Igbos vote based on their stomach, they suffer from incurable money mindedness- Wole Soyinka

Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka has described the Igbos as people who can be predicted when it comes to voting. According to him, the Igbos vote based on their stomach and have an incurable money mindedness. Prof. Soyinka said this while delivering a lecture titled 'Predicting Nigeria, Electoral Ironies’ at Harvard University Hutchins Centre for African and African American Research", in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
"Igbos remained unrepentant and resolute towards their strategic objective of secession at worst; or a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction at best,” he said at the lecture which held on April 29.
"The climax of MASSOB’s war against the Nigerian state was the call for sit-ins and civil disobedience that shut down markets and public services, as Igbos stayed at home in a symbolic gesture to assert Biafran independence. The call was honoured by governors in the two principal Ibo states, though without fanfare. The Igbos are probably the only group of Nigerians that you can predict with great accuracy whom they will vote for in an election, because they tend to put their votes where their stomachs take them; suffering as it were, from incurable money-mindedness, as they would stop at nothing in their quest for personal financial gain. Muhammadu Buhari was the better of the two evils as the incumbent president Goodluck Jonathan had been an unmitigated disaster and failure. It was a painful decision to tell people to vote Buhari, but the country needed a new beginning. I was more against Jonathan, than I was pro-Buhari. “Nothing is more unworthy of leadership than to degrade a system by which one attains fulfillment, and this is what the nation witnessed time and time again under Jonathan, who was increasingly becoming intolerant of opposition in an escalating streak of impunity and authoritarian madness, which was most blatant and unconscionable. The ‘militricians’ – soldiers turned politicians in power – aren’t looking for excellence; their civilian cohorts are worse. Short cuts and how to circumvent the system for the profit of a few are the norm of governance. Those who do honest work are derided as lacking the skill to fit it. Ironically, things haven’t quite changed a bit after 16 years of democracy in the country.” he said

Thank you very much for this comment. Let the fools who think they know it all continue to speak rubbish. What gives that idiot the right to talk about the igbos? What does he know about us? Why is he not talking about his own tribe or is Yoruba tribe now perfect? Even the bible says u should remove the log in your eyes first before removing the spec in another person's eye. All your stupid hates on the igbos will only amount to moving us to greater heights.

Seems many has written most of my thinking on the subject and it's author, the respect Soyinka. Permit me to add that stomach infrastructure is a government policy only at Ekiti state in the western region and no where in Igbo land. It seems Prof Soyinka and perhaps most yoruba's are desperate to ridicule the Igbo people. This assertion is uncalled for and an opinion of a biased mind. I hope literal giants of Igbo extraction will find time to reply Soyinka appriopriately.

That's actually how it would sound with an igbo accent.

So voting for who you want to vote for is now greed for money? You are obviously dumb! Igbos voted for who they wanted to vote for, same way Hausas and yorubas voted. so because the igbos didn't vote for Buhari it means they were bribed? Lol. Whatever happened to democracy. You guys should have told Jega not to conduct election. The mandate should have just been passed to Buhari. Stupid fellows.

Wole is right. A lot of Igbos are greedy and careless. Look at their own states! They don't even care about their image as long as they can get money. They're willing to do every and anything without a conscience. Mother's know their sons are drug peddlers and they encourage it. Father's join in. 419 is the staple diet and when that doesn't work, they deceive their friends. Biafra my foot! Igbos need to accept they need change! How can people even be talking about Biafra? It was defeated and the leader abandoned his people to face the people they betrayed. If it was anywhere else, Ojukwu would've been stoned, but for a people proud of their misery, it's not surprising they still shout Biafra. Thank you, Wole for speaking the blatant truth. Igbos should've been given Biafra minus Modern day Delta. We would have peace and less ingrates among us.

Lol. When an old man has decided to dance naked in the market square no body needs to tell you that he has gone mad! It's your entire tribe and generation that is mannerless. The amadioha you are calling will strike you and your entire generation. No you know he is an old man and shouldn't be insulted. When you were insulting GEJ like he is your classmate you didn't know that what goes around comes around. The seed you guys have sown is growing fast and you must all reap that which you have sown.

The 3 things dat shud be an asset 2 Nigeria are constantly working against her- Diversity, Population and (western) Education. If we assume dat the Prof's depositions are accurate(am not saying dat dey are) is NOW da best time 2 reveal. Or US, da best place. Academics-history as shown know ONLY how 2 criticise. Nigerians by nature are tribalist(Ibo academics included-Achebe made some tribalistic contributions of his own in his final book)-dis in itself shudnt be the problem but wat spews 4rm it. 1 wud expect an aged Laurette 2 ave known and acted better/wiser. Dis is anoda fall from grace 4 da Prof(in my book dere are many). My sincere apologies 2 my Ibo bro+sisters 4 da wave of insults/hate/distrust but isn't all dese an indication 4 U 2 get shit(politics+economy) 2geda?!

READING ALL THESE COMMENTS ITS OBVIOUS THAT THE IGBO MAN IS PLAGUED BY A SELF DESTRUCTIVE SPIRAL PATTERN!!!!
INSTEAD OF TAKING OUT WHAT MATTERS FROM SOYINKA'S COMMENTS AND USING YOUR GREY MATTER, INSTEAD YOU TALK ABOUT TRIBALISM AND RAIN ABUSES ON THE MAN.
PLEASE TELL ME, WHAT HAVE YOUR GOVERNORS, LEGISLATORS AND SENATORS BEEN DOING WITH ALL THE MONEY THEY GET? WE IGBOS ARE THE CAUSE OF OUR OWN PROBLEMS. THIS IS THE GOSPEL TRUTH. WE CAN'T EVEN STAND BEHIND ONE MAN TO PRESENT AS A PRESIDENT. AN IGBO WILL ONLY RULE THIS COUNTRY WHEN OTHER TRIBES VOTE FOR AN IGBO NOT THE IGBO PEOPLE THEMSELVES.
GO TO THE EAST AND SEE THAT STATE IN WHICH THE PLACE IS. YOU CAN'T ACCOST YOUR GOVERNORS OR LEADERS BUT ARE QUICK TO CONDEMN OTHERS. IGBOS YOU NEED TO WAKE UP AND USE YOUR BRAINS. I AM AN IGBO PERSON BUT ASHAMED OF HOW LOW WE HAVE STOOPED FOR A MUSSEL OF BREAD. FUCK UPS.

I really think everyone should remain calm and consider this statement as his own opinion...(which by the way he is entitled to)...but then which the right to vote, comes the right to vote for what ever reason a person chooses to vote his preferred candidate, as well as the right not to vote at all ...

When people say Igbos love money, I just laugh at their stupidity. Who doesn't love money? Igbo people "WORK HARD"! For their money because in the end my people, that's what they have. Hausa and Yoruba people are all up in the government. Igbos are just doing "boy-boy" for them in politics. The Hausas and Yorubas steer the course of this nation the way they want, what do they expect the Igbos to do???we've got to hustle. The average Yoruba man loves money much more than any human being but is too LAZY to work for it. Truth be told, Igbos work for their money and that's why they are in all parts of the world working relentlessly. I laugh in swahili at those who say Igbos are the problems we have in this country. How's that so please?are we your presidents?even the "close to igbo" man that is president, they've rigged him out. And they say Igbos are the problems. They should keep trying to trample on Igbo people, they won't succeed because their heads are too high

Prof. Apart from this title, I have checked very well to know what gave you a nobel peace price and it is nothing but luck. Your achievement in literature is not extraordinary. You are not a march to Achebe, He is very far ahead in your field(Is because his work lives on). For the grace you enjoy, do yourself a favour and talk carefully afterall you lost your credibility a long time ago when you started feeding from corrupt politicians. Your problem is even more of stomach dementia than objectivity. People have the right to support who they like. It's about Nigeria and democracy and not tribe. Grow up.

Prof I was thought in Primary school about characteristics of living things. In the University I was thought about ingredients or elements of crime. When I relate these two basic knowledge I conclude that tribes, races have elements peculiar to them. For example, among the qualities of Yurobas are tribalism, nepotism, deception, sycophancy, cowardice, stupidity and avariciousness.

Can Prof explain clearly the  link between voting for  Mr Jonathan and the stomach of Igbos?  Can he also clarify  how their preference for the outgoing president  buttresses his so called incurable money mindedness?
I have tried to see how votes cast for Jonathan in the 2015 election would‎  have translated into money but I am yet to construe the link. How much money did the Igbos and other Nigerians, mainly from the SE,SW, SS and NC make from voting massively for this same PDP candidate in 2011?
The major racket in the country today is around oil blocks and fuel subsidy where a few Nigerians benefit massively from this common resource to the detriment of the rest of us. But is this few made up of solely Igbos? How many Igbos even  own or control oil blocks in the country? Prof should please help me clarify the link.

Talking about voting for the stomach, of what ethnic extraction is the self-acclaimed apostle of stomach infrastructure? Our brothers in Ekiti voted last year to the surprise of all, in favour of this cause. Please what is the population of Igbo voters in Ekiti? Is prof also saying that the votes Ayo Fayose got in Ekiti came from the Igbo Population there? If it were true that Igbos could muster that volume of votes in a " foreign "‎ land, then their dream of producing the coutry' s president would have been achieved a long time ago.

Talking about predictability, I insist that one does not need the service of Gallop or any other pooling agency to predict the direction each state or tribe in Nigeria will vote. Before the election ,one could rightly predict that the core North -NE,NW, would vote massively for Buhari ,for many reasons, other than peformance. One could also see that SW would support the APC massively due to their near 100% adoption of the APC as their own party and the emergence of Prof Osinbajo as the Vice Presidential candidate of the APC. I tell you, these two factor accounted for more that 90% of the votes cast for APC in Youruba Land. Yet nobody has called for their heads for being so easily predictable.  ‎
The remaining 10% voted for Buhari because Jonathan had failed. Likewise in other tribes where a few percentage including my humble self voted because we were tired of Jonathan ' s seemingly clueless rule.
‎I think it is time we stopped calling a particular section of  of the country a bad name and blaming  them for any bad thing     that happens in the polity.
I can say with certainty that if there is a man in the country who doesn't need the government to for his survival that person  ‎ Igbo.
On the Biafra ‎ issue, I think the name Biafra is often heard among non-Igbos  than it is heard among Igbos. They keep mentioning it where most of the people of the old eastern nigeria have moved on with their lives in various parts of Nigeria....
I welcome your criticism.

Why do people like deceit more than the truth? The facts on ground are:

1. Within 8 years of Igbo Senate Presidency, they had 5 Senate Presidents because of greed. North Central held same position for 8 years without any problem. Yoruba held Speakership without any rancour.

2. Igbo chose to vote against Ojukwu despite shouting his name after his demise. He contested twice and lost woefully in the East twice just because money was available under PDP.

3. Igbo follows a principle of AGIP- Any Government In Power and that is their guiding light. They are the only region that will give 99% votes to a party or person because of money.

Prof Wole Soyinka was correct 100%

Yorubas are tribalist. I could remember when Oba of Lagos made that statement this old man never said anything and now he opened his loud mouth to insult the anointed people of this nation. What a FOOL he is.
WELL if any tribe do not like money, God pls continue to bless all IGBOS alone in Jesus name Amen.

Hey I don't know you but you have spoken so intelligently. Well, I use to respect the old fool until now. When Oba of Lagos was making he's stupid I felt it's coming from the mouth of an illiterate but never thought an educated fool in the person of Soyinka could make sure idiotic statement. We might be the minority in the 3 major enthic group in Nigeria but I am happy and proudly Igbo. We don't depend on federal allocation or state gov budget to earn a living we'all are born hustlers we don't care about power because we are contented with the little our individual businesses earns us. It's a shame that the Hausas and Yorubas don't regard US yet we he'll develop their cities building houses and promoting their state revenues. Now Buhari is becoming their fav candidate. If Buhari like mey him turn Nigeria into Dubai I still hate and will never love him, period!!!!

Why do we all preach and have no love? Tribalism everywhere. Nigeria my country may God deliver your inhabitants. You cannot love a human being but you claim to love God??? Hypocrites!

Unfortunately, this man has insulted himself. Who can fault the late Achebe and what he stood for. I am an Ibo man and can say with confidence I have never voted because of money. I have the right to vote whoever I like. Since the conspiracy of 1966 to eliminate the ibo man from the mainstream of Nigerian politic what has become of the entity Nigeria. Soyinke tell me one single thing GMB did in the south east as president and PTF chairman. I was personnally skeptical about his anticedents and everyother person will behave alike. Leave Ibo people alone. I least expected this statement from you if its throughly from you and the respect you get from a number of us cannot be regained. You need to earn it once more.

so money does not matter to the Yoruba man, eh? nonsense. I am not Igbo, but I know that many Igbos in Lagos voted for APC. and this is what they get in return; insults. So allthe local government chairmen in Lagos and its environs where elected on merit, on their charisma. that is a big lie. Yorubas love money more than the Igbos, they are just lazy bunch if people who suffer from inferior complexity and low self-esteem. tribalist to the core, and Wole Soyinka has shown that he is not an exception. Yorubas live in the Ease too, in Onitsha, Aba and Port, but the Igbos are too busy thinking of how to feed themselves than to cast aspersions on a persons character. people from this weird tribe need to change.

Martin Okoye and Ebonybright, you guys are missing the point and that adds to our problem.
We might have a chance when we start telling ourselves the truth. Look at most Igbo States., I remember after my wedding in 2005 visiting Abia state and seeing a corpse on the street of Aba and people were walking by like its the most normal thing ever, yet the same governor got voted into office again. Go to Aba its still the same, nothing changed, yet some few individuals are getting rich everyday off citizens. Not that any where in Nigeria is any better, but we vote for leaders that are proven thieves becos he gave some idiot a few thousand or million Naira. Igbo's are the most industrious by far in Nigeria but becos a few of us will do anything for that money we stand behind those who never do anything for the collective good of Igbo people. Its the same greed that breed the divisiveness within us. Everyone wants the money in their house (but then again it might be a Nigerian disease).
This is not an offense, a shade or a support for other tribes, no this is about our tribe, this is about my child who is growing up with the knowledge of where she's from and I pray one day she'll want to move back home. I want her to have a place she can be proud to call home, and that's not just living in a mansion while your neighbours drink garri in their zinc huts.
Dissociate yourself from a thief and you won't be mistaken to be a thief. Not all Igbo are like this but most of them are too busy covering our dirty laundry, we don't realize we're harboring criminals. If you don't cut out infected parts, it will fester!
Ndi okporo nwanne bu ndi ga akpo gi nwanne!
Martin, obihi kwa ni iko not. You don't win am argument/discussion by throwing insults. My opinions are mine feel free to express yours maturely without unnecessary insults.
Thank you

Did I hear some people say "the man has spoken" as if to say God Has spoken. Just because a learned, not educated, bigot exposed himself. BTW scientific polls have shown that most Americans vote on their pocket book issues (money). Only few vote on social issues such as abortion or gay right. Go to any country that is democratic, voting pattern can easily be determined, that's how politicians package their msg. I rather deal with someone who I know where he stands and I can trust than someone who is slippery, a flip flopper and a chameleon. I thought we were all for restructuring Nigeria. What happened?

I wonder why almost every other tribe in Nigeria hates the IBO people! What have we done wrong? The richest man in Nigeria isn't an IBO man, yet they say we too like money. Abeg which person no like money? All these politicians that are so corrupt and have soiled their hands with very dirty and unimaginable stuffs just to acquire so much money that will get to even their 10th generation, how many of them are IBOs? Obasanjo, Tinubu, Fashola, Atiku, Abaccha, IBB, etc are not IBO men, yet each of these men have stolen much money than all the IBO tribe put together can ever steal! The IBOs are special, it's not our fault that God loves us so much that He prospers every little thing we do to survive. So all them IBO haters like the FOOLISH oba, IRRESPONSIBLE Soyinka and all the other STUPID people should learn to deal with it or go hug a transformer. Mtcheeeeewwww

Wole Soyinka has distanced himself from such stupid and uneducated statement and I belive him for I feel he is too educated for such silliness. The statement is foolish and unguared and such cannot come from any cerebral and mature yoruba. I think we igbos have to be very careful how we take and accept certain allegations, so easily for most of the stupid statements and lines very primtive and unintelligent tribal emissions dont come from cerebral and mature other tribes and definitely not of the yoruba variety. But from the badly and illi-informed other tribes . The statement is too awful and cant come from the calibre of Prof Wole Soyinka. There are very many ill-informed and poorly groomed and badly educated tribal yorubas and Huasa fulanis , as there are such too amongst the igbos .Its evident there are some igbos who belive tha all the lies being spread about the igbos and lacking in thinking skills they have no way of processing information , obeserving and doing analysis hence they only regurgitate all that has been thrown at them. Prof Wole Soyinka is a highly cerebral african and cant speak with such foolery and absence of intelligent articulation

John J Alozieuwa said...

I accept that Wole Soyinka could use those words Hower here is an answer for any who might be temtped to belive whoever is behind those words......................

...
The Nobel laureate Professor Wole
Let me digress. Is it not curious that for the past 16 years that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu had Lagos in his pocket ‘like so many nickels and diamonds’ and shares it with whomsoever he pleases Professor Soyinka who claims to be an apostle of good governance has never written about the corruption that stares him on the face in Lagos as he goes to his Abeokuta home? Is it not curious that despite the alleged monumental corruption of the regime of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in Rivers State, Soyinka is one of his staunchest defenders and in his defence has written many unprintable things about President Goodluck Jonathan and First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan? Of course Soyinka will never criticise the rots in Lagos and Port Harcourt and the like, because he knew where his bread is buttered.
I have to digress to remind us that Soyinka as a social critic is also a hypocrite who is always selective in his targets just as he choose the Igbo for denigration and attack in his Harvard lecture.
Let us interrogate the allegation that Igbos’ political decisions are influenced by money for which he claimed that Nigerians usually knew for certainty where the Igbo will vote because they follow ‘their stomach’. Does that mean that it was the Igbos that received all the billions of naira spent by the PDP and APC in the 2015 elections? That is by the way.
Another question to ask Soyinka is, how much did his brother Chief Olusegun Obasanjo pay to the Igbos to vote for him in 1999 when he left the prison with only N20,000 in his bank account as he (Obasanjo) claimed? Also how much did Umaru Musa Yar’Adua pay to Ndigbo for them to reject Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and General Muhammadu Buhari and vote for him in 2007 presidential election? If money could buy all the Igbo why was Tinubu panicky in Lagos before the governorship election in that state? He should have paid for their votes the same way he had used patronage to pocket the state? The APC would not have conscripted the Oba of Lagos to do their yeoman’s job of threatening the Igbos with extinction if they did not vote for APC candidate?
Talking about sectional politics, who plays it better than Soyinka’s people? In 1999 Soyinka’s people congregated around sectional Alliance for Democracy (AD) while the rest of Nigeria congregated around more nationalistic Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The voting pattern of his people then did not meet Soyinka’s criteria for qualification as sectional politics. It was a pragmatic decision by his people? Was it not sectional interest that made AD not to field a presidential candidate in 2003 and choose instead to vote for Obasanjo of the PDP when it became obvious like the case of Jonathan that the North that helped Obasanjo to power was determined to kick him out?
Besides, since 1999, the North East has never voted for the government at the centre preferring to vote for the opposition All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) but I have never heard Soyinka accusing that region of sectionalism. When the Igbos voted for Jonathan in 2011 why were they not accused of sectional politics then? Because Soyinka’s people also voted for him then, probably? For voting the same South-South presidential candidate of PDP in 2015 the Igbos of the South East are today considered sectional by the likes of Soyinka.
The Igbo were very passionate about Jonathan’s presidency and many of them voted for Jonathan because in their estimation Jonathan performed better than all the past presidents (military and civilians) including Obasanjo and therefore deserves a second term. They cannot apologise to Soyinka or any other hater for the choice they made. It is the same way that the people of North East, North West owe no apology to any one for rejecting Jonathan in 2011 and 2015 presidential elections.

Wole said that Igbos voted based on their stomach and that they suffer from incurable money mindedness. First, no one will claim not to like money. Even if you don't like it, at least u need it to feed(stomach he is talking about), shelter, cloth and do other things. Second, the yoruba's voted Buhari not because they all like him or his proposed change rather because they got Osibanjo (GMB's running mate) in Aso Rock. If Jonathan had used Osibanjo as running mate i know the yoruba's would have voted J
Jonathan.
