Guard your computers y'all, Isreali internet spy company reportedly sets up in Nigeria

If new reports are to be believed, then Elbits System, an Isreali Electronic Defence firm, has finally arrived Abuja to begin the installation of a $40million internet facility...which will spy on the people of Nigeria on behalf of the Nigerian government.

Premium Times reports that the internet monitoring company was contracted by the Federal Govt in April this year to install a comprehensive spying facility that will help them monitor its citizens.
The installation will go ahead despite public outcry and an ongoing legislative probe of the project that followed the leak of the contract by this newspaper. The installation is also taking place in complete disregard of the National Assembly which ordered the government to suspend all actions on the contract pending the outcome of a planned investigation." Premium Times reports
The presidency had mulled cancellation of the contract after it summoned Elbit Officials, accusing them of not being discreet enough in the handling of the contract.

The Goodluck Jonathan administration secretly, and in open violation of lawful contracting procedures, awarded the Israeli firm, with headquarters in Haifa, a $40million contract to help it spy on citizens’ computers and Internet communications under the guise of intelligence gathering and national security.

Elbit announced it won the contract back in April, in a global press release, where its general manager, Yehuda Vered, opaquely announced that “Elbit Systems will supply its Wise Intelligence Technology (WiT) system to an unnamed country in Africa under a new $40 million contract … for Intelligence Analysis and Cyber Defense.”

Sources within the administration informed PREMIUM TIMES that the officials arrived Abuja over the weekend (two weekends ago) and had installed the “big brother” device at the headquarters of the National Intelligence Agency in Abuja.

A team of about 20 Nigerian intelligence officers are currently training in Haifa, Israel – headquarters of Elbit Systems – and are expected to run the spying equipment after its installation.

The first batch of the intelligence trainees are due back in the country next week, our sources say.
Elbit says it will take it two years to complete the project, by which time it claimed, the administration will have “a highly advanced end-to-end solution, [to] supports every stage of the intelligence process, including the collection of the data from multiple sources, databases and sensors, processing of the information, supporting intelligence personnel in the analysis and evaluation of the information and disseminating the intelligence to the intended recipient…[that] will be integrated with various data sources, including Elbit Systems’ Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) solution and Elbit Systems’ PC Surveillance Systems (PSS), an advance solution for covert intelligence gathering.”

This is some serious covert operations-james bond shit! Lol! If it helps fight crime and puts an end to boko haram, no problem. But does the government have the right to spy on its citizens? Do we even have a say? Anyway, this story's yesterday's news. I trust all the politicians in the senate and house of reps, they have more to hide than the average citizen, so they won't pass the bill.

Misplaced priority. This administration is clueless. GEJ needs to inject fresh blood into his administration. Paying that much for security surveillance in a proverty stricken country is complete waste of resources.
The insurgent in some parts of the north might be blamed for this, but government should realize that politicians created and nurtured the avenue for insecurity, through corruption, bad governance, nepotism and their unguarded utterances.
All this is about 2015., the truth is that Mr President is surrounded by hawks and bad advisers

If that will help improove intelligience gathering in Nigeria, good people like us do not have anything to fear.Afterall, there is a saying in the U.S that "your best neighbour, who is always at your beck and call, are the feds.

One thing you should know is that no reasonable development can be acheived in the presence on insecurity. I assure you this will help to intecept communication between terrorist sect members in this country. It will also help in the fight against corruption. Inasmuch as I'm sure this move has it's cons it definitely has it's pros too. But then again which move doesn't? You just have to make sure the pros outweigh the cons in the long run. People like you who criticise every move of those in power are those who haven't been at the helm of affairs of anything serious. Grow up.

A very good and welcome development by Mr President,@ linda y re u telling us to guard our computers? Do we resemble membas f boko haram or dier sponsors

Anonymous said...

I'm starting to think Jonathan is a dictator hiding under a facade of affability. They may tell us this is so that they can track Boko Haram. I hope so but I'm skeptical. Instead, given Nigeria's history under both military and "civilian" regimes they may be contacting LIB commenters and arresting them for criticising his government...or one government official will use it to track the activities of his mistresses.

ary said...

There is no civilized economy that will survive without espionage or the likes. In a time like this where insecurity is an order of the day, there is need to check balance all the excesses of those who perpetrate evil using the net and this will also help checkmate in a way the movement of embezzled money. Yes it has it draw backs, but often times you have to sacrifice to conquer. Everything can't be perfect. All those calling for its cancellation have something to hide if not, why should they be so agitated? My only fear is if all these is just a charade, another doomed venture, where the money simply evaporates into thin air!

Security personnels has tried many tactics to curb this mayhem this boko haram has unleashed to nigerian still no way. Now Presdo brings another idea of cyber monitoring facilities so that it will be more easier to detect and get more info about activities of nig citizen for security purpose we are complaining. Can't we be positive for once? Pls let reason very well before we comments. Cus is not all about GEJ is about we Nigerian. God bless Nigeria. CA

In light of recent events, i can understand why the president thinks cyber espionage is a necessary move, but it just completely violates the right to privacy of the citizenry and that is the pillar of our democracy, the idea that it wasn't sanctioned by the national assembly has a lot to say about the true motive here and makes us not any different from the north Koreans living under a dictatorship, i mean whatever happened to the RULE OF LAW. besides its a known fact that advanced network of terrorists prefer the use of couriers than sending information over the internet.
