Inside Nigeria's Secret Gay Club - A BBC Report

Written by Tomi Oladipo for BBC News
About 50 people, mostly men, crowd around the front porch of a social club in Nigeria's biggest city, Lagos, cheering on a shy-looking young man, who proceeds to sing a ballad.
Backstage, another man puts on his wig and takes a quick glance at his pocket mirror, before adjusting his tight-fitting red dress.
Five other men also dressed in drag outfits appear, checking on each other's make-up as they wait for their turn to perform for the crowd.
"A friend invited me here a few months ago," one chatty spectator says excitedly. "I love this place because it makes me feel at home".
Plenty more after the cut...:-)

Rashidi Williams is one of Nigeria's few openly gay human rights activists

This gathering of members of the gay and lesbian community in Lagos is held regularly, albeit discreetly, but it could soon be illegal.

The vast majority of gay Nigerians may not be interested in this kind of event but they still have to hide their sexuality in this conservative society.

Whilst already illegal, homosexuality is widely frowned upon across Nigeria and has been the subject of several bills in the National Assembly.

The Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill specifically outlaws same-sex unions.
It also bans gatherings of homosexuals or any other support for gay clubs, organisations, unions or amorous expressions, whether in secret or in public.

'Repulsive'
The bill has been passed by Nigeria's Senate - the highest chamber - and is now being reviewed by the lower chamber, the House of Representatives.

If approved, it will be sent to the president to sign it into law, after which same-sex couples could face up to 14 years in prison.

But Nigerian homosexuals complain that the stigma they face is already enough punishment for their way of life.

Kunle (not his real name), a gay man living in Lagos, is outraged by the proposed law: "How does a government think that sending someone to prison would change his or her sexual orientation?

"How logical is that?"

One of Nigeria's few openly gay human rights activists, Rashidi Williams, notes that the bill seeks to ban something which is already illegal and which no-one is publicly advocating.
"All we are asking for is to repeal the repressive laws in this country," he says.
The bill has been condemned abroad - most recently by Australian lawmakers - making its proponents see this piece of legislation as a way of protecting Nigerian society from foreign influences.

"Ours is to weigh the aggregate of opinion - what the majority of Nigerians want," says Abike Dabiri, a member of the House of Representatives.

"If majority of Nigerians want same-sex marriage, then why not?"

She adds: "You have a right to your sexual preference but by trying to turn it into marriage do you realise you could be infringing on the human rights of the other person who finds it repulsive?"

In hiding
This view is echoed on the streets of this country, where religious influences, particularly from Christianity and Islam, are heavy.

"How do you even become gay, not to mention wanting to get married to another man?" asks Okechukwu Ikenna, a 33-year-old software engineer, visibly irritated by the topic.

Friends and family members of gay people could get implicated if they do not report cases of same-sex unions because they could be seen as being in support of them.

Critics of the bill also worry that health workers who provide HIV counselling and treatment to homosexuals could be committing an offence as well.

However, some of these doctors say they hardly ever know the sexual orientation of those they attend to because it is not a requirement for treatment and counselling, and even if the patients were to reveal that they were homosexuals, it would not affect the quality of healthcare offered.

Some lawmakers have condemned violence against homosexuals but this has done little to prevent the growing anxiety among those the bill would target as its likely adoption, in whatever form, approaches.

Mr Williams says some gay Nigerians may seek asylum in countries where homosexual people are accepted, while others will have to go underground.

At the gay club, despite the jovial atmosphere, there is heightened caution, and no-one is allowed to take any photos.

The thought of being identified as being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender in a country where the public still turns to mob justice haunts some here.

And that is a huge concern for Richard (not his real name): "If you don't become discreet and try to hide yourself, even the man on the street will want to also act on the bill because it has been passed.
"If you're walking on the street and he stones you, he knows the law would stand for him because the law is against you."

i can't believe people are still so ignorant. you want to kill and imprison people for their sexual orientation? we should focus on other things, these people aren't the monsters out there, there're rapists, pedophiles, thieves and many more. i've come to realize that we Nigerians fear what we do not understand, because we don't understand their sexual orientation we persecute them for it. you don't have to understand their sexual orientation but all human beings should be treated with the same level of respect. just when you we are getting a evolved the govt. is even considering to a pass a bill like 14years imprisonment for homosexuality. it just goes a long way to show how far behind we are. one would think that with a country who was under the bondage a slavery will be very open minded to all forms of freedom, religion, sexual orientation, political views and the likes, but we give ourselves our own notion of freedom, only the kind we understand and condemn any we can't explain, this is just so sad. the christians and muslims will be saying they're living in sin, yes they are according to the good book, but no less of a sin than lying, cheating, stealing, which we all regard to be common sins, but sin is sin, there is no small or big sin, all are sins. therefore being gay is as much of a sin as stealing, lying or cheating. i end my argument saying, we should not judge people for their sexual orientation, we should let them be.

Stop comparing gay with any other sin o coz theirs no other sin that GOD hate's the most as this (sodomy), dey shud stop pretending that they were created like that this is a serious sin agaisnt God because their directly challenging God that created a man for a woman and God would surely punish them, no wonder evil is everywhere these days all because of this Gays n Lesbians. Theirs no Sin that GOD the almighty hates most as these sodomy,You better ask god for forgiveness and stop before the wrath of GOD comes down upon you because even dou your hiding from man GOD can see you clearly well so don't think your hiding and thst your club can sink down with you all.May God guide and protect us

For those gays saying they were created this way: that's a lame and lazy excuse for your sorry state. Does God create people to be thieves, whores etc? Did God create our Government Officials/Public Office Holders to be looters? The truth about one's sexual orientation lies partly in the kind of background one has - the contacts, the peer pressure, the family, past experiences etc. I have noticed that for a lot (not all) of people who went to a single-sex school, they had the gay tendencies; while some (like me) were able to fight the demon, others not strong enough just towed the line. For a lot of them, if they had recognized the act as being anti-God, anti-social, demonic and not just right and they fought it hard enough, they wouldn't have ended up as one. Just my opinion.

You'll should stop being bloody hypocrites. Now that the light is on the gays, everyone has turned righteous. You cheat on your husband and wife and you think you're better than the gays? Wake up.

Secondly, no Nigerian gay has asked for same sex union. Its just joblessness on the part of National Assembly to take it up.

There are gays in Nigeria, and you reading this, someone you're close to is gay. I assure you. Let the stoning start from your family.

Anonymous said...

To the fool that refered to the bible supporting stoning of gays:

The bible also says that "If any man takes a wife, and goes into her and discovers that she is not a virgin, she should be taken to the door of her father's house and the men of her city shall stone her with stones till she dies." Deuteronomy 22:13-21

Lets practice the bible as it is and see if even your sisters or your mothers deserve to be alive.

You bloody hypocrites, you steal, kill, deny people of justice, squader millions, do ritual killings. The people that do these live amongst and are even celibrated by you and you think its the gays that desrve to be stoned?

Fools!!

Even if no religious book condemns homosexuality nature condemns it.
First, the anus is for a different purpose entirely. Even when a woman allows a man to have anal sex with her it is still WRONG. It is not as if we hate gays; we hate perversion!
Secondly, how will people give birth? How many people can afford IVF? God knows what he is doing, one of the reasons for sex is procreation (both for humans and animals. Unfortunately animals seeems to be more reasonable! This brings me to the thisrd point; are we saying that animals know better than us? I have not seen an animal in its natural habitat engage in homosexuality! I know some perverted human souls might have trained some to do it, because I am aware some dogs have been trained BY MAN to masturbate! Why are we so cruel to invent something that will grieve our maker? Why is it that only human being devise evil inventions all in the name of modernization, civilization, freedome, human right etc.
Why would you impose a DUAL role of sex and excretion on the anus? whould you want God to make you pass excreta through your sex organs? will it be convinient? Our creator is a master planner and he has made every orgain fit for their roles.
The sexual orientation they talk about is simply sexual perversion, a twisting of the mind, an evil invention from the pit of hell. Those involved should be prayed for, there is nothing God can not do. They need deliverance that's all.

All of you so ready to point accusing fingers (and we are all sinners ooh) and to determine how justice should be meted out to humans like you!!! SMH!! You guys are so quick to start quoting the Bible or referring to the Quran when most of you do not even live by the standards of these books. Just as we all know that homosexuality is against God's laws so is fornication, adultery, judging others and so on. Most of you are fornicators, adulterers does that make you better than homosexuals? You guys should start thinking of how to change your ways first before raising your fingers to judge someone else or you think that in the sight of God you sleeping with a woman that is not your wife cos she is your girlfriend is a lesser sin than a man sleeping with another man or woman with another woman?!!! Remove the log in your own eyes before you remove the broomstick in another's. Leave the judging to God and change your own life style, these are the last days y'all. Both fornicators, adulterers, men who lie with men, liars, thieves and the others: SAME ENDING!!

You are so right. It's evil being with the same sex but the same society silently approves illicit affairs between married men and single ladies.the same "lets kill gay people" advocates see nothing wrong with cheating others in their offices or lying under oath. For the ignorant bunch, a lot of "anti- gay" people on this blog are living the 'down low' lifestyle, passing all sorts of diseases to their unsuspecting spouses. Let God judge everyone, don't do His job!

Anonymous said...

Thank you Bussy. The judges on this blog ehn! Na wa! They are the same people who think married men cheating on their wives is no big deal. Sin is sin, it is not our place to categorize them. Hypocrites!

The energy used in condemning people and their lifestyle that has not affected you in anyway, use the same time and energy to ask your leaders what they do with our resources and why they can never solve any of the country's problems.

Am surprised Noone has "noticed" (from all the comments so far) the fact that there is indeed a GAY COMMUNITY in Naija already! these comments which so far indicates an average of 1 Pro gay comment in every 3 comments actually indicates that The Gay community are already here and that is disturbing (in my opinion). Cos these comments from everyone is a True reflection of the Nigerian populace. The question is which way foward? Cos it's obvious that the Stigma and abuses towards them cannot CHANGE them, rather it makes them stronger (even though they remain in their closets). It's indeed worrisome... God help us. - Da Counsellor.

Anonymous said...

I have observed with keen interest as a lot of us have in so many words aired our disdain for homosexuality. I agree...it is a sin. But, let he/she who is without sin cast the first stone. We are so fond of playing the God factor forgetting that we are all humans...in d Bible, there is no metre for sin. Sin is sin!! The bible says fornicators and adulterers, God will judge...it never said with exception to heterosexual relations...it generalised. Some of us here are sleeping with people's husbands/wives and have even ruined marriages; yet we have the guts to speak for God. He has not asked for assistants. All sexual sin is sin; afterall, when God smote the Israelites for sexual sin in Deut 25, He didn't spare the heterosexuals. So no one should dare to think they are holier than the other...George Orwell's school of thought doesn't apply here! #my2cents

Wahala deyooooh. Homosexuality is not really a Nigerian thing. It is only God dat will save us with d rate it is increasing in Nigeria, esp. with d rate d gay men r using innocent children n young boys dat know nothing 2 satisfy themselves at d same time exposing them 2 dis act. If u must be gay, do it with an adult like urself n leave kids alone. I don't like it and will not abuse or stone them n will not treat them differently but will leave it for God 2 judge them. End-time is so near. Beware all sinners not only homosexuals but everybody that is going against God's words

Da Epic Pen said...

Quite revealing. No doubt, a majority of Nigerians are STRONGLY against legalizing, and the practice of Homosexuality, but in a global society which seeks to protect everyone irrespective of sexual orientation, it becomes interesting to see how our country can stand firm in the face of threats from world powers. And like our senior Representatives would say: "Those in support of same sex bill, say 'aye', those against say 'nay'. The gays have it!(on a lighter side)

you guys should believe it or not, we only have 30% men who are STRAIGHT. the other proportion remains GAYS & BISEXUALS.

Most of those politicians and lawmakers who are making up and passing this bill into law are not exempted in this act of homosexual-ism.

If gay guys should tell you the advances and promises they get from top respected officials in this country you will marvel.

Some say its natural or inborn, while some do it for the fact that its one lucrative biz a cute guy could do with little or less qualification.

No matter what the case could be, Being gay is evil, but you guys should not crucify them. Let God judge.

He can't make you a gay and then condemn the act to the extent of raising down a city with fire!!

the worst part is that they go about spreading this virus...to other unsuspecting people

Martin Niemöller (1892-1984) was a prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.

Niemöller is perhaps best remembered for the quotation:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

And we the gold-digging, corrupt, 'yahoo-yahoo', women abusing, gossiping, judgmental, materialistic, cheating, fornicating, adultery condoning, lying Nigerians continue to comment. Jesus was certainly speaking to us when he said “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Mathew 7 3:5

The trouble I have with these comments is really that many who point fingers and persecute others with their words, do so in the name of God. God said clearly in Mathew 22 “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law hang on these two commandments.”

Loving our neighbors as ourselves - not whether they are gay, straight, good, bad, ugly, wealthy, rich or poor. In each an every human who is created lies a piece of God and in any intolerant act or words to ANYONE, we have been intolerant to God himself. Breaking both of these two rules.

Do think about these before supporting discriminatory laws, make homophobic comments that are even worse, largely uninformed. You got to love how many even start their hateful comments with "I am educated" NOT OKAY!

Sasha fierce, despite the criticisms you are so right.God actually loves homosexuals, lesbians, pedophiles, rapists, killers, embezzlers of public funds, cheats, ritualises and be careful who u judge because you just might be watching them in heaven from a position in he'll.God hates sin and never the sinner, that is why he sent his son to die for our sins.People will spend eternity with or without God based not on what they did but rather on what they did not do.Salvation seems like a foolish concept and will shock a lot of religious people in God's eternity. You have been warned, and you that are judging ,God loves you too.

The Preacher 2013 said...

Remember when the adulterous woman was brought to Jesus what he told the crowd,'let he who is without sin cast the first stone'. Today I am representing Jesus and saying if you have never sinned, you are free to crucify these people, but his word says,'ALL HAVE SINNED' and collectively as a race we fall far beneath God's expectations.Jesus did not come for self righteous people like the Pharisees were, rather he came that the homosexual might be delivered, that the lesbian might be free, that you would stop beating your wife,or sleeping with a married man, that you would not appropriate money meant for a whole community to your family, that you would stop lying, that you would be content and quit being jealous of your neighbour.Pls don't judge, people that know God don't judge people.

Do you mean the homosexual is exempt from the effect of the death of Jesus. These are the end times not because homosexuality is on the increase but because our world is full of self righteous folks. They say openly that they know God but their hearts are very far from him.DO you have a personal relationship with God?God loves all his children including the homosexual, the lesbian, the pedophile, the cheat, the murderer and while they were or are yet in these acts, Christ died.I get goose pimples thinking of my father's love and the mandate he has given us his children to expand the family.Dear brother or sister, you are welcome to join our family of restored, saved and sanctified souls. We meet at a local assembly near you and we are millions in number. Our uniting factor is the death of Jesus cos that is the event that gave us our citizenship. Some of my brethren were once armed robbers, some murderers(like hundreds that had abortions),most were liars,I was a serial philanderer and a chronic womaniser who was unfaithful to his wife. Our father has thrown the gates wide open and homosexuals are invited too,all you need are your old sinful robes that once announced your sin dipped in the blood of Jesus.

If u say gay is was not a choice that the person just becomes gay by design then why do we prosecute murderers or arm robbers or a rapist am sure they also have reason for doing what they do. Everybody in the community can not think right some will be nerd that's why we have the law. Moreover have u ever seen same sex animals (goat, dog , chicken, etc)? even nature speaks listen.

God forbid that such a thing should be legalised in Nigeria. How can my children grow up believing that its okay to sleep with the same sex? Tufiakwa! They should be jailed for life not even 14 years. And yes, I am homophobic!

but seriously people tend to confuse morality with law. There is a thin line between law and morality. Agreed it is morally wrong to engage in homosexuality but in what way does it affect the society or in what what does it affect the law? Besides the constitution states the fundamental right freedom of association and also frowns on discrimination. come to think of it are we trying to run a religious state or a lawful state? FYI ITS MY OPINION MY CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT: FREEDOM OF SPEECH

People have forgotten that God isn't gonna categorize sin when it comes to it. Sin is sin, so if u fornicating, engaged in adultery, lying, stealing, if you're homosexual and doing all the other stuff u aint supposed to be doing( as a Christian), it's still the same hell. Make all the noise you want. We all have our sins. I know I do. We should focus on getting it right before God instead of "throwing stones". May God have mercy on us all.

Gosh....It sadden me that most people who post on Linda blog don't write from any side of intellect but just abuse and write out of point. This alone shows why some of you don't need reply for comment or further discuss on sensitive issue like this. What do you understand about equality? We say it bad that Boko Haram are killing people daily for reason we are not sure of and you think it okay for you to kill another human for their choice of sexual orientation? Seriously, you need big help and I hope you get one soon. How does someone sexual orientation infringe on your human rights? Please give me one sensible example and I will drop this discuss and go with your judgement. We should be careful how e hate cos we might be hating those we claimed we truly love. I don't have a problem with anyone being gay, they don't in any infringe on my right and I guess same for you too. Spend time doing things for yourself and stop chasing shadow of those not after you.

I wish Nigerians would take time to gain understanding. Between the evils of our corrupt government whose actions kill many daily and the evil perpetrated in the name of culture and religion, where can one begin with Nigeria. Many die in dire hunger and poverty in Nigeria, many youths are in desperate need of employment and loosing their confidence, dignity and have no real purpose in life but to turn to a life of crime. Many die in hospital beds in the hands of incompetent and heartless doctors. Too many Nigerian men do not even understand how to honour women, too many Nigerian women are beaten, raped and abused by the ones who ought to protect them, a great deal of men still lie with children under the age of 18years (rape). Yet, homosexuality ( act between two consenting adults) is so condemned and paid so much attention. I wish the passion and resources used to condemn gay people is used to better our communities and educate people on loving one another.

People who are homosexuals will perhaps read this and feel unwanted and ashamed. I think every one who condemns, write anything hateful about homosexuality, should be the one who should be ashamed. Intolerance is not Nigerian!!!!!! And we refuse to stand by this blatant intolerance in the name of religion or culture. No moral high or low here. We all have fallen short of the glory of God.
If any of you my brothers, sisters, friends, family members are homosexuals, i love you all and I am sorry any of you have to read any of these hateful comments and are having to face the intolerance of an ignorant and incompetent government and people who have no understanding of LOVE.

The issue is not whether a particular woman can't understand how another could be attracted to a fellow woman, or whether some men can't understand attraction to a fellow man. The issue is that people are different and if some are attracted to their own gender, it is their nature and they should be left alone. This topic is big, but that anti same-sex law disgraces Nigeria. I know from study of nature and history that gays have always existed, and abound in the animal world. We can't always be stereotypical men and women. Without the gay presence, there would be no culture or civilization. Numerous great minds, artists, inventors, from the ancient world to the present were gay. We're only diminishing our lives by homophobia. To say being gay is unnatural is a biological lie, as well as historical falsehood.

Each time i read the hate - filled and homophobic rants of my fellow Nigerians, my hearts bleeds and breaks. Get it straight, gays and lesbians are and have always and will always continue to be a part and parcel of Nigerian (and African) society. The same way a straight guy grows up to discover he loves and is turned on by women is exactly the same way a gay man grows up to discover he has an attraction to the same sex. just like you cant select your height, race, skin color etc, you totally have no control over whom you feel sexually attracted to! Gay people (including me) are born this way. I have learned to love and cherish myself and no amount of homophobia can change that! I am a young Nigerian man, I am GAY,) sorry, i wont come out in the open for some misguided fanatics to attempt to murder or harm me). I am beautifully and wonderfully made (as are we all), I refuse to accept the teachings of churches which preach hatred in an attempt to enslave and further the twisted ambitions of men. Sorry to break your hearts, but lots of your brothers, friends, colleagues, boyfriends, husbands, fathers etc are closet gays, yes, they have women in their lives but behind closed doors 'dem dey fuck man toto dey enjoy am'. That's what you get in a society that thrives on such hatred and homophobia, gay men will continue to have wives and girlfriends as cover ups!if you think all gay men are effeminate, you are the 21st century's biggest fool! some of the most masculine men you can think of love 'man toto' Gay men are amongst the most creative, compassionate and loyal persons you can ever come across, as long as you remain full of hate and venom, you shall forever be denied the joys of having such beautiful individuals in your lives!
am Jayke, i love Nigeria and may God bless Nigerians and wipe this destructive hatred from our minds!

(Bible) All sins are equal in the eyes if The Lord. If being gay is a sin, then so is lying, adultery, cheating, judging, pre marital sex, hating your fellow man.

These are sins all of u commit on the daily but I don't see your monkey asses going to prison for 14 years for it.

All u do us gossip gossip gossip. It's disgusting (I'm ashamed to call myself nigerian)

The LGBTs should be treated equal just as the Straights. I see no reason why there should be a law punishing someone for being homosexual. That's discrimination!
