'Igbo will vote Igbo, Yoruba will vote Yoruba' - Orji Uzor Kalu states

"In 2015, what will happen is that the Igbo will vote for the Igbo, Yoruba for Yoruba and Hausa vote for Hausa. Then, we will all come to Abuja to discuss and determine who should be Nigerian President… Anybody who thinks that there is going to be a straight ballot thing to produce the President in 2015 is only fooling himself." - Former Abia State Governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu said this at the Professor David Ijalaiye annual lecture series which took place yesterday at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.

What do you guys think of this statement? Nigerians are not that shallow and tribalistic, are we? We will vote because someone is from our tribe and not because we believe in that person? C'mon! Please share your thoughts...

People will vote for Buhari because he can't speak good English; people will vote for Jonathan because Abuja is about allocations; people will vote for Orji Kalu because he emptied Abia treasury and made every UNBORN child in Abia State a debtor; people will vote for Fashola because he is a visionary who not only talk, the talk, but walk, the walk.

Kalu is just trying to launch himself back to relevance.
Yorubas don't vote Yorubas, they vote for candidates they believe can handle the office. That is the edge the Yorubas have, can't speak about Ibos but I think they are too divided to present a common front and form an alliance with the Yorubas. The North will always capitalize on this.

Yes most Nigerians re tribalistic, but doesn't really apply to politics. Politics has bn about rigging and bribery. Nigerians have suffered enough, come 2015 people will vote for who is capable to move us foward, or who can bribe the voters well. Hopefully its more of the latter. All we pray for is worthy candidates like Fashola for instance. Whoever has rigging in mind wil sure have a lot to contend with.

The future if they hold steady and not get overtly corrupted belong to Okorocha..Fashola..Ribadu(still good despite flaws)..Pat Utomi(if he can relate to his constituency)..Donald Duke..think all ethnic groups would support this lot!!

Hmmmmm.....sumone said what he's saying (orji kalu) is true i.e. "that whether we like it or not Nigerian's are tribalistic....blah blah...someone finds a way of turning it into ethnic fighting"...well thats ur opinion and u can'b be held against it. If i understand that statement very well that means we shud condone mediocrity and that "mentality" of tribalism shud continue abi? ansa nau......it shud continue abi? Well my dear this is the 21st century and counting, sry but,WE have moved on in naija, yeah a handful are still living in the 18th or 19th century that's why according to this statement: ("Whether we like it or not, what he's saying is true. Naija pple are tribalistic.

Don't we see it here on this blog? Every discussion someone finds a way of turning into ethnic fighting") in my own view this suggests continuity of insanity abi?....well as a rounder up, i guess since that's the status quo (tribalism) we shud also encourage: cannibalism, the killing of twins, rape, polygamy, maternal mortality, discrimination and abuse of women,Igbo presidency abi na yoruba or hausa, how about presidency from the other tribes too and a host of other anti-social vices..ehn? Please lets use this social medium to propagate positive comments that will move OUR country forward and not one's that'll plunge us further into ANARCHY. I understand ppl have different ORIENTATIONS but most of us have a common denominator which is HARDSHIP IN NIGERIA, and since thats the case it only means one thing: we need a president irrespective of tribe that'll transform this country and rule without fear or favour, shikena! God bless us,God bless Nigeria. I believe we can do it.

CHANGE BEGINS WITH US.

Let me tell you igbos the truth about biafra war. To y'all that was a war, to people who really know the truth, there was no war. The only reason why awolowo and people of the south south, did not partake in that war was very logical and frankly I don't blame them. That's why u igbos think yorubas betray people a lot. Well the yoruba elders told awolowo to back out because at that time the capital of Nigeria was lagos, lagos was a strong economy, if the yorubas joined that war, Nigeria would have started their massacre from the south west and before it gets to the south east the war might have ended. The way the igbos have not been able to recover from that war, it would have been the yorubas instead. I urge u people to buy yakubu gowons book on the biafra war so u can understand how long the government have been playing us. In south south, the major economy there was in porthacourt. In actual fact there was no way any ethnic group would have won that war against Nigeria cus as america was supporting the ethnic group, britain was shipping in arms for Nigeria and Nigeria had more arms and ammunitions. The major thing I want to bring out is the "so called war " itself. Gowon said when the war started they had planned that the war might just last a month or at most 3 months. He said benjamin adekunle and the other soldiers were feeding fat on that war because they used that opportunity to syphone so much money saying they were fighting a war. He prolonged the war cus he was selling arms and ammunitions secretly to biafran soldiers as well as food. Infact gowon said many biafran soldiers family were never hungry. Cus they were buying food from Nigeria. The people that suffered are the ordinary igbo people. Gowon said he travelled out and came back and he almost forgot that there was a war. Because he thought the war should have ended. He found out how some people were feeding fat untop this war, he later brought in obasanjo who ended the war. Before he ended it nko? He sef stole and stole and stole. Many senior citizens of nigeria became rich through this war. This story is according to yakubu gowons book. My take is only Ojukwu, Awolowo, obasanjo and Gowon and Adekunle know what went down.........

Linda, sometimes when I read the comments in your blog I found it as collage comments because most of the people that drops their comment seems to be only interested in hip pop stories. Most of them don’t know history when it comes to Nigerian problems.

I am a Nigerian and I have travelled far and wild and have seen things regarding tribal sentiments and preferences. Orji is right about his comment. Let the Igbo vote for his brother and let the Yoruba do the same and let the Hausa follow up the same way. The problem of Nigeria is religion and it is clear that we all know about it. It has divided our nation and it will soon divide our army if care is not taking and once this happens, Nigeria will be divided by force. We respect men by their initiatives and quality, not by family background and or wealthy background. Orji is a man indeed, his family’s name was not among the Nigerian elite family circle, but he came and made some achievements that brought respect to our nation Nigeria. I am a young Nigerian and if you ask me till tomorrow who is my choice for the leadership of Nigeria, I will pick Orji Kalu. He is a grass root man and also he is conversant with the 20th century ways of moving forward. Orji brought African Champions cup for us 2 times as a Governor of Abia State, he is the only true son of the Igbo community to create a political party that won 2 states in the history. You cannot buy Orji with money, but you can buy him with positive initiatives.

We are talking about someone who will work and eat a little, not someone who will eat all and not work. This is the problem with our polities. We need somebody who will work and bring results of respect to our nation. We need a 20th century initiatives that will bring our country to the top where the U.S and other countries are for today. Nigeria as a country must accept God Almighty as unity before we can move forward. Upon all the deeds and laws in the U.S, they show all nations that they love God, in their currency you will see that it is written in bold letters IN GOD WE TRUST. That is why dollar as currency dominates all other currencies in the world. Let us stamp that on our NAIRA and you will see what happens.

Regarding Abia State, The Ngwa people did not allow Orji to exhibit his gifted initiatives just because they knew him and his family from childhood as a grassroot people who has no profile in the Nigerian elite circle. Today Orji has made a name for his generation to come. We need people like this to take up this country because they know what the people needs. There was a time in the banking industry Orji emerges as the youngest bank chairman at the age of 27. Almost 90% of Nigerians are corrupt, but we must not let that to eat up our entire system, we have to use our brain to maintain the future of NIAJA so that we can look like other civilized nations.

We as a people must learn how to exhalt merit instead of mediocrity. Nigerians must rise above ethnic sentiments if we have to move foward. This can only be achieved through education. education of the mind. not necessarily going thru the four walls of a class but to know that anyone who aspires to lead us need not be looked at first from where he or she hails from. else we will all continue in this unending circle of mis rule because we have not found our leaders yet.

Well what the shallowest of them all doesn't know is that Yorubas, Igbos, and the other 200+ tribes voted for GEJ, albiet stupidly and not as much as was reported.

Things have changed, the media channels make it easier for leaders to transcend the tribal barriers and preach their gospel. Mr Kalu should get with the times and use the social media to allow spread his gospel, while compelling our leaders to improve on transportation, so that we can truly integrate as a nation.

Nigeria is slowly integrating, however the catalyst to such integration is a various super fast transportation channels between all the nooks and crannies of the country and a strong internal economy.
