she know a pad was left behind in two days ago?
CS operations are performed under general anesthesia in Nigeria.
And if a doctor left a pad inside your abdomen, how would you know?Did you cut yourself open to check?

And women who were operated on in a cesarean section are not
vigorous movers two days later; they may not have started even eating solid food, and would almost certainly still be on admission.
So the circumstances of this smells quite fishy to me.

How is dat possible please? After the CS I believe they closed her up, so how in hell did she see a pad dat was inside her abdominal region so to speak?! And den at d end of every surgery, they count the number of "pads" used, if it's not complete, they'll open d patient up to look for it, at least dats wat they do in teaching hospitals

now, this story sounds funny because how does a person open up her uterus after a caesarian section to find a pad? im guessing she had a pad put in her veejay to help mop up blood and she was discharged like that. Now, its not a doctor's job to remove soaked pads , and why didnt she complain when she was being discharged?. this is not a complete story basically.

Some medical personnel are not just fit for the profession, this same thing happened to my wife, she gave birth and the silly people left a pad in her and she was in pain for 5days before we discovered why she was crying, we were lucky cos it was her second time of giving birth so she figured it was usual cos the first birth was similar to the second but without the pain.

ELENA (HER MAJESTY) said...

Thank you ojare

Tex said...

Nonsense! Issues like this should be properly investigated before being published. The facts don't add up at all. How did she discover the pad???? FYI doctors don't discharge patient 2 days post CS. Earliest is about 5 days. I doubt if a 2 days postoperative patient would have the energies to barge into a doctor's office. The pad was most likely a vaginal pad which is normally put after a vaginal or abdominal delivery to monitor bleeding. Please always get your facts right

ELENA (HER MAJESTY) said...

Hhmmm, really sad but it happens here in Nigeria. Rubbish hospitals and doctors, mtsheeew! I personally experienced something like that at R.JOLAD hosp. Gbagada/new garage almost 2yrs ago.
About 2months after a CS operation, i found out they used a wrong CATGUT for the operation *its the thread used to stitch during an operation, that is naturally degraded by the body's own proteolytic enzymes. Absorption is complete by 90 days, and full tensile strength remains.
But since a wrong CATGUT was used, my suture got infected and started eating out. I changed hospital, had to undergo another operation, altho minor but painful still, and seriessssss of anti-biotics and wound dressing. Took me 7months to heal.
This experience happened to all surgical patients treated at the hosp. for the month of June and July 2013.
They said its a bad batch supplied to them. They apologised VERBALLY, took down our numbers and promised to call but they never did. I didn't follow up, never went back and would NEVER refer someone with an ordinary common cold there. SAD!

Health Care in Nigeria is just a joke, dts hw on Monday we rushed my friends mom to the general hospital close by, she was struggling to breathe, the first hospital we went to told us to take her to the general hospital, *wonder why dey couldn't hv js checked her, d nurse took one look at her and told us to be on our way* she gave us no hope at all.. finally getting to the general hospital, the major entrance that was free frm traffic was locked, we had to pass directly in front of d hospital to connect the next route that would take us to the other entrance, and behold, we were caught in "rush hour traffic" the entire time we spent in traffic just a few meters away frm the hospital entrance was more than the time we spent coming frm home and stopping at the first hospital, then I taught to my self, if in Lagos a lane is reserved for BRT buses why can't one be opened for emergency right in front of government hospitals, secondly, the hospital management well aware of the traffic situation on the other road with d opened entrance, should have left the major entrance open till traffic clears on the other route.    After all efforts to get her to the hospital, we sent the eldest daughter ahead to inform those at the emergency unit of what was coming thier way, arriving at d emergency/casualty unit we were met by, no doctors, no nurses, no stretcher, not even any one to help lift her out the car, after a few minutes of waiting, we carried her out of the car and dey instructed we lay her down on d sits where patients wait to be attended to, then a nonchalant doctor steps out and after checking pronounces her dead, God rest her soul. As if that wasn't enough she was just lying there while the nurses at the reception looked away as if nothing had happend they were tlking politics not bothered about the corpse js lying peacefully in front of them.....Ive never seen people so indiscplined and unprofessional about their duties, and they say they are supposed to save lives....Then I ask myslf what is the worth of a Nigerian Life. That death means nothing even to those in a hospital, No remorse or sad feeling towards losing a life. "Doctors should know it's not alwys about money" else they don't knw what dey signed up for... Then What single thing does one benefit from being a Nigerian?   Rest In Peace Ma, may God forgive all ur short comings... God bless the dead.

Unknown said...

That is a liar from the pit of hell,as a professional nurse,i know that a caeserian section patient cannot on her own discovered that a pad was left inside of her after 2days of surgery and pad is not used to operate. My people are so ignorant but will jump on the bandwagon like they know so much. Spewing absolute trash with such unrivalled confidence!!!
In no way will the woman have been aware that a swab was left in her abdomen ("tummy') without having had another abdominal surgery or an imaging investigation done.
In this particular case, at most, a swab may have been used to clean the vagina after the completion of surgery and left there by mistake (in the vagina like a tampon; and this should not happen ideally) or a pad was put over the vagina to absorb the normal lochia (post delivery blood).
Why go into the hospital screaming like a raving banshee to get her point across? The problem with us in Nigeria is that we think we have to scream/shout/rave like a lunatic to make others fear us as we try to get our point or anger across!!
I do not blame the doctor for chasing them out. They can bring back their grouse in a civilised manner and be heard appropriately!

Anonymous - that referred to sister's tongue sticking out after a antipsychotic drug was given.
That is a known side effect of antipsychotics. Look up acute dystonic reaction and extrapyramidal effects!
And, the main treatment is to withhold the culprit drug. Rarely a fatal side effect, so she never would have died anyway!

Anonymous said...

Mo - sorry about your unfortunate infection but it was never the CATGUT! True that suture is now out of fashion as technology as moved on with newer and better tensile strength sutures. You would have had the infection and wound breakdown even if monocryl/prolene/Vicryl etc was used. Bigger and more significant factors at play (sterility of instruments/surgeon(s), your immunity, bacteria YOU may already carry on your own body, obesity etc) with keeping a wound infection free than the type of suture used.

Anonymous 1246pm - Sorry about your friend's mum!
If it was a private hospital you took her to in the first instance, the hospital would not want to add to their mortality statistics when they can see she is almost at the point of death. Any intervention at that point in time may not have altered the outcome. And the way Nigeria works (as you can see on this particular thread), the hospital's name is dragged in mud despite their best efforts. Hence, the request to take her to a government hospital.
We are our own worst enemy!
