Event blogger, Helen Ozor writes on how she was robbed in UNILAG

Helen writes below...
A lot of things happen to people at the University of Lagos but we only get to hear a few of these things or we may not even hear about these things at all. For about a month, I have been taking photography classes at Yaba. Yesterday, August 4th, my photography coach fixed our class at the Sports Centre at the University of Lagos. I drove into the premises at about 2pm. Meanwhile, a sporting event organized by MTN took place at the sports centre yesterday.
After my class at about 5pm, I got to the car park and discovered that my car had been burgled with three of the glass wand down. My camera bag containing 2 lenses, 64gig memory card, batteries, camera cable, blackberry Q10, another bag containing my wallet, notepads, GTB ATM card, ID card, voters card, money , drivers Licence were all stolen from the car. I also discovered that my car key could not lock the door. The security guards at the sports centre referred me to their security office where I made a statement. After I narrated my ordeal, one of the security officer said 'You're lucky they didn't go with your car'.
I was also asked to report the case at the Sabo police station. When I narrated what happened to the officer in charge of the case at the station, he made me understand that this isn't the first time people would report cases of theft to them. Apparently, the situation is getting out of hand. Just incase you would be attending an event at Unilag or you have some engagement within the premises of the institution, please note that your things are not safe. You park at your own risk despite the presence of security guards.

What's "wand down" pls? Can anybody help me?

Not that am justifying the act but its always wise not to put ur bag and valuable stuffs in your car and lock it thinking its safe. That eventually will attract those low life people. Next time lock them in the boot so when they look through and find nothing attractive they move on . Its simple security sense in naija

Lyna said...

Sorry about ur loss but it is always adviceable to keep bags in the trunk(or bout)as the case may be,if the bag is seen in the car, some of these things are inevitable.

To bad for people to be experiencing this at a renowned citadel.
Sorry, Helen!
I just pray this animals are one day grabbed at their balls.

Over 15 years ago while a student of the same university, something similar happened to one of the lecturers. His laptop was stolen from his car parked in the car park of one of the faculties.
I don't know what the work of the security guards there are if such thing as forcing doors of parked cars open is happening under their nose.

This post just cracked me up, especially the part the security man told her "" u are lucky they didn't go with ur car"""" lmao.......but how did she get all the money to buy all the gadgets ahe just mentioned......am sure she exaggerated just to feel important.... Sorry sha........Henry Eze

I Emphatise with her. However, its common knowledge that you dont leave any valuables or bags in clear sight when you pack your cars. You hide them under your seat or lock them in your trunk. Most car burglaries are opportunistic crimes. Something attracts the criminal. While the crime rate in nigeria is abysmally high, this sort of crime is common everywhere in the world, even in countries with the highest level of civility and correspondingly low crime rates. Simply, if you car aint got fully tinted Windows, lock your valuables in your trunk or haul them along with you. Hope this helps someone.

Always ensure that you keep your personal items (purse, cell phones, tablets, etc) out of sight; don't place them on car seats or any place in the car where they are visible to people from outside of the car. The safest place to keep these personal items ( if you don't want to take them with you while leaving your car) is in the trunk. And please place these items in the trunk before you arrive at the parking lot to ensure that no one is watching. Be safe!

Stuff like that should be in your booth not visible

Anonymous said...

She should have locked all her bags in the boot. Who in this day and age leaves their handbag and all manner of things in the car itself, that is just attracting pests. Is she new to the world? From naija to yankee, babes lock all their stuff in the trunk at the very least. Sorry o.

Lady...no pity for you...

And the way you started your nasty and offensive narrative makes me feel you deserve what came on you!!!

What do you mean by such shit as "A lot of things happen to people at the University of Lagos but we only get to hear a few of these things..."

I am an Akokite; Linda is an Akokite. Tell us about the "lot of things that happened to us for being Akokites of which only few reached the media...

You are an IDIOT to suggest that it is only in Unilag campus that things happen!

Good and bad things happen everywhere and Unilag is part of everywhere...

Everywhere in the world cars are parked at owner's risk, except if you contractually commit the security of your car to another...

If you think that the school owed you a duty of care to give your car special oversight, why don't you sue it for negligence and recover damages, than come here to write rubbish when ordinarily the blame ought to come down on you for your naivety, lack of circumspection or security-consciousness...

Fool!!!

That you parked inside Unilag campus or any other university campus for that matter does not guarantee you immunity....

Guess your car must have been stolen by one among the legion of silly visitors like sorry you who throng the institution for one event or mischief or the other..

Yaba Tech and LASU are there...

Why didn't your instructor think of those before settling for Unilag?!

From MTN to Everybody else, Unilag is often the choice destination; but once stuff happens, they are always quickest to join the bashing train...

IDIOT!!!

Are you ok? Writing a comment is not mandatory on any Blog. It's for info and enlightenment please.

U attracted them with ur bag. Btw, u left so many valuables in ur car for too many hours. Sorry, lesson to be learnt

ary said...

First of all, the wisest thing to do when parking a car, is take everything that would attract attention to it and place it out of sight, preferably in the booth. Leaving it in plain sight is like display it in a show glass and calling for you to be robbed.

It's the sad reality of our government workers. They do nothing yet expect to get paid. A government job is known as a ticket to free money till retirement for doing nothing. Very sad.

They must have spotted her at some point, then followed to make sure she's busy with her trainer, before they struck.
If they had stolen her car, after reporting with the police, she would have gone online to report at www.stolencars.ng

Its a website to report stolen cars and buyers check there before buying used cars. They also search the internet to see if the thief plans to sell online.

Royal priesthood...you are a fucktard for your damn comment about UNILAG! When people are robbed in broad daylight in banks and churches, do you hold them responsible? UNILAG has signs all over the place telling you that you park your car at your own risk. So how is UNILAG responsible for her loss??
If it had happened at that village school you went to, will you even post? That is if you even went to a university because the way you talk sometimes is appalling. You better change your name...there ain't nothing priestly about you and you definitely don't talk like a royal. You sound like a peasant!

Unknown said...

U not in oversea y leave ur stuff in d car like dat

Unknown said...

Money maker u need deliverance with ur tribal nonsense,to the woman involved how on earth should you leave stuff in your car, here in developed country we leave such in d car boot, not to attract such.no be only in naija dem dey steal.

Anonymous said...

Too bad your things were stolen and its just not right.

However, please note that parking is always at your own risk and so the security men can't be held responsible.

Also next time, please put all valuables in the boot. When things are left in the car, car seats and all, it attracts these thieves and thank God they didn't go with the car like the security men said.

This doesn't apply in Nigeria alone. its all over.

God save us from these thieves.

Unknown said...

Your Retarded looks says it all.

So sad and im sorry about your loss. Hope the state of security can be improved

This kind of stuff happens anywhere.
Just as a precaution, don't leave around in your car. If you have to leave stuff in your car, put it in yoor boot so it is out of site

Hope the catch the bugulars

Anonymous said...

Your stuff will be stolen from your car even if you are overseas so that is a dumb thing to do
