'The Oba’s Words Matter' - Chimamanda Adichie's response to Oba of Lagos

A response to the Oba of Lagos over his threat to Igbos from award winning writer, Chimamanda Adichie. Chimamanda says the Oba’s words are quite disturbing. Read below...
A few days ago, the Oba of Lagos threatened Igbo leaders. If they did not vote for his governorship candidate in Lagos, he said, they would be thrown into the lagoon. His entire speech was a flagrant performance of disregard. His words said, in effect: I think so little of you that I don’t have to cajole you but will just threaten you and, by the way, your safety in Lagos is not assured, it is negotiable.
There have been condemnations of the Oba’s words. Sadly, many of the condemnations from non-Igbo people have come with the ugly impatience of expressions like ‘move on,’ and  ‘don’t be over-emotional’ and ‘calm down.’ These take away the power, even the sincerity, of the condemnations. It is highhanded and offensive to tell an aggrieved person how to feel, or how quickly to forgive, just as an apology becomes a non-apology when it comes with ‘now get over it.’
Other condemnations of the Oba’s words have been couched in dismissive or diminishing language such as ‘The Oba can’t really do anything, he isn’t actually going to kill anyone. He was joking. He was just being a loudmouth.’

Or – the basest yet – ‘we are all prejudiced.’ It is dishonest to respond to a specific act of prejudice by ignoring that act and instead stressing the generic and the general.  It is similar to responding to a specific crime by saying ‘we are all capable of crime.’ Indeed we are. But responses such as these are diversionary tactics. They dismiss the specific act, diminish its importance, and ultimately aim at silencing the legitimate fears of people.

We are indeed all prejudiced, but that is not an appropriate response to an issue this serious. The Oba is not an ordinary citizen. He is a traditional ruler in a part of a country where traditional rulers command considerable influence – the reluctance on the part of many to directly chastise the Oba speaks to his power. The Oba’s words matter. He is not a singular voice; he represents traditional authority. The Oba’s words matter because they are enough to incite violence in a political setting already fraught with uncertainty. The Oba’s words matter even more in the event that Ambode loses the governorship election, because it would then be easy to scapegoat Igbo people and hold them punishable.

Nigerians who consider themselves enlightened might dismiss the Oba’s words as illogical. But the scapegoating of groups – which has a long history all over the world – has never been about logic. The Oba’s words matter because they bring worrying echoes of the early 1960s in Nigeria, when Igbo people were scapegoated for political reasons. Chinua Achebe, when he finally accepted that Lagos, the city he called home, was unsafe for him because he was Igbo, saw crowds at the motor park taunting Igbo people as they boarded buses: ‘Go, Igbo, go so that garri will be cheaper in Lagos!’
Of course Igbo people were not responsible for the cost of garri. But they were perceived as people who were responsible for a coup and who were ‘taking over’ and who, consequently, could be held responsible for everything bad.

Any group of people would understandably be troubled by a threat such as the Oba’s, but the Igbo, because of their history in Nigeria, have been particularly troubled. And it is a recent history. There are people alive today who were publicly attacked in cosmopolitan Lagos in the 1960s because they were Igbo. Even people who were merely light-skinned were at risk of violence in Lagos markets, because to be light-skinned was to be mistaken for Igbo.

Almost every Nigerian ethnic group has a grouse of some sort with the Nigerian state. The Nigerian state has, by turns, been violent, unfair, neglectful, of different parts of the country. Almost every ethnic group has derogatory stereotypes attached to it by other ethnic groups.

But it is disingenuous to suggest that the experience of every ethnic group has been the same. Anti-Igbo violence began under the British colonial government, with complex roots and manifestations. But the end result is a certain psychic difference in the relationship of Igbo people to the Nigerian state. To be Igbo in Nigeria is constantly to be suspect; your national patriotism is never taken as the norm, you are continually expected to prove it.

All groups are conditioned by their specific histories. Perhaps another ethnic group would have reacted with less concern to the Oba’s threat, because that ethnic group would not be conditioned by a history of being targets of violence, as the Igbo have been.

Many responses to the Oba’s threat have mentioned the ‘welcoming’ nature of Lagos, and have made comparisons between Lagos and southeastern towns like Onitsha. It is valid to debate the ethnic diversity of different parts of Nigeria, to compare, for example, Ibadan and Enugu, Ado-Ekiti and Aba, and to debate who moves where, and who feels comfortable living where and why that is. But it is odd to pretend that Lagos is like any other city in Nigeria. It is not. The political history of Lagos and its development as the first national capital set it apart. Lagos is Nigeria’s metropolis. There are ethnic Igbo people whose entire lives have been spent in Lagos, who have little or no ties to the southeast, who speak Yoruba better than Igbo. Should they, too, be reminded to be ‘grateful’ each time an election draws near?

No law-abiding Nigerian should be expected to show gratitude for living peacefully in any part of Nigeria. Landlords in Lagos should not, as still happens too often, be able to refuse to rent their property to Igbo people.

The Oba’s words were disturbing, but its context is even more disturbing:
The anti-Igbo rhetoric that has been part of the political discourse since the presidential election results.  Accusatory and derogatory language – using words like ‘brainwashed,’ ‘tribalistic voting’ – has been used to describe President Jonathan’s overwhelming win in the southeast. All democracies have regions that vote in large numbers for one side, and even though parts of Northern Nigeria showed voting patterns similar to the Southeast, the opprobrium has been reserved for the Southeast.
But the rhetoric is about more than mere voting. It is really about citizenship. To be so entitled as to question the legitimacy of a people’s choice in a democratic election is not only a sign of disrespect but is also a questioning of the full citizenship of those people.

What does it mean to be a Nigerian citizen?
When Igbo people are urged to be ‘grateful’ for being in Lagos, do they somehow have less of a right as citizens to live where they live? Every Nigerian should be able to live in any part of Nigeria. The only expectation for a Nigerian citizen living in any part of Nigeria is to be law-abiding. Not to be ‘grateful.’ Not to be expected to pay back some sort of unspoken favour by toeing a particular political line. Nigerian citizens can vote for whomever they choose, and should never be expected to justify or apologize for their choice.

Only by feeling a collective sense of ownership of Nigeria can we start to forge a nation. A nation is an idea. Nigeria is still in progress. To make this a nation, we must collectively agree on what citizenship means: all Nigerians must matter equally.

Please linda, publish my comments on your blog.

I have watched with little or no interest the various statement emanating from the east and west, and frankly speaking this piece is the first intelligible one though it is coming from the igbo camp.

Firstly, I am ibo by birth, was born in lagos(shodipo) schooled and raised up between ogun and lagos state. I grew up with the culture and teachings of lagosians (sorry, for not using the word "yoruba" cause even the westerners do not see them as full blooded yorubas) and I speak yoruba.

Secondly, the statement made by the oba of lagos, a respected monarch and a reverred traditional stool, I leave him to the gods to make peace.

Thirdly, I have heard so many defences broght forward in defense of the oba statement (s), such as yhe yorubas are more accomodating than any 8ther ethnic group on the face of planet earth, that I leave to the yorubas or lagosians to establish, igbos are the one messing up lagos, we are not nigerians and easily cry foul whenever any act is carried out, we are pirates, thiefs and if we don't like it here we should leave lagos.

Growing up in the west (lagos), I grew up been called such derogatory names like eater of stone, counterfeiter, itk or puma (whenever I outsmarted or outclassed my brothers from the west). I never knew why and for what such various form of nomenclature was ascribed to my person, not untill the latter days of my youth did I realize it was borne out of my ethnicity.
My father paid an extra rent of a thousand naira when we resided within the ogunseye district of idimu in the largest l.g.a of lagos. All these imbibed in me the hospitable nature of lagosians.
Furthermore, it baffles me to hear opinions like you can leave lagos if you not okay with the way we treat you and I say to them, what is thepopulation of westerners in the east as to that of the east to the west. As it ever been heard that a wwesterner or a northerner was maltreated, abused or has any igbo royalty (don't mean new generation royalty or persons who are ordinary men in their fathers land but are crowned king in a foreign land) encoraged or instigated violence against them. Please, I would like to be directed to a northerner or westerner who has experienced same.
If we leave lagos, would we get full value for all investments made in lagos both landed and otherwise, would we get in equal token our contributions to the greatness of lagos. And please no one should say we should return back tge room or opportunity given to us by thrpe government of lagos cause we truly know that lagis started working 8 years ago and that all resources were not provided by government and those provided by government are lil or nothing and quite inconsistent.
I can keep on writing the all day about my experience as an igbo man in the west and my benefit accruable but then that will not help matters. Persons occupying such positions as that of the obas are best advised not to throw caution to the wind before uttering words whether in a lighter mood or not as such as seen is capable of so many interpretations.

And finally to my brothers from the east, I think it's time you all start using your tongue to count your teeth.

Thank you

Then answer this question. What number of yorubas live in those places u just mentioned?

Can yorubas yorubas impact be felt over their politically and otherwise?

Are u among those that deny that major markets in Lagos are controlled by igbos to exhibit ur tribalism?

If other tribes presence and impact can't be felt in the east to control a political power, who told u it won't be possible elsewhere?

The truth is they hate igbos because of their competitive nature business wise. An average igbo man is a born hustler.

It's not possible for a yourba man to go to. Enugu and be shouting change because there isn't a significant number of yorubas there and even if there is, the effect of their presence is hardly noticed. But going individually, the igbos are extremely accommodating and respectful of other tribes. Ask around.

Mr. Adewale, if you read and digested her piece you would concede there is no need for the slant in your reaction. She approached the issue by common sense and charged us to live in peace. But you have responded with your tirade that Igbos are not accommodating. I am sure any person whether Yoruba, Hausa or any other tribe who has been in the East will readily counter you. As conceded by Northerners, most of the buildings and hotels in Abuja are owned by Igbos, same in Sabon Gari in Kano but Igbos there have never been schooled on which direction to vote more so when the contestants are both Yoruba! The circle of ethnicity we are witnessing today started with Awolowo reminding NCNC legislators who had won majority seats in Western parliament in the 50's that "they were Yoruba first before being Nigerians" and so should not allow Zik to form govt in Western region. They all had to cross carpet and Zik in disappointment had to go back to the east to become premier. An hausa man was then the mayor of Enugu and an Igbo man a councillor in Kano. As at today, an hausa man is a councillor in Asata within Enugu North LGA. So Igbos don't need change because our progress outside Igbo land is a testimony that we live peacefully with our hosts. The East receives and continue to receive visitors with open arms. Lots of Hausas own property in Owerri Road and Ogui road all in Asata Enugu and nobody molests them because an Igbo man will be the last person to fight you because of where you come from. They will even favour you more than their own people. We should learn how to live in peace and point out those things that unite us than things that separate us.

Nice write up but this to me doesn't address anything.. obas statement is sure something not to reckon with, it's a disgrace and no sensible person should support such statement.. But then, the Oba was condemned because he spoke openly.. What of other tribal issues? I served in the east, in ebonyi precisely.. Based on my one year in service, the igbos are never accommodating, they were hostile to us.. The community neva liked corpers, they termed us government product so we shouldn't benefit from the community but we should go and seek government in some cases.. I won't go into much details but I think this tribalistic thing is general and should be addressed generally, rather than using one man's statement to classify how Nigerians are not being fair to the igbos

The issue in question is that it is very wrong for anyone, let alone a Lagos Monarch, to threaten any tribe, no matter the context thereof. However, most of the comments posted by our younger generation in response digress way too much from the issue in question. Some responders don't even understand simple English, while some who managed to get a glimpse use senseless analogy to make their point. I cry for our country, Nigeria. Some are even too lazy to read a well written response from Chimamanda. Those of you who think that Lagos was built by the Yorubas are so daft. If Calabar, or Warri, or Owerri, or Enugu, or Makurdi, or Kaduna, or Kano, to name a few, were made the capital of Nigeria, with subsequent federal infrastructures and development, most Nigerians will automatically gravitate to these areas. Chimamanda harped on these points but either that so many of these our younger generation don't understand English or they reason with their tongue. I cry for Nigeria most especially due to the kind of future generation and leaders that await us. Thank you so much Chimamanda for a very nice response.

It's a shame some Yorubas don't see what's going on here, it's a conspiracy to take over the largest economy the Yorubas have. If it was an Igbo or Hausa ruler that said this his people will back him up no matter what. Where is your patriotism Yorubas, always giving I don't care attitude about everything. This is an infringement on our space and we'll never take it, just like no other tribe in Nigeria will. God Bless Nigeria.

STOP EQUATING LAGOS WITH LAGOS STATE. THAT IS UNFAIR. THE GOVERNOR IS THAT OF LAGOS STATE AND NOT LAGOS ISLAND. THE STORY OF LAGOS IS NOT THE SAME WITH THAT OF LAGOS STATE. YABA MAY NOT BELNG TO ANY CITIZEN BUT EPE DOES. SO DOES IKORODU AND BADAGRY.

YOU CANNOT CALL KORODU A NO MAN'S LAND JUST AS YOU CANNOT CALL OWERRI SO.

IF YOU AGREE WITH THAT, THEN THE ARTICLE SHE WROTE MISSES THE POINT.

OBA AKIOLU MAY SPEAK FOR LAGOS ISLAND BUT NOT FOR EPE.

IT FANS HATRED TO CALL A PLACE .NO MAN'S LAND. THIS IS NOT NEW YORK. AGBAJE STARTED ALL THIS NONSENSE OUT OF DESPERATION.

A black man is leading the United States today. He didn't come in as an indigene or even a settler,he came in as a slave. One thing i have noticed is that, of all the tribes in Nigeria, the igbos are the only ones that venture out of their homeland.(Reason, the unfortunate and disappointing aftermath of the 1967 civil war) and they have been there ever since. I schooled in Federal institution on the East and throughout my 5 year stay, i met only 2 yoruba boys. They were cool guys no doubt, but they were only 2.
What i'm trying to say in essence is this, no state ever put up a sign to say no tribe is welcome here. If it makes any sense to you, the igbo man is the first to allow any tribe settle in their lands as long as you have the money to pay. No matter what, you cannot ignore the contributions of the business inclined tribe that is igbo, absent government aid. We do not wish to be your governors or your rulers, though we won't mind if you appoint us (Churchmind matters), still you cannot deny our existence. It is going to take some time for all this hate to dissipate, but we will get there. I have my hopes set on this our young generation. Only until we start to look beyond the marks on our faces and our speech patterns and accents, will this great country ever reach her full potential.
That being said, please take out your PVCs and vote for the candidate of your choice.
I am igbo, but thank you Yorubas for being so accomodating and you are welcome in the East anytime you like. We would love to taste your money as well.

Hmmm. U don finish? MUMU

You just did the same thing the Oba did but in a different way.... why would you call the hausa people uneducated???? The average Nigerian is tribalistic even the igbo people so I don't know the reason for all the pretence.... we should work on our minds... the change we are looking for should start from within

Anonymous said...

Fool, u say Igbos are not accomodating, have u been to the east before, have u lived in the east before? I have lived in IB and Enugu and i tell you, during my stay in Enugu, the yorubas I saw were treated nicely to the extent that I got angry because I know how easily Igbos are taunted in the west. Yes, it would be strange for a yoruba man to hold an elective position in the east, but ask your self, can an Igbo man be a House of Rep member in Oyo or Ekiti. Lagos is different and your Oba should know that! Most people spewing rubbish and showing their hateful selves like this foolish Kemi are not even Lagos indigenes. Why did you people come to Lagos too? I don't blame all these small children talking rubbish, it is what your parents passed on to you. A yoruba kid of 5 years already knows and calls "Omo Igbo" and has been tutored that they different and shouldn't be liked.

Local Chick said...

Wow!! I can tell a lot of people have no clue about Nigeria history. Are Igbos suspicious of other tribes? Yes; and given our history quite rightly. The Igbos have been betrayed in Nigeria history and treated like 2nd class citizens. And for those saying Lagos belongs to the Yorubas, Maybe but like London, New York and so many other major cities, it belongs more to the residents who call it home. I find it appalling that the statement that man made us been trivialised. If we truly were one Nigeria, if the Yorubas and Hausas truly believed Nigeria should be kept as one, then they should be more angry at such a statement, but I suppose as long as it's directed to the Igbo man, it's not an insult.

I am so surprised at Yorubas condemning the Oba as if he's wrong, what would you do if you were in his shoes, imposing an Eze with equal rights as the Oba in his own father land?? I personally support him on that, he is a traditional ruler and I believe he is in full capacity to say that if his kingdom is being threatened. Jimi Agbaje will never win Lagos. You Yorubas condemning him should learn to consider your roots first before taking sides. No Hausa or Igbo man will condemn his ruler for saying this rather they'll support and back him up, we support ourselves and conserve our cultural heritage. You were a Yoruba before the amalgamation that made us Nigerians. Don't lose your birthright and space to anyone. Lagos is a Yoruba man not a no mans land. God Bless Nigeria.

I don't think any particular tribe made lagos.... there are a lot of people from other ethnic groups that are doing real well in lagos and have changed the face of lagos

Lagos has a mix of different ethnic groups. Some groups who call Lagos the land of their ancestors, came from places like Ogun. Some are descendants of Portuguese and Brazilians; Saros and Amaros. Different groups settled in Lagos mainly for commercial reasons and now claim Lagos as their origin. Some groups however, till stay close to their age old roots. One should not call Lagos no man's land but everyone's land. It is a mini America of its own.

First of all Chimamanda, Calabar was the first national capital not Lagos. I'm surprised U emotionally rushed ur article and made such a blunder. Anyway, black African society are socio-cultural, and by extension this factor affects their political inclinations. Africa is made up of diverse communities with diverse cultures and traditions which defines how they're ruled and live their daily lives. What's normal with one community could be a taboo in another, so Africa will never entirely fit into the western model , norms and government as well as protocol of peoples association as painted by Chimamanda, and this doesn't make Africans less humans. In Africa, no level of civility, democracy or nationality can erode people's sense of their nativity and ownership as each community exist like a micro nation. So it's natural for Lagosian or any people in Nigeria to hold firm what's geographically deemed as theirs and see other sojourners as guest who must abide by the rules slated by their native leadership for peaceful coexistence. If this factor makes the Igbos feel threatened or victimized whereever they find themselves around the country, I think they need an honest introspection. If U always find urself at loggerheads with everyone one around U, U need to check urself as U may be the cause of ur ordeal. Even Chinua Achebe in his book about Biafra admitted with all honesty that igbos are loud and sometimes overdo things. For me, he got the point. This is what in many cases is responsible for the rift between Igbos and other tribes, and unless to they check these excesses, this rift will always be. The common belief among the igbos that everyman is a king of his own could be the root of insubbordination and lack of a supreme point of leadership amongst them. A tribe rooted in such cultural belief will always have issues of insubbordination and disunity even amongst themselves.

Anonymous said...

Igbos separated themselves by themselves the moment they moved for Biafra.

All these una big big grammar concern una. Me, i wear my life jacket sleep for night and still wearing it just in case. But truth be told, the Igbo man's enterprise is out of the world. We just ask to be left in peace.
