Lagos closes Oshodi market over insecurity

Lagos State Government yesterday shut down Owonifari market in the Oshodi, Oshodi/Isolo Local Government, aimed at addressing the security challenges in the area.
Lagos State Government often arrested hoodlums in Oshodi for various robberies and other petty incidents.Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, lamented that the market has constituted a menace and an eyesore to the locality.
He added that they have relocated affected traders and shop owners to the newly built Isopakodowo market stalls at Bolade area in Oshodi. The government has also started fencing-off of the set-back on Agege Motor Road that stretches from Ilupeju end of Oshodi all the way to the PWD/Ikeja GRA end of the area.

He said that the fencing-off of the long stretch of the set-back is being undertaken to assist the Federal Government and the Nigerian Railway Corporation in particular with a view to beautifying it and safeguard lives along the railway corridor by discouraging street trading and indiscriminate use of the space.

In the statement,  Ayorinde added that the Owonifari loop will be transformed into an ultra modern bus terminus with new bus shelters that are befitting of a structured park in a mega city.

He stated further that Oshodi will be sane and safe and a place where both traders and commuters would be pleased to visit and trade.

Chai but comes and a great cost, my problem with the state government is that the market they relocated the traders will be expensive for some to afford. I plead for them to subsidised the stalls for the traders. #IRepLIB

I just saw the place and a lot of people are lamenting that they came to destroy the place overnight while most of the traders had travelled to the east for the last celebration.

It's a serious demolition...

uikocha said...

Linda but the market they provided for us is too expensive,it's ranks in millions of naira, please ask the government to reduce the price of the new shops

That's a wrong step to addressing the insecurity issues in dat area. Mind u Sir,that market is where they earn their livelihood. The traders aren't the thieves bcos even the market been closed, the hoodlums are still locking around that area. That's my route from work to home so I knw wat I'm saying. Serious security needs to be mounted der and not closing shops whr people make ends meet. Thank u

When would the market reopen??? Linda take note?

He didn't just close, he has demolished the market without allowing traders the chance to remove their goods. Some traders have had their entire life investments destroyed by this APC Gov at about 1:30 am this morning.

Unknown said...

Did you make anoda provision for dem? Oya give them food Na, selfish politicians

Franklyn said...

I was born and brought up in Oshodi.. I think its high time somebody put a stop to years of menace in oshodi .. nice Move ..

Anonymous said...

Ambode why..is the new slogan on the lips of oshodi marketers (mostly igbos) as they see this new act as a plan from the lagos state government to frustrate igbo business men. The new market rent price is much higher than in the previous oshodi main market . Nobody wants to go and risk their lives in a market that collapsed while still under construction.

Anonymous said...

I heard he has also sealed ladipo market..next thing he is gonna demolish their market in the midnight without giving marketers a chance to remove their goods from the shops. I guess this is his new year gift to the igbos..demolishing of all our markets..lagos state government should just tell the igbos they don't want them in lagos again rather than frustrating them out of their market places.

Anonymous said...

I heard the marketers served the lagos state government with a court injunction but still they ignored and went ahead to demolish the market at midnight after sealing it. What about those igbo traders that didn't have the chance to remove their goods after his sealing of the market?..how do they survive? Mind you this act of wickedness on the igbos will never be forgotten.

Unknown said...

Ok nice...

Anonymous said...

Ambode is just a fat fool that acts b4 thinking..he wants to show lagos ians that he is working by destroying the shops of traders with goods still inside. Something fashola himself could not do. Even with a court injunction the idiot still persisted that he must demolish the market knowing fully well that most traders still had their goods inside shops and parking stores. The new resettlement market is more expensive smaller and risky, a market that collapsed while still under construction.

Unknown said...

Get beta means of securing

Unknown said...

Lies lies lies, dis story is nt true.the ambode led government did nt settle d traders, the relocation stuff is nt true

Unknown said...

hmmmmmmmm!

Unknown said...

Well hope it's for a good purpose.

Mr. Governor-why have you shut down Falomo POWA market since the 2nd of January, 2016 what is the problem. This is the second attempt to close this market in just a few months. The first time your people claimed that it was a mistake!!!

Funso Samuel said...

And the traders nko? Wonder how some people think with their anus. You shut down some people means of livelihood without providing any alternative and you think that's the best. God will save us in this country o.

Martins said...

Hmm @james! Well, lagos is accommodating over 25 million residents so it is expected that problems such as robberies, and other menaces will rise. On the other hand, the government should put up mechanisms to check-mate these social menace. Good decision Ambode!

Funso Samuel said...

At last, Onyx don get sense.

Will the Lagos State Government also ask all the residents of Mushin and Lawanson to vacate their houses because those armed robbers also operate from those areas!!. This is not the proper thing to do and the business owners should take the LASG to court. The governor should provide security period. After all we just paid for all those newly acquired patrol cars and helicopters. State Governors must protect the right of residents to live in peace and carry out their legitimate businesses, not take over their properties using flimsy excuses.

Why does former Governor Tinubu now own the former Ikoyi Local Government headquarters property on Kingsway Road by the way. Who authorized this?. Or was the Local Government also evicted dues to security concerns so that the former Governor Tinubu can build a luxury highrise instead?

God is watching.
