Igbos vote based on their stomach, they suffer from incurable money mindedness- Wole Soyinka

Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka has described the Igbos as people who can be predicted when it comes to voting. According to him, the Igbos vote based on their stomach and have an incurable money mindedness. Prof. Soyinka said this while delivering a lecture titled 'Predicting Nigeria, Electoral Ironies’ at Harvard University Hutchins Centre for African and African American Research", in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
"Igbos remained unrepentant and resolute towards their strategic objective of secession at worst; or a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction at best,” he said at the lecture which held on April 29.
"The climax of MASSOB’s war against the Nigerian state was the call for sit-ins and civil disobedience that shut down markets and public services, as Igbos stayed at home in a symbolic gesture to assert Biafran independence. The call was honoured by governors in the two principal Ibo states, though without fanfare. The Igbos are probably the only group of Nigerians that you can predict with great accuracy whom they will vote for in an election, because they tend to put their votes where their stomachs take them; suffering as it were, from incurable money-mindedness, as they would stop at nothing in their quest for personal financial gain. Muhammadu Buhari was the better of the two evils as the incumbent president Goodluck Jonathan had been an unmitigated disaster and failure. It was a painful decision to tell people to vote Buhari, but the country needed a new beginning. I was more against Jonathan, than I was pro-Buhari. “Nothing is more unworthy of leadership than to degrade a system by which one attains fulfillment, and this is what the nation witnessed time and time again under Jonathan, who was increasingly becoming intolerant of opposition in an escalating streak of impunity and authoritarian madness, which was most blatant and unconscionable. The ‘militricians’ – soldiers turned politicians in power – aren’t looking for excellence; their civilian cohorts are worse. Short cuts and how to circumvent the system for the profit of a few are the norm of governance. Those who do honest work are derided as lacking the skill to fit it. Ironically, things haven’t quite changed a bit after 16 years of democracy in the country.” he said

I'm inclined to agree and disagree. I'm igbo as well and I think the average Igbo man believes money solves every problem. It's in our nature and its part of who we are. That being said, greed isn't restricted to an ethnic group. There is corruption in every single state in Nigeria and corruption is caused by greed.
In regards to the election, he and I are on the same page. Jonathan was an epic failure! He had 6yrs to make a difference. I was sympathetic towards him because I felt Boko Haram never really gave him a chance, but he was a president for crying out loud! He didn't have adequate resources at his disposal to end the insurgency but his lackadaisical attitude towards the whole issue had us at wits end. I was even more pissed off when he announced his candidacy! But I didn't think Buhari was a better option either. I was of the opinion that we needed someone younger, intelligent, with modern views and ideas on how to tackle issues of unemployment, power supply, education, security and all the problems plaguing us. Most people voted for Buhari because they wanted someone different as is their right. It wasn't about his politics or views or promises. They just wanted Jonathan out. I'm glad he's leaving anyway, I for one am dying to see what Buhari has to offer and I hope he's able to handle all the problems facing Nigeria.

Igbos voted for their stomach and wole soyinka and his tribal men voted for their anus,According to wole Igbos like money more than him and his yoruba people how many charity homes has for the less priviledged people he cares for in this his useless Nigeria, foolish old man after saying all sorts of rubbish against Buhari you have the gut to insult Igbos for voting their choice, then how can he equate 17 states of the north against 4 states from the east.

Why must evry tribe in nigeria afraid of igbo, northwest voted buhari no one talk, northeast vote buhari no one talk, southsouth voted Jonathan no one talk, south east voted Jonathan and evry body talking must other tribe dictate to igbo.

Good question. In America, Democrats always vote for their candidate and so do Republicans. No one has the right to question anyone's political leanings. How many Northerners voted Jonathan? The entire election shows how divided we are as a people, but the fact remains everyone has a right to vote whomever he / she wants !

The day Igbos start acknowledging and admitting truth irrespective of how bitter it is. Things will start to get a lot better for them.

Now i can see that these white hairs are signs of stupidity not knowledge, old fool!!!

I hate it when i keep hearing people( Yorubas and Hausas) attacking the Igbos out of jealousy. If a man like Wole Soyinka (as stupid as he is) can join the rank of people who are against us and say some stupid untrue things about us, then i have to take it personal... Soyinka is such a scumbag scum

Anonymous said...

ooouch! Prof has blundered. How can he generalize? 12m people voted for Jonathan, are they all igbos? Is Nigeria not a democracy? Don't we have a right to vote for any candidate? I am sure the Prof was caught at a bad time. As Richard Akinjide, once said, Prof Soyinka should leave politics for politicians and concentrate on literature. Still a great Nigerian though. For people who expose their ignorance by saying all Igbo people love is money, what of other tribes? Don't they love money? Again it is only politics that divide us. Meanwhile Linda u too sweet.

I'm Hausa and I find this highly offensive to the Igbos. They didn't vote GMB and they are automatically side lined. I mean for crying out loud this is democracy. If the Igbos are predictable what about the Hausas why didn't any Northern state vote GEJ if they weren't being sentimental. It amazes me when a man starts to castigate a whole tribe just because they didn't vote for who you wanted. Its democracy!!! Some people will even vote Satan if he contests thats the whole point of DEMOCRACY!!! I really didn't expect this from you. Its comments like this that are inciting... Smh.. May Allah forgive you

PS. Over look any typos 😀

Some of you here can insult him all you want, but deep down in your heart, you know the man is RIGHT! Even after the presidential election in which Buhari won, most Igbos were still making noise up and down, casting aspersion on Buhari until they realize that no Igbo will win a senate seat and then all of them starting thinking of the errors of their decision, which CLEARLY influenced the way they voted for Rochas Okorocha because that is the only hope they now have to gain any sympathy. Wole Soyinka is right. The truth is bitter, but it must be told.

We wil just sit down and be watching at dis drama called Nigerian politics. Igbos wil hav d last laff. And wen Yorubas wil realise it, it wil be tooo late.

This is really very insulting coming from wole Soyinka to a whole race of eople. Did he not know that people where even bribed to vote a particular way in other areas, why pick on the igbos? I voted jonathan and I have no regrets doing that. If the elections hold tmrow again, I will still vote jonathan again. Soyinka is just an old anuofia, otolo and big hypocrite, rubbish

Nna eh....wts vexing me isn't even that he's only calling out ibos , yea we were predictable but Hausas nko? GEJ just abandoned other tribes and settled on them, apart from that bokoharam issue, he mainly worked in the north improving their agriculture, education and all dat, yet they voted in millions for their own brother. I dnt blame them, dats their choice, same way we av our choice too....so on what basis are we voti g with our stomachs? Cudnt he talk about their case too abi dey werent biased with their votings? I always get overwhelmed with pity when I see my people shout one Nigeria when there is actually nothing like that. It's quite unfortunate that a supposedly educated man, a noble price laureate for that matter who is supposed to be a Nigerian proved me right by talking down on a Nigerian Tribe outside Nigeria. (in a strange land). It's a shame. If I may ask, who doesn't love money? So it's not our fault that we know how to get it, make it and manage our finances. Those were the
reasons why God created money so you shouldn't jealous us. Let me officially say that I love money and I love those who knows how to make the money legally and not those who pretend to hate it but uses every little opportunity they get to steal and squander it just like your people. As for the election , please people have the right to make their choices and that is what freedom is all about, it is their constitutional right. Thanks

I truly don't care about the feelings or opinions of any other Nigerian concerning the father of all cultism activities in the Nigerian Universities of today.
I'm of the opinion that Prof. Wole Soyinka is a bigot and a shame to the prestigious Noble Award he carries around town.
A master of divisible ethics, Prof has truly made it clear that he stands for ethnic separations amongst Nigerians than ever before.
I have no apologies to tender, rather I'd pray to have him face his word-crimes sooner than later.
You can.talk about my people with disrespect, it's not your fault, father I blame the Igbos for that, but when.you start to bring up a few topics like that of the Biafran war my fathers and there fathers fought with bravery and gallantly, then you deserve a smack on the face.
Shit will always remain shit, no matter how well it's packaged.

So Hausa/Fulani that voted overwhelmingly for Buhari was not predictable? You gotta be kidding me! For the Igbos, it was more of a rejection of APC/Buhari. That is our CHOICE, so respect it or STFU with this incessant whining about Igbo this, igbo that. Apart from that sell out Okorocha (Senate Presidency my arse), WE ARE NOT COMPLAINING.

Get on with the task of project nigeria and STOP CRYING! And FYI, Efik, Urhobo, ijaw, Ibibio etc ARE NOT IGBO!!!!

I don't know why these people hate Igbos so thoroughly. So how and why did Yorubas, Hausas, South South minorities vote? Because they didn't vote for Buhari they should be called names? This is worrying coming from someone like Soyinka. I did not hear him condemn the Oba of Lagos when the Oba threatened to drown Igbos in the Lagos. If these people get the slightest chance they'll exterminate all Igbos off the earth. God forbid!

The Igbo problem: A very interesting topic. So it is no longer a Nigerian problem. It has now become an Igbo problem. Jonathan is Ijaw. But his mistakes are now ascribed to the Igbos. All South-south voted for him. The South East voted for the candidate who will best represent their interests of the two. Isn't that what democracy is about?
Well, lets watch and see how Nigeria will suddenly become a paradise within the next four years.

Were is your empirical evidence...with all due respect nkita riforu GI nsi...

This man is becoming as tribalistic as any other yoruba person. What was the reason the yorubas voted OBJ for the second term? Was it because he did well in his first term? When the Oba of Lagos was condemned by the world because of his treat on the Igbos, we didn't hear from the likes of Soyinka. I beg this man should take several seat back.

Your opinions are outdated and do not hold water in the runs of this day. In the USA,majority of their states are predictable in their votings. i live in Texas and it has always being a Republican state. If are predictable, what happened in the the election that jonathan was voted in by all and sundry? which means you also voted for your stomach then?. In like manner that you voted for GMB for your stomach this time. No roll models anymore though you have never being one before after introducing young men to Pirates fraternity in the univrsities, a cult that ruins so many lives. Infact, let me not waste my time here talking about your irrelevance.

I voted GEJ and wasn't paid...
So your talk is lost on you.
They say all this cos GEJ no swell votes like OBJ.
In Nigeria, personal interest supercedes national interest because national interest has never been fulfilled. There has been no sense of nationality from day one. Who do we trust?
How sure are we Buhari will do a thing of what he said?
We are an egalitarian people and can't be bought. Soyinka erred in judgement. After all these years, the igbo mind is still too complex for you to fathom. We igbos are even as simple as you stated, and not for the wrong reasons. We like freedom, free trade, predictable government policies. We know the government can't do a thing for us(yorubas n Hausas thrive more on govt infrastructure and expects more from the government), we igbos are wiser. We know most govts just lie and cheat the people. So many governments have cheated us, since independence. So, we just needed a man who, even if he doesn't work for us, will give us an enabling environment.
-GEJ led the quest for the dredging of the Niger, which will bring free trade to Onitsha and Agbor.
-GEJ improved Agriculture. So we can fend for ourselves.
-GEJ brought international airport to us(first time ever, after we have begged and begged for years)
-GEJ opened trade bureaus to help our young entrepreneurs. Now to borrow money is easier. Even they are the ones where you deposit a fixed capital and they keep giving you circulating capital monthly. You-Partner. I deposited 1million(to try them), and every month I'm paid 100 thousand. 95k after tax.
*GEJ didn't elevate any igbo brother. Not that we care for anyone though. We don't have Kings and bow to no one, including GEJ and not even to Buhari will we be subservient.
*the best thing GEJ did for us was to allow free trade and for the forces of economics to determine the market. Non-govt interference. The govt sits a mere umpire and not bans here and there, duties here and there, monopolies here and there(the way Buhari is planning to do). In GEJ's time, the perceived complacency helped trade to thrive. We moved from a mixed economy(whatever this means) to a capitalist country. Price was determined by demand and supply.
So, yes, you are right by 'stomach politics' as you stated but ironically, GEJ didn't campaign too much in the East nor share too many bags of rice to convince people. Non of my family tasted any 'fruits of election'. We voted against Buhari for his perceived tyranny which is well documented and though we have not been vindicated yet but time will tell, surely. Just don't come back here and give any speech against 'the better candidate', Mr Nobel laureate. Cos you seem to steer like the wind. One day you're saying 'damn Buhari', one day you're saying 'Sai Buhari'. Pick a cause and stick with it. We igbos are unwavering, as you have done well to notice, that is why we are predictable and trustworthy.

I notice you somehow omitted to comment on how the Hausas voted. Even from 1999, they voted Obj because of Atiku, left Falae hanging. voted Y'aradua massively. Voted Buhari in '11 despite his unknown party. Voted him now. Pray tell us, did he deliver an intellectual lecture to cattle rearers in the mosques or oh, was it cos of the name he bears, the tribe he belongs to or the his religion. Talk to me again about voting for people of your extraction. Or yoruba's would have readily voted Buhari if he wasn't in APC with Tinubu and Osibanjo?
The joke is infinitely lost on you. Why? Because you decided to make a national issue a sectional thing, like a simpleton you are not.
I have met you, Wole. I think you are brilliant but Sir, leave politics alone, after all these years, you still don't know the half of it. Using historical stories that don't correlate of sit-at-home drama in the past just to sell a dead point, we noticed sir. (laughs) you're still very smart, old fox. Hahhaha

I also guess the woman that planned with her entire family and inlaws to kidnap the Orukoya kids is an igbo woman. And her wanted husband, brothers inlaw, mother inlaw and all her family are also igbos.

Thank you sir!!! truth is bitter for these people called Igbos and they are impervious to reasons. They are tribes that are living as if they are under spell. Everywhere they are, they are loathed by their hosts. They are sheeps without Shepards they are troops without commanders. They regard anything that can bring money to them as business. Niger Deltans used kidnapping to draw the attention of the world to the environmental degradation that befalls them but Igbos had turned it to business in Nigeria. They need reorientation before they can start thinking like normal human beings and I pity the whole race as I forsee a situation whereby the entire tribes in Nigeria rise against them as they are turning everything dishonorable to business due to their alienable quest for money.

This man feels he has the liberty and monopoly of being stupid, well he can go on we support his take. Meanwhile if he had really done his home work he wld know that the igbos voting GEJ, strictly because of sentiments. Religious and ethnic sentiments. And point of correction they Yoruba's gulped the most money during the campaigns more than any region then the hausa's. GEJ all ready knew the igbos won't vote otherwise so he dint border. And Mr you should know better as an elder state man to stop attacking the igbos at any opportunity it's their right to vote for who so ever they want. The obas were given thousands of dollars which they accepted the had the option of refusal. Yet he dint come out to condemn their actions by saying they are money minded. Pls the Yoruba's should leave the igbos alone. Talking as if they are saints. Very trabalistic, cunning and very deceptive people. It is definitely not God of the Bible that will bless him. Igbos always vote out of loyalty to a person and to their conscience and not out of the stomach as he so arrogantly and disrespectfully states. And what is his headache anyway? His blood soaked Buhari and his Yoruba counterpart have won and did igbos complain to Soyinka? The darkness from the demon of tribalism that Yorubas and their Hausa co travelers want to cover Nigeria with will continue to be defeated by the light of the non tribalistic groups in Nigetia chiefly the igbos. Igbos will never vote Buhari if he returns 100 times because his hands are soaked in the blood of many igbos. Thankfully igbos are not like Yorubas who on the alter of the demon of tribalism sell their souls and even rewrite history in worship to that demon. It is far better to live with a conscience that to live with a soul-less demon of tribalism infested conscience that has plagued the Yorubas and continues to afflict them. Little wonder the middle name is traitors. Yorubas do Anything that worships that demon of tribalism. And God of heaven is watching and orchestrating His purpose for Nigeria. Thumping the chest after a battle is the mark of the ignorant like Soyinka who fail to realize that winning a battle is not winning the war. The future they say is pregnant. Let's await what it will birth.
