54% of Nigerian youths were unemployed in 2012 – report

According to a data provided by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) yesterday Tuesday Dec. 17th, 54% of Nigerian youths were unemployed in 2012.

This was revealed in the '2012 National Baseline Youth Survey Report' issued by NBS and the Fed. Ministry of Youths Development. The report read in part;
'More than half, about 54 per cent, of youth population were unemployed. Of this, females stood at 51.9 per cent compared to their male counterpart with 48.1 per cent were unemployed."
With the mass sack going in various companies in Nigeria, the figure should be higher this year.

That percentage must have definitely increased.

It should be about 80% unemployed graduated roaming the streets.

Self employment on the increase..... Working from home, opening small shops, large shops....depending on how much cash the individual has.

Who de buy, who de sell????

Economic crunch has cruncheddddd deeply!

It is very expected. Output is very low in the country. It is going to be worse in 2015. Nigeria's biggest oil customer the US intends to drop 60% of their purchases.Leaving us Nigerians to drink our raw crude which we so much value and have starved other sectors becuase of. More jobs will be lost and standard of living drop. Research SHALE-OIL the energy source of the future. The US has it in abundance.

Abeg it is more! It is much more! How won't it be, when all echelon of the government and its ministries are occupied by great grandfathers. When retirement age is 60.

And here are the retardeen Bottom lickers who keep shouting fresh air! Renovating an existing airport to "international" standard, building a few roads and stealing billions of dollars, messing up the fight on terrorism and giving appointments to some Ibos is enough in the retardeen's opinion! One day when your unemployment rate reaches 100% maybe you people will think!

No wonder Linda gets so many comments in few minutes, a lot of libers are unemployed, my problem is that those that continue to serve as role models to these youth including me will only continue to promote nudity, attend parties, wear designer suit and dress, drink and rap with hennessy, go to dubai for parties while their followers follow like mumu with bleak future, no content in their music with 54% unemployment rate in same country where all these shows and parties happen everyday! wow, Nigeria must really be the happiest mediocre people on earth to take a lot of rubbish, the days of like of FELA, MANDATORS,MAJEK FASHEK,IDRIS ABDULKAREEM, who sang for us are gone. Linda you too stop dashing us money once a year and start some serious job creation instead of thinking of buying 22 million naira jeep! I don vex for dis naija pple sef, note that 54% unemployment rate for any country is a time bomb oo. Post or not, truth said one luv

Why won't there be unemployment , when we the so called young graduates have chose to be used as toys by politicians ,I don't know if we've been bewitched that we can't rise in one voice and say no to all these wickedness against us by the people we voted to represent us.

Holy Guy said...

I expected more than 54%, but its more complex than we think, Govt dont create infracstructure, most capital endowed people out of 165 million nigerians dont invest in Nigeria due to poor infracstructure and governance, rather they only invest in properties worth millions and billions most of naija invest in only oil stations and hotels where they employ less and make more money, also its hard to trust most Nigerians with money in business as they always have needs, corruption is also another problem in business, also Nigerians are more of consumers than producers and every producer/manufacturer around the world knows this! Funny stats for a nation that buys so much latest cars!but I think some governors, churches,NGOS, private companies are trying to help youth with empowerment now which is good

Imprisoning gays will give 54% of nigerian youth jobs. Nigerians are so stupid. Linda post ma comment please, nigerians should open their eyes

Unknown said...

I'm so sure the figure is an underestimate with millions roaming the streets aimlessly! I'm even more disturbed 'cos there is no end or solution in sight despite a daily increase in the numbers of the unemployed. It's a pity that Nigerian government still fights crime by buying patrol vans, guns and bullet-proof vests for Law enforcement agencies when they can use the same money to create jobs to the teeming youths thereby solving the two problems of crime and unemployment. God Help Nigeria.

put the gays in prison and all of nigeria's problem is solved. Foolish nigerians. You guys will keep suffering till the end of time. Linda please I beg you post my comment.

I shake my head for Nigerians,by now i was expecting to see like 1,000 comments on this post,if it were to be a maheeda/gay ish story, all this jobless Libers will flood the post and people like me that doesn't comment wouldn't even bother to,but alas,on a topic that hits us hard, here we are with just 64 comments,do not be surprised Abati too is a Liber....Na as we black our brain black, little wonder nothing good/ record breaking invention has come out of this country..

Unknown said...

The stats is quite wrong. They're just showing sth reasonable cos they know the real stat will be a big shame. Its definitely upto 80%. Life after school is not easy. Its not by being intelligent or having a first class. Yet its in nigeria people buy latest jets and cars and airports are upgraded to world standards. Nigeria sucks!!!

I can see your own headache....hmm eem.. You're definitely gay

Please, tackle this unemployment issues pl. Its really getting out of hand. B4 u start with that rubbish gay marriage issue. Cos we just like to deceive ourselves. A bill that says you can be solemnized outside the country as gay and the union would still be void in Nigeria? Thats the most stupidest amd rediculous thing ive ever heard in my life.

The fact remains that the Nigerian youth is not in the government's agenda at all. How can this statistics be true? If 46% are employed it would have been a different story entirely. How will they youth be employed when the 70 year old will not resign? How will their be job when their is unrest? How will their be employment when we allow foreign investors (Indiand and Chinese) to see slaves in our graduates? How will there be employment when companies use 6 months or more on just N25,000 salary jobs for a BSc/HND holder? Abati and others would have written a rejoinder if it were to be a statistics of corruption on their Oga at the top! I think as youth we need to stand up for ourselves. A nation where administrators must be at least 55 and above 80 will leave the youth useless.

Way forward: Nigeria Youth Network is a new movement aimed at Youth leadership and administration soon from now.
