Why Jonathan lost to Buhari – Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi speaks

Emir of Kano and former CBN governor, Muhammadu Sanusi II says President Jonathan lost the Presidential election because many people were not happy with him and his PDP-led government. In an interview with Punch, the Emir said high level of poverty in the nation played a deciding factor in the voting pattern in this year's election. He said the PDP had in previous elections consistently lost in areas that President Obasanjo had majority of votes when he contested.
"I think in 2011, it was very clear that Jonathan had lost many states in the North that had previously been won by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. And it was clear that there was a general sense by people of the Federal Government not investing in the areas where there is a high level of poverty. I believe more and more of those states began to feel that sense of not feeling the federal presence and not feeling the impact of democracy in their pockets. And I think it is extremely important for people to connect with the government and when you have such conditions after 16 years of democracy, it was natural that people would want to have a change and I think this is basically what has happened. I don’t think it is something about an individual, I think it is something that has been going on for a number of years and you could see the states won by the PDP in 1999 and what they won in 2003, what they won in 2007, 2011 and you would begin to see the changes in the way Nigerians were responding so it was a matter of time.”he said

That isn't the main reason
Voting was based on tribal n ethnic grouping
The yorubas supported buari bcos the vp is yoruba n obj presence too

GEJ spent more time pleasing the north in terms of infrastructure and a popings than any part of the country

Those idiots including you sanusi are unreasonable... when u were CBN governor wat did you do to alleviate poverty in your state

Bonita Bislam said...

C'mon ranka shi dade, hit the nail on the head
.It wasn't so much a case of Obj's loss of those states or neglect by FG of those poverty ridden states. The major reason is the INSECURITY that has mared GEJ's admin without much response from him.Even the masses in the north east knows that the poverty ravaging our region is the architect of our state governors and those in the state corridors of power.Dragging the presidency into our woes isn't ideal.I find it very ironic that the north has been clinging on to power for far too long and poverty is equally highest in the north. This should tell us something#myopinion

Truth is Mr. presidents men spent more time on gathering mud to sling the opposition with and distributing raw cash than strategizing and trying to win back the electorate. The kingsmen did him more harm than good and I believe we should all learn something from this.

President Jonathan lost the election because people were not happy with his administration, very true and I will also add that he lacked managerial skills and he has never been in control since day one . The level of corruption under his administration is another reason for his lost . He didn't mind that his government catered only for a his circle of friends and like the Emir said there is too much poverty in the land , people are really suffering. Thank God for the change of mantle and my prayers is that Nigeria will be a better, safer and more peaceful country

I beg to differ, every state has a proportioned allocation, what do the governors and the l.g. chairmen do? the voting was influenced by religion, ethnicity, political and the fact people want to try someone else...but for the north..religion mainly

Its more than just poverty. The insecurity and corruption played vital role which could have been averted with proper policies to tackle it rather than surround himself with the likes of fani kayode. GMB should be careful with the new apc converts if not they will sink his boat before the end of his tenure.

Unknown said...

Poverty has always been long existing in the north before Jonathan came on board, however GEJ abused the Nigerian wealth by allowing the nation's wealth to circulate among a few thereby leaving those who voted for him in 2011 with no infrastructural development and poor flow of resources and this sure cost him his office.

I dnt angree wit sanusi, the voting pattern was based on tribal, ethnic and religeous sentiments, the north had always surported buhari poverty or no poverty, the yorubas gave buhari the wining votes this time. Talking abt poverty, the north has had more heads of state than any other part of the country, murtala muhamed, shehu shagari, yakubu gowon, muhamad buhari, ibrahim babangida, sani abacha, abdusalam abubakar, they own the largest number number of oil blocks in this country, the federal character system favors them, and yet sanusi is talking about poverty, wat are their governors doing with the monthly allocation, they should blame their clueless leaders rather tranfering the aggression on jonathan who even tried for them, he built almajiri schools for them, 70 percent of incentives been given 2 farmers go 2 the north, evrything in the contry favors them. The voting pattern notin 2 do with poverty period!

I don't agree with Sanusi. The north since independent in 1960, has ruled this nation for more than three decades, what level of development did they effect in their northern states. People should face reality and stop circumnavigating about national issues. The poverty in the north was caused by the northern leaders who in the past never saw the need to educate their subjects. Look at the case of the Amajiris. If not for Jonathan, did the northern leaders ever thought of sending them to schools. All they do is to use them as willing tools during elections. The power blocks worked against Jonathan in this election and that was it.

LET THEM KNOW, THAT WE KNOW.

In a gradual process, we will say things the way it was, we will speak of the conspiracy that even the closest ally of President Jonathan entered in the dark against our people. We will tell the contraption called Nigeria that in the early morning of 30th of March, Bauchi State results were APC 457,786, PDP 559,897. But by afternoon on Tuesday, 31st, March, the Bauchi State results was announced as APC 931,598 and PDP 86,085. We will tell the world that the number of accredited voters was reduced from its original, the reasons we cant say.

The true results are filtering in, but it is of no use. Even what transpired in Kano State, we will tell the world. We will remind the contraption called Nigeria that those that voted in the real elections in Kano were more than those that were accredited. We will come out with papers that showed that PDP’s vote was already 407,322, when delegates at the situation room including the PDP agents decided they had to stop adding PDP votes that still had the capacity to double what was already counted. Did they stop there? NO, they slashed it down to 215,779 and converted the remaining uncounted for the Northern agenda.

Let them know, that we know. Let them know that the PDP Chairman refused to take President Jonathan’s call on the night of 30th when Mr President was told that Mua’zu had given a go ahead to disrupt the Bauchi’s votes because they feared the Bauchi’s vote was going to change the game even with all the rape that was done. Let them know that we are aware that Adamawa’s vote was slashed on the clear instructions from the INEC Commissioner after taking a call we cannot say who the voice from the other end was. Let them knowthat we will tell them what happened in Gombe.

We will also tell the world that Kaduna state results were accepted even when 7 local governments with more than 400,000 eligible voters were denied their rights to vote by the INEC commissioner. We will tell then that Jega was under some duress. When the time is right, we will speak IF IT WILL STILL BE NECESSARY. Let them know that we know. And we are taking records.

The emir of Kano was right. According to the national bureau of statistics put northwest as the most poorest part in Nigeria.

Couple to the issue of insecurity in the Northeast, that made the Goodluck Administration unpopular in the North.

Many saw General Mohammadu Buhari as the solution to all the problem and considering he's from the north in particular Northwest, they believe there will be improvement in the dividends of democracy and better living standard.

Not entirely true. PDP lost because of their hate campaign. Poverty and unemployment is evry where even in America. But while the APC was busy campaigning PDP was busy looking for Buhari's certificate and slandering him with hate campaigns. Even if you watch the campaigns properly you will see that while the PDP were busy preaching hate and religion (cc:Namadi Sambo's campaign in Jigawa) the APC were busy making some insane campaign promises. So let's wait for them to deliver. #eyesonthem. #letsmove foward. If they don't we vote them out in 2019.
