So sorry about Cecil. Did Cecil live near your place in Zimbabwe? Cecil who? I wondered. When I turned on the news and discovered that the messages were about a lion killed by an American dentist, the village boy inside me instinctively cheered: One lion fewer to menace families like mine.
My excitement was doused when I realized that the lion killer was being painted as the villain. I faced the starkest cultural contradiction I’d experienced during my five years studying in the United States. Did all those Americans signing petitions understand that lions actually kill people? That all the talk about Cecil being “beloved” or a “local favorite” was media hype? Did Jimmy Kimmel choke up because Cecil was murdered or because he confused him with Simba from “The Lion King”? In my village in Zimbabwe, surrounded by wildlife conservation areas, no lion has ever been beloved, or granted an affectionate nickname. They are objects of terror.
When
I was 9 years old, a solitary lion prowled villages near my home. After
it killed a few chickens, some goats and finally a cow, we were warned
to walk to school in groups and stop playing outside. My sisters no
longer went alone to the river to collect water or wash dishes; my
mother waited for my father and older brothers, armed with machetes,
axes and spears, to escort her into the bush to collect firewood.
A
week later, my mother gathered me with nine of my siblings to explain
that her uncle had been attacked but escaped with nothing more than an
injured leg. The lion sucked the life out of the village: No one
socialized by fires at night; no one dared stroll over to a neighbor’s
homestead.
When
the lion was finally killed, no one cared whether its murderer was a
local person or a white trophy hunter, whether it was poached or killed
legally. We danced and sang about the vanquishing of the fearsome beast
and our escape from serious harm.
Recently,
a 14-year-old boy in a village not far from mine wasn’t so lucky.
Sleeping in his family’s fields, as villagers do to protect crops from
the hippos, buffalo and elephants that trample them, he was mauled by a
lion and died.
The
killing of Cecil hasn’t garnered much more sympathy from urban
Zimbabweans, although they live with no such danger. Few have ever seen a
lion, since game drives are a luxury residents of a country with an
average monthly income below $150 cannot afford.
Don’t
misunderstand me: For Zimbabweans, wild animals have near-mystical
significance. We belong to clans, and each clan claims an animal totem
as its mythological ancestor. Mine is Nzou, elephant, and by tradition, I
can’t eat elephant meat; it would be akin to eating a relative’s flesh.
But our respect for these animals has never kept us from hunting them
or allowing them to be hunted. (I’m familiar with dangerous animals; I
lost my right leg to a snakebite when I was 11.)
The
American tendency to romanticize animals that have been given actual
names and to jump onto a hashtag train has turned an ordinary situation —
there were 800 lions legally killed over a decade by well-heeled
foreigners who shelled out serious money to prove their prowess — into
what seems to my Zimbabwean eyes an absurdist circus.
PETA is calling for the hunter to be hanged.
Zimbabwean politicians are accusing the United States of staging
Cecil’s killing as a “ploy” to make our country look bad. And Americans
who can’t find Zimbabwe on a map are applauding the nation’s demand for
the extradition of the dentist, unaware that a baby elephant was
reportedly slaughtered for our president’s most recent birthday banquet.
We Zimbabweans are left shaking our heads, wondering why Americans care more about African animals than about African people.
Don’t
tell us what to do with our animals when you allowed your own mountain
lions to be hunted to near extinction in the eastern United States.
Don’t bemoan the clear-cutting of our forests when you turned yours into
concrete jungles.
And
please, don’t offer me condolences about Cecil unless you’re also
willing to offer me condolences for villagers killed or left hungry by
his brethren, by political violence, or by hunger.

Strong.. really strong..you people should leave the Americans oo. They didn't start today, they can't end today.
Brilliant piece. This is obviously another side to the coin...from someone living in the trenches. A wake up call to humanity

Americans don't care bout blacks bt they care so much bout a frigging lion...gerrrerrahia y'all dumb f**k
That's so true... Americans are making a fuss about a lion when they can't even raise their voice for their fellow Americans that r only different from them because they are black... they should protest against killing of black people not for an African lion...
Thank you Jare... opolo e o ni daru! Pls tell dem oo.

BEAUTIFUL WRITE UP. ONE LOVE
You couldnt av said it any better
A very nice piece, hope this piece gets to those it's meant for. I think they (whites) really appreciate the life of an animal to that of human. Its terrible the way its going, I only hope nothing happens to the dentist, moreover, I believe the hunter is not hunting for the first time, I guess he is even certified to do so. So why all their stupid bluff...

Tell them!!! The USA always has something to say. My only issue was why some man from the US should be let off for killing an animal in Zimbabwe? We all know if some African killed an animal in the US, there would be wahala.
From that angle, I believe the Zimbabwean Government should react, just as a lesson to the US, that its citizens are not above the law.
On a different note, the outcry over Cecil 's killing was so loud, at a time when Black Americans are being killed by the Police for one stupid reason or another. We don't see any of them signing petitions. But for an animal far away in Zimbabwe they go on and on.
Ridiculous!!!
Well said gentleman
This writer hit the nail on its head. So refreshingly apt!
Well written bro... But when he talked about Americans and their country being turn into jungle concrete I won't accept that completely... I know these countries where like us many years ago but I tell you if they had someone to look up to and learn they wouldn't have destroyed all the beauty nature gave them. For us Africans we have countries to learn from which means we can actually do better as we are developing we should be conscious of these wild life's and the beauty they add to our environment. In a developed Africa with lion and elephant would make it even more attractive cos in future I would want people to start housing snakes as pet because they feel they have lost enough that's exactly what is happening to the Americans. They have gain a lot from human brains but have lost all the beauty of nature. All you see there now are just concrete we must look for a balance to develop and have nature incorporated in our development. I wouldn't want my children children to wish they have to travel outside the African to have a feel of this wild life. For Americans to feel close to nature they invented zoo. I think I have talk too much okay good night people.
Finally someone with a brain steps up to speak up on this issue. As for me I see this whole care and affection for our wildlife to be nothing more than a mere farce by Americans.
Truly so very interesting. Ndi ocha ne'zuzu for there. I no know who send dem. Linda take note!
Love it.

In fact am impress by this write up,God bless u. The white can't dictate for us,I think this is the Wright time to let them know we're they belong to t.hey can't tell us what to do with our animals,of we like we kill them and if we like we set them free.
I agree totally with the writer. Interesting and informative piece. So much hype about Cecil.
GOD BLESS YOU!!!!......CECIL KO CECELIA NI
The Zimbabwean writer is just an hungry man...saying lions kill people. Was the lion not lured out of its reserve area and killed? Some people just like the sound of his own voice

Kudos to whoever that wrote this.
Intresting write up.
Well said.
The first intelligent thing said since this "Cecil drama". When will americans learn to mind their business and resolve their own issues (ex. Moral decadence, obesity, racism, alarming increase in violent kids...) Rather they poke nose into matters in African countries and try to act as the saviours.
Did you actually read this article at all lol those people that like the sound of their voice are people like you lol cod u did not read this article or your comprehension of English language is poor like so poor that I have to stop writing here lol good night.
Imagine demonstrating for the loss of an animal that wrecked havoc on lives of poor villagers and snatched lives from them. This article is so on point. The writer is awesome
well articulated article...its nothing but the truth! i love this dude
Good read..
Dey hv started already, saw a wedding btw a woman n a dolphin on AIT news many years ago
Hmmmm odiwaigwe! Nice write up in Naija you are celebrated if you kill a lion. Only in America will somebody go to jail for what they call animal abuse talk more of killing it. But the white go freely after killing a black man.
Now a company that goes by the name Beanie baby company said they will be donating 100% of their profit cos of Cecil (lion)
God will help us to do the right thing.
This article was written by a very smart person cuz it`s true, in Zim, we dont pay attention to such minor problems. It`s only Oyibos that care about this thing.
I'm a Nigerian who reside in Atlanta, USA. My white friends ask me about animals almost everyday. They said they can't wait to see lions, giraffes, boa, etc...
And there was a day I asked if they preferred a lion to me... They all kept mute and there wasn't a reply.
And as my papa dey alwz tell me silence means NO
Funny Americans
Well written. Don't know what planet these whites come from. Tsheww
How do u mean "story"? Is it that you are so dumb to appreciate a beautiful write up? Sorry for u o... better return the money wen dem take train u goo school. U nor learn anything.
This. Is. Genius. He hit the freakin nail on the head. VERY well written!
Makes sense. Big time.
Very true.... Jobless Americans
God bless this dude jare cecil ke no na simba
@Anonymous: Well said mate. Most people that comment here just do so like it's a basic ritual even when they have zilch to say. It's annoying seeing how uninterested some people that come on here are, cos their comments reflect their IQ. Another silly person will tell u "the story is too long". Soo annoying what this young generation has become. It's crazy!
seriously., american need to stop thinking they run the world!
When they have arrogated to themselves "custodians of nature" what do you expect? They even went as far as tracking and locating the deceased lion,s family members here and there, maybe to arrange for a proper burial and damages paid to Cicil,s family. Please somebody should remind my American brothers that " a living dog (Nkitta) is better than a dead lion".
Are Africans so obtuse? This is a non-sequitur argument. The lion was led out from his reserve and killed illegally! This is comparable to killing a zoo animal!
Thank God the dentist aint black... Thry can kill themselves for all i care..stuid white fucks!!!
Nice one i must say
Lovely, this is almost poetic! One man's meat is another's poison.
In Igbo land, silence means YES! "Ogbara nkiti kwere ekwe"
Na wa 4 Americans o! Ehn??? Dey b cryin over irrelevant stuffs n u'll never see dem hash tag a black american's illegal death
Anita, am so sorry for you. You are so daft and dumb, I pity ur boyfriend
They only care about our resources (oil, animals, diamond, gold etc), they don't give a damn about us.
It's a shame to be honest. Americans r such morons it baffles me . No wild animal deserve to live especially snakes. Can u believe some of these pricks think some certain snakes r endangered n it's a cause for alarm? SMH
Not so long ago a lady was mauled to death by a lion in SA (although those animals were minding their own businesses) where were these idiots. So the life of an animal is worth much more than a human being? in fact , from that pic above an imbecile is holding a placard that reads : "I am Cecil" TF?
These wild animals should be killed if they find themselves close to pple's settlement!
LEAVE ANIMALS ALONE AMERICUNTS!
Lions kill humans and other animals, yet no white man seems to notice. Now, a single lion is killed all hell is let loose. Do they have to cry over the death of a lion than the death of human?
All you people are so dumb it is sad. The only reason why the Western world care so much about Cecil is that Lions will soon become extinct if they are hunted into oblivion. There are so few remaining in the wild now future generations will only read about them in books. You Africans don't get it. I am one by the way and I get it. It is call conservation and preserving what God has created for us to co exist not to destroy. Humans have overpopulated the world, very soon we will here by ourselves. You idiots.
This is so strong Nd deep
Beautiful write up... Great read... Now is there anyway this message could be passed on to Americans? Cause its so crazy that they value a Lion over humans... Lions are wild animals and can never be friends with humans.
he's saying the truth
Stupid americans. first they make in seem its ok for people of same sex to marry themselves all in the guise of wanting to reduce world population for their stupid ploys amd marrying animals. And now killing dangerous and harmful animals wey wan kill us na sin. stupid people and their cunning ways of brainwashing...
finally a sensible man has spoke......all the people crying about cecil should take come and take all the full grown lions to their homes.....
These oyibo people are funny really... so they take to the streets to protest the killing of an animal in another country but they have no problem with the killings going on in their country... like the Planned Parenthood scandal, aborting and selling baby parts. God help us. #DefundPP #PPSellsBabyParts
wow!!! this is quite interesting.
Its good to know that the education we Africans acquire abroad has not coloured our judgement; truly, all the noise about Cecil smacks of hypocrisy from the western world...a white boy shot at a congregation of worshipers and killed nine people, including a serving state senator, and the 'hashtag fever' had less than 2000 contributors...really absurd and it will take a lot of convincing to make me believe it would not have been otherwise had those unarmed worshipers were "white".
Anyway, I must make it clear that I do not agree with our wildlife conservation inputs in Africa...we as the people, and most importantly, our Governments in Africa should do more so we don't end up like the Americans. Humans and wildlife should be protected...with priority on Human Life.
God bless all LIBs
still can't c my comment
Hw long does it take 2 approve??
Wow! Am so smitten by this artly done article. How I wish the whites that love reading, would read and try to understand this; especially the parts that says, "...and Americans who can’t find Zimbabwe on a map...care more about African animals than about African people..."
So sad, so bad, but so true.
