Nigeria needs trillions of naira to have steady power – Prof.Onuoha

The Associate Head of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, Professor Igwe Onuoha said it will take the nation trillions of naira in order to get the required megawatts that will give every Nigerian uninterrupted power supply.

He said that there is a very wide gap between “our capacity at the moment and what Nigerians actually need. There are distinctively specific things that Nigerians need to put in place in other to increase the generation but it is an expensive venture for a nation of 160 million people”.

He said this at the event for Engineering students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), during a seminary organized by SciEtech University Outreach.

According to him
“We are a country of over 160 million people; our grid is testing to sustain 5000 megawatts. 5000 megawatts means that you have 5 million watts of energy in the grid.
“If we are a 100 million, it means that every 100 people in Nigeria will have only one lamp. So if you have 5000 megawatts in the grid you can only support 100 people having only one lamp. If you want 100 people to have each a lamp, you multiply 5000 by 100 it gives you 500, 000 megawatts.
“On the average, one million dollars will give you one megawatt so if you want 100 megawatts you need 100 million dollars. The exponential multiplication means that you need far large amount of money to be able to generate power to make sure that every Nigerian has a lamp. We will be able to reach that point when we are able to get all the money to make that level of investment.
“But there are several sectors in our economy begging for commitment, so if we are going to close other sectors of the economy and concentrate on power, it means that you are going to have enough money to generate enough power for 160 million people”he stated.

We can do it, let government channel all the money laundered in the previous administration into power. we as Nigerians desperately need light, Buhari can keep his animal husbandry to himself.

he truth is that no one has being able to tell us how much electricity that could be generated using solar. We have sunshine for 60% or more of the year. This amount of sunshine can go along way in helping to curtail the said amount needed to be generated vis gas-burning. In such a if they will have initiatives like AKONLIGHTENING AFRICA PROJECT.. wen have the brains, we have the other resources to embark on this venture and even bigger than Akon's but no one is talking about it. Naija na waao. We dey fall our hands for ourselves. Insuch an even, a whole professor could not even mention solar energy and it's prospectas in naija. Abeg, Akon still dey naija make una go meet am make the guy teach una how far.

This is unbefuckingliveable. I don't want to believe a whole professor gave such a dodgy mathematical analogy. The Nigerian press is in such a mess to have published such nonsense. A technology reporter who can't even report a simple analysis right.

And you; Linda, I don't expect you to know better. Your own is just to copy and paste. Olodo

Yes,we need money to do all of these things but hey, there cheaper energy sources that we can tap into, like nuclear power albeit it's not that safe but do we really have a better choice?

N I'm not too sure ,shouldn't we be making these calculations based on households/businesses n not the number of pple we have in the country . N how are we so sure we're a nation of 160m pple? Some pple have also died since the last census n Boko haram has helped in depopulating the north(we may be way less than that number or way more than that)

What ever degree, one of our major problems is over-reliance on gas, hydro n oil sources for electricity. coal is almost non existent, fuck greenhouse emissions but we must start from somewhere. Perhaps in the future we can move to cleaner energy sources; gas, hydro n oil aren't that clean either.

So, I would say nuclear, let's try that. This country is rich in uranium n there's lower chances of greenhouse emissions.

for the first time, I see a Prof who doesn't understand mathematics. 100 times what? nonsense; that is what you are. NASA did not go to the moon in just one day.

How many trillions did south Africa spend to provide steady power supply to her people?. All the money that has been stolen by greedy politicians and their accomplices is more than enough to execute the project. The monies should be recovered and be used to execute the project.

Save yourself the wahala and go solar. It's a no brainer. The govt should be thinking in line of renewable energy and not waste do much resources trying to revamp the facilities. A good example is the Telecoms industry. The entry of MTN and ECONET given every Nigerian the opportunity to own an individual phone rather than rely on revamping nitel.

@ anon 11:31, you are the biggest olodo of the century.

1000 watts = 1 megawatts
10,000watts. = 10megawatts
100,000watts. = 100megawatts
1000,000watts. = 1000megawatts
So
5000,000watts. = 5000megawatts

Did you now see that prof is right?

I see the only possible way to get enough power is through green energy solutions. Once the solar panel is set up, it could provide electricity 24/7 without any additional charges. Sounds easy? Go green!
