Photos: Catholic priest to contest for Governor of Cross River state

Roman Catholic Priest, Rev Fr Francis Agantem Eworo of the Ogoja Diocese in Cross Rivers state, has signified interest in running for governor of the state in the 2015 general election.

At a media parley held recently, Rev. Fr Eworo told newsmen that he intends to contest on the platform of PDP and if elected as Governor, would focus on youth development among others

Father Eworo who says he has been involved in the politics of the PDP since 1999, was ordained a priest in 1977 and has served in various parishes of the Catholic Church in Ogoja, Ikom, Uruan, Calabar, and Akwa Ibom State. Is it OK for a Catholic priest to want to run for election?

Naaa...

This isn't true or possible.

There must be something wrong with the info, the archdiocese, or the claim that he's a "catholic priest"

You can not serve God and Man at the same time. I don't see how that can be possible.

I don't think it's okay,it will take him away from his main job which is preaching the gospel,I hope the church doesn't support this.

We need men of good honour in our politics cos our normal leaders have failed. even pastors should join the race.

But on second thought our politics in Nigeria is too messy for a man of God to come in.

Soon they will hunt him down with a gun or set him up to fail or get him involved in corruption just like they did to Pastor Oritsejafor . so NO NO

Why not?.Is he not a human being. The late Rev.Fr Moses Adasu was governor of Benue state.

First to Comment....Yippeee

I think it is perfect for a real man of God to rule...In the Bible the Church played in vital role in running the State. In some cases the leader of the State was also a priest. In the book of Judges Deborah was Judge over Israel (at that time a judge could be likened to a King/Queen as he/she lead the state), she was also prophetess and a wife. This means she acted in triple capacity.

The reason why we are where we are today is because the Church has left politics/ruling in the hands of hoodlums/evil men.

It is now time time for the Church to take up leadership and set examples.

Please note that to bring about the change Nigeria needs we must beginning to step into positions of leadership. This change will never come if the good people of God (with vision and genuine passion to serve) sit back and watch the militants, Boko Bois and all sorts of evil men take power....saying that "politics is for the world"...says who??? This change we are all talking about, SO WHO WILL BRING THIS CHANGE IN NIGERIA... is it the militants or Boko Haram or those evil people with no vision or passion to serve the people of Nigeria????

Please lets rethink and begin to act... If you are a Priest ,and you have leadership qualities, and you have a passion for Nigeria, and you have the calling to serve your people please arise and take up your rightful position and change Nigeria for the best...Nothing should stop you...

There is nothing bad about it. It is better he participates and make a useful impact unless he will continue to pray for what he can change with his hands. If we say governance and politics are for the devil and we shy away from it in the name of politics is a dirty game, then Nigeria will continue to be ruled by the mediocre. So it is a good decision

Anonymous said...

It is not right for a priest to start contesting for political offices because there is a big difference between spiritual leadership and political rulership. The priest is there to pray for and assist 'those' in power, not to be one of them. A Catholic Priest has not much more to do other than the spiritual and moral wellbeing of the church. Note! "A good man with good intentions need not an association with ungodly people with unholy intentions". ....@high chief priest.

"Nigerian Politics is dirty, Nigerian Nigerian politics is dirty" who will clean it up? If you are busy wondering how he will "cough out" 11 million, u must have forgotten that the catholic church is the richest organisation in the world. it is not strange for a priest to serve in more than one capacity. Some of my lecturers in the university were catholic priests. haven't you seen a priest who is a medical doctor, or don't u know there are catholic priests who are colonels and major generals in the Nigerian Army. do we keep on folding our arms while things go wrong? I tire o

According to the 1983 Code of Canon Law, canon 278 paragraph 3, "Clerics (catholic deacons, priests and bishops) are to refrain from establishing or participating in associations whose purpose cannot be reconciled with the obligations proper to the clerical state or can prevent the diligent fulfillment of the function entrusted to them bu competent ecclestical authority." This canon saw these groups (politics etc) as sowing division in the Christian community and blurring the priestly mission.

Everyone is saying politics of naija is a very dirty game, yes I agree with y'all, but who's going to clean it up I ask? Someone messed it up afterall, so somebody gotta clean it up too, am 100% in support of the priest who wants to run for the office of the governor, afterall the Holy book says "When the righteous is on the throne, the people rejoice..." my only fear is if he can win, and again when he does, hope he's not gonna change his values, may God's will be done.

It is okay under the Nigerian Constitution, which is the supreme law. But who will be first lady in Cross River State?

Anonymous said...

He is a Nigerian and has the same right as everyone. He is a Priest does not make him less qualified. Fr should contest bo!!!

Unknown said...

If it is true, then methinks it is very very unwise of him. He should either first, resign or focus on his calling.
Cos in politics, you go in a saint, & 99% of the time, come out a sinner.

Is not the first time, till today the best Governor is a Catholic priest, i have forgotten his but he have to step aside as an officiating priest till he is through with partisan politics, is against the Catholics nons for an officiating priest to also be involve in partisan politics. but the Church is not against politics.

Canon 285 of the 1983 Codex Iuris Canoniciis a provision of Roman Catholic canon law that prohibits members of the Catholic clergy from doing things that are “unbecoming” or “foreign to the clerical state.”[3] In addition, it prohibits diocesan priests and bishops from serving in “public offices which entail a participation in the exercise of civil power.”

A group of youth known as "The Unifier CRS 2015" bought the forms for him on Nov 6, and by November 7, the form had been completed by the required number party members from he three Senatorial Districts.

Rev. Fr. Francis Agantem Eworo will be Governor of Cross River State, come 2015 because God wants that for the state, and the youth believe it! They are selling their houses, cars, properties and all to ensure that he meets the base requirements of his party - after which the rest of the processes are theirs to decide!!!

They will vote him into office to Unify Cross River State and restore her lost Glory.

A politician of a kind, who does not practice nor preach money politics, rather a politics of belief in a cause for what is right! Grandfathers are campaigning for him. Mothers are praying for him, and sons are working tirelessly for his cause - without him offering a Naira!

Isn't that what we should all look for in our fledgling democracy?

God bless your cause and what it stands for, Rev. Fr. Francis Agantem Eworo.
