Buhari approves actions to fast-track environmental clean-up of Ogoniland- Presidency

Press statement from Presidency
In keeping with his avowed commitment to working for the development and well-being of all Nigerians, President Muhammadu Buhari Wednesday in Abuja approved several actions to fast-track the long delayed implementation of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) Report on the environmental restoration of Ogoniland.

The actions approved by President Buhari, based on recommendations to him by the Executive Director of UNEP, the UNEP Special Representative for Ogoniland, Permanent Secretaries of the Federal Ministries of Environment and Petroleum Resources, and other stakeholders, include the amendment of the Official Gazette establishing the Hydrocarbon Pollution Restoration Project (HYPREP) to reflect a new governance framework comprising a Governing Council, a Board of Trustees and Project Management.
The President further approved that the HYPREP Governing Council should be composed as follows:
Ministry of Petroleum Resources - One Representative
Federal Ministry of Environment - One Representative
Impacted States (Rivers) - One Representative
Oil Companies & NNPC - 4 Representatives
Ogoniland - 2 Representatives
United Nations System - One Representative
Secretariat - Headed by Project Manager
He also approved the composition of a Board of Trustees for the HYPREP Trust Fund as follows:
Federal Government - One Representative
NNPC - One Representative

International Oil Companies - One Representative
Ogoniland - One Representative
United Nations System - One Representative

Following a meeting held on the directive of President Buhari, it was also agreed that a contribution deposit of 10 million United States dollars will be made by stakeholders within 30 days of the appointment of members of the Board of Trustees for the Trust Fund who will be responsible for collecting and managing funds from contributors and donors. .
A new implementation template has also been evolved at the instance of President Buhari, and the environmental clean-up of Ogoniland will commence in earnest with the President's inauguration of the HYPREP Governing Council and the Board of Trustees for the Trust Fund.

I have never really supported Buhari previously, not that I'm a fan of Jona either but I didn't really like d way APC had been branding him as evil as if they are 'angels'. But I must say this, if this clean up comes to light, SHAME on Jonathan. I'm not from SS, but I lived there for more than a year and experienced some of their probs. That recommendation has been how old now, a son of the soil had powers but couldn't implement a recommendation that would work for his people, probably bcos of minor in house squabbles with Ameachi and co. I worked in the health sector and saw pple who lived in front of oil wells in abject poverty . The waters were contaminated and they had to live with the effect of the pollution whilst their rulers, chiefs, americans and others benefitted from their misery. Shame on that fatty bombom dokubo too. What was he fighting for ?

U just spoke my mind..Honestly I pray it comes to pass

With tears in my eyes I say thank you Buhari, My father told me ten years ago that you are a good man but PDP painted you black. May God bless your land be forever. I am from Ogoni.

God Bless u PMB, may he continue to grant you wisdom and cover for ur inadequacies.Honestly, if we want to enjoy this country we should pray for it and our leaders and stop this divude and rule game.

True talk. Suppose GEJ forgot about the predicament in his own backyard. Shouldn't charity begin @ home?

ehya poor ogoni people..i really pity them...you all can see that we dont need soothsayer to tell us that change is gradually evolving..God bless GMB..Jona should cover his face in shame!

Jonathan was an incompetent fool. I think we all (apart from tribalistic simpletons and religious fanatics) know that. He didnt even mention anything about resource control for his people dt pple like ken saro wiwa died for. Weak.

This is a good development from d Govt but giving d job of cleanup to a consultant while their is a Govt agency (NOSDRA) is a waste of resources and opportunity for Nigerians working in such agencies to gain a life time experience that will be beneficial to the country in a long run. It is high time we stop deliberately making our own Govt agencies redundant by making a few consultant billionaires n holding d nation to ransomes at the end. My opinion though.
