I frown trying to recall where exactly i am, i know this isn't my room as the bed isn't farmiliar. Slowly, it's all coming back to me, the light pressure i feel down there as i swing my leg of the bed. The room is dark by now and the bedside digital clock says it's 7:20, "Damn it!" i was only going to nap for a couple of minutes, i 've slept for two hours straight.
"Great, how am i supposed to get back to town, with the road all messed up" i mused to myself throwing the duvet, she must have tucked me in while i slept. I retrieved my cloths put them hastily i know my hair is all tangled from all that tossing and thrashing so i run my hands through them combing it with my fingers as i hurried downstairs to retrieve my shoes. Working out a way to face Estelle now that the booze has cleared from my eyes. This is so going to be weird.
A guy is coming out from the east wing of the building, looking well groomed, this has to be her housemate.
"Hi," i greeted him.
"Hello, friend of Estelle?"
"Yea, you must be um..." as i realized Estelle never got to tell me his name
You live here" i said instead,
"Am Mba, but you can call me MB everyone does" we shook hands.
"Adaora". I reply, he seems to be taking in my looks.
"Where is she anyway?" he said,looking round the room like she could be hiding somewhere. "ln here both of you!" she answered from the kitchen, i head towards the kitchen as MB heads to the opposite direction to the door leading outward.
"Girl i no dey oo", he yelled as he heads outside.
"Alrite". Estelle called back as i walked into the kitchen feeling a litttle awkward, shy even. Couldn't look at her.
"I have to head back?" i annonce to her still not looking at her.
" No way, it's almost eight there is no way you're driving this night. It's not safe plus i hear the roads are in pretty bad shape and the rains will make them worse!", as she speaks, she walk towards me now she is standing in front of me.
"Stay, am making something special for you, please?"
"Why didn't you wake me, i overslept!".
"I guess i just assumed you'll spend the night. Sorry".
"Fine, i'll stay". I gave up, knowing there is no way i'll risk driving through that road this night not only is it not safe, it'll be the height of stupidity. The popular tales of the notorious Nitgha Junction is enough to make the bravest of heart have a rethink.
Dinner constitute of half boiled yam soaked in raw egg, then fried served with snail stew, it smells good and also taste good. Estelle is pouring out red wine in the glass before me, we are eating now.
"I don't think i want anymore of that". She stop midair,
"You sure?".
"Yes", bobbing my head to emphazise my point. I'll go with a glass of water and maybe a cup of hot chocolate later" concentrating on my plate of food as i avoid her gaze.
