Might seem a bit extreme, but I'd say the punishment just about fits the crime. Engineers are supposed to be held to a higher standard of ethics and accountability because, unlike a lot of other professions, a design error by an engineer almost always results in loss of lives. You just can't afford to be wrong... If the numbers don't add up in the design phase, they sure as hell are not going to add up when u start the development phase.
