Banker arrested for forging WASCE and University results to gain employment

26-year-old banker, Daniel Makanjuola, has been arrested by the Police in Lagos for using a forged West African Senior School Certificate and Lagos State University’s statement of result to get a job at Wema Bank Plc, Marina branch,Lagos Island.

The police said Makanjuola pretended that he was a degree holder in marketing with Second Class, Upper Division, and had also provided a forged National Youth Service Corps discharge certificate and a reference letter to the bank before he gained employment. He claimed to have obtained the letter from United Bank for Africa, where he supposedly worked previously.

According to Punch, Daniel who is from Ijero Local Government Area in Ekiti State, had joined the bank in 2013, before he was sacked in July 2015 after the documents were confirmed to be fake.
It was gathered that the fraudulent act was discovered after WEMA Bank management had sent a verification letter UBA to to verify the authenticity of the reference letter. UBA was said to have denied any knowledge of Makanjuola and the letter.
After the discovery, the bank decided to write West African Examinations Council and LASU, to confirm the veracity of his documents but both exam bodies disclaimed the results Makanjuola had presented to WEMA
The suspect was arrested after the case was reported at the Lion Building Police Station.
After his arrest, the suspect, in a statement to the police confessed to the crime and explained how he obtained the forged certificates.
He said he made the fake documents because he couldn't get a job and he wanted to alleviate the poverty in his family.

He said:
“I am actually a National Diploma holder. I secured the fake WASCE and LASU results, using a search engine and CorelDraw application. I scanned an NYSC certificate and used some applications to edit it. I did it in order to put an end to the suffering of my poor family. I am the only son of my father. I want the authority to be compassionate with my case. I was only trying to live a better life.”
A police prosecutor, Inspector I. Okeke, arraigned Makanjuola at the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on three counts of forgery.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges before the presiding magistrate, Mr. A. Adefulire.
Adefulire granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum. He adjourned the case till October 22, 2015.

So why do we need to go to school and learn all the algorithms and almighty formula when you don't need them to work in a bank. Seriously, he may have committed an offence but he did well on the job. Nigeria as a nation should learn from other countries that we do not need big big book to have common sense and knowledge.

He should b penalise accordingly so dat dis wil serve as deterrent to others. Poverty should never b excuse to indulge in crime.

You said u are the only child of your parents. At least your parents do not have plenty children. So what kind of money are you looking for that made u dabble into this kind of crime? I think u are too ambitious for your age. If you have diploma, why not get a diploma job and then further your education while working so that u can get a better job to take care of your parents. Afterall, you people are just 3 as you are their only child

Though I'm not in support of forged document to do what so ever. I think Nigerian has this mentality of paper qualification before somebody can be gainfully employed. This, of course has made a lot of people to forge their document to secure their job. If all organizations in both private and government should embark on certificates verification, many people will go to jail. @http://kufekpo.blogspot.ng.com

There is this Yoruba saying that "L'owo lowo l'anra eke. Otito ku ta l'oja" which in my own understanding means "With money you buy lie. Truth is without value". For me I will not put the blame totally on the guy but also on our people at the helms of affair. If things are done the normal way without delay, there will be no room for hanky-panky. LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY as a case study has to resolve their issues and put records straight on their EXTERNAL STUDENTS results. Or how do you explain someone who finished his programme and five years down the line, his result is yet to be released! This guy is not the only person in this kind of mess. Many people, if we begin to dig deep, are also affected. Several protests have been staged and no one has responded positively! Where are we going...? It only take the grace of GOD for any man who is in this kind of problem, knowing fully how hard it will be for him if he lost his job just because he cannot present his degree certificate as needed not to misbehave... Our government should rise to the situation and help the powerless and poor people who are being denied of the right to get what rightly belong to them. We need serious change (not the political jargons) if our future as a nation must turn around for good.

While I am not in support of this young man's crime, it certainly beats my mind as to how this same person passed the recruitment process. I am sure he must have written the so popular aptitude test. And if not, he surely must have been interviewed by a panel of HR staff. How him take pass? This is the same process that even those with genuine certificates and degrees have not been able to scale after years of graduation. No be jail all the time o.

Anonymous said...

My view though,he did thisjob for two years and is not being dismissed for incompetence but for result forgery. That means like some one said earlier why then do we real, realy spend 4 yrs (in our own time upto 6 yrs bc of strikes) studying and always looking for X ( you know now "find X) when it will never be used in the work life. I have never gone to any office and see them looking for X. I think they should start teaching religious ethics and common scence realy. I stand to be corrected.

THE YOUNG MAN HAS JUST DONE WHAT MUST OF US WOULD HAVE NATURALLY DO. JUST TO SURVIVE IN THE HOSTEL ENVIRONMENT WE LIVE IN.
BUT THE LAW IS THE LAW, IF A NATIONAL DIPLOMA GRADUATE COULD WORK AS A BSC GRADUATE FOR 2YEARS WITHOUT DISMISSAL FOR INCOMPETENCY THEN WE NEED TO LOOK BEYOND THE DEGREE AND LOOK FOR PEOPLE WITH THE RIGHT KNOWLEDGE TO DO THE WORK.
ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS IS A SIN THERE IS NO MORAL JUSTIFICATION FOR HIS OFFENSE HE AS TO FACE THE LAW.

Let me shed more light, he not only passed the recruitment stages, he was given a crazy target he met and surpassed by 150% and even in his appraisal, he scored 94%, the all time highest in the history of Wema Bank for his level. He is the bad guy now because of what he did wrong but the bank is not even saying anything about their porous HR and what the guy has put into the organisation.

Lmao..tiring

Shame on him for what? It shows that the system is not accommodating. If an OND could perform the supposed duties of a graduate. What he did was/is wrong but should be given a mild punishment. The guy has got some brains to be able to all that. Be sincere with yourself with this question. Would he have been employed with his qualification? I pray God forgives him. It is well
