LIB reader narrates how he got robbed in traffic by petty theives & what he did about it (photos)

A LIB reader tells his story. Read below..
"I was driving on the lekki express at about 10pm, i had just driven passed the second round about, the road was free up until about half way through to the next round about. I decided to wind the windows down to save gas as its scarce.
My battery was running low on my phone (P9981) so I grabbed my power bank to charge it. A few minutes later, some guy suddenly came at my side of the car and said something I didnt quite hear and immediately shouted "wetin?", leaning sideways incase he became aggressive but he hurriedly walked away, then I heard something move from the front passenger side, I looked and saw some else running away, then it occured to me what had jus happened, f@#* my phone!
(i was charging it and left it on the seat with the power bank, silly idea) i quickly searched the seat and lo and behold, my phone was still there. The fool had taken my power bank and usb wire instead. You see, the power bank looks like an iphone, slick, black gloss infront and chrome behind. I got alot of compliments for it. That must have deceived him.
People around saw that someone stretched into my car and ran with something and no one showed any sign of empathy or alerted me of the theft as i was skilflully distracted by the other guy.
Anyway, as i drove on, with my windows "over up", i started reflecting on how lucky i was and then i became increasingly upset that i fell for that cheap trick. I made up my mind and turned back when i got to the 3 round about. I had a feeling that by then, they would have realised it wasnt a phone. As i apprached the exact spot where i was robbed, on the other lane, i saw the boy who distracted with about 8other boys looking on for their next victim (i assumed). Then i wound down and shouted, "ona dey plan another robbery abi, you think say ona sharp abi, you no see my phone carry, thiefffff, oleeeee!!!!"
They turned around and one of the boys asks, "who rob you?" and i pointed at the boy, he immediately denied it, saying he wasnt a thief but the other boys who apparently didnt know him, were street hawkers, attempted to grab him and then he ran, manoeuving between cars in that traffic. I immediately hit the gas, to see if i could intercept him. By the time i made it back to the other lane, they had caught up with him, he attempted to scale the wired fence LCC installed but his foot got tangled in the fence, he was dragged down and pounced on him heavily. I got down, popped my trunk, took out the jack winder and introduced it to his back (which i regret now). All the while he kept denying it but couldnt give a good reason for being on the road.
Passers by also had their share, some people said they had been robbing people in traffic for about 2weeks straight, tonight was for the owners.
I decided it was a matter for the police & so i called the RRS at lekki ikoyi toll. They were there in 10minutes. I explained what happened, he attempted to deny it still, half way through his denial, he recieved two solid policeman slap. One of them asked, "oga wetin make we do with this one as we no fit prosecute am, normally, we go carry all these born throwey go lagoon fire them" I said NO OH! That they should lock him up and drill him till he produces all his accomplices. They bondled him in handcuffs and took him away.
Surprisingly, they didnt ask for money but guess who did, the street hawkers...
My narration is long but i need to detail you to be able to visualise the whole drama. It felt good, who knows, he could have graduated to gun point robbery
Im sure there are Libers who have had similar experiences, have you?

One of them asked, "oga wetin make we do with this one as we no fit prosecute am, normally, we go carry all these born throwey go lagoon fire them". Police involved in jungle justice and present IG should look into that. The police that knows the car stealing during those hours and not patroll or deal with the issues are the Real Thieves. Mbok

Trust me, he will never confess even at gunpoint. I had a similar experience @ Obalende. I think they are under oath not to spill. The police can only detain him for 48 hrs max as there is no proof and u didnt take him to court. He will still end up doing gun - point robbery.

I support you.. Nigerians needs to start taking things seriously and punish people for their acts. It might be a power bank but its still a crime and he should be punished. Some people might curse you out because its a power bank but you did the right thing.

Brave show... ! but can you take a minute to reflect if the chap wasn't really the culprit ? Cos you were distracted, and couldn't have recognised who pinched your power bank at that moment. Should have retrieved your power bank after forgetting your jack lift on his rear ribs. How sad.

I've been a victim of traffic robbery a few times but I just hope you weren't mistaken and punished an innocent boy for nothing.

OMG!!! Funny enough, I've had a similar experience while I was stuck in traffic... the same tactics used in drawing my attention away. My front windows were down cos the AC had an ish. One guy came up to my side and was talking incoherently... before I could say Jack Robinson, I literally saw my handbag which was on the floor of the passenger seat been lifted up in the air. And luckily for me, I had removed my BlackBerry Passport from my bag, as I was chatting with it earlier and placed it in an open compartment beneath the stereo. My wallet which had all my atm cards, driver's license, id card, money + my office fone in the bag was carted away. I was shell shocked at what had just happened to me. I alighted from the car and saw noone in sight. Passersby asked what happened and I said I had just been robbed and they were like, 'you don't wind down while driving ooo... at least, not completely down'. What an experience!!! Reported at the police station the next day and then went to the bank to block my cards.

Love your courage and glad he was arrested by the police. I Have had my own share of attack along cms bridge, immediately I spotted him den it was too late to wind down, I quietly hid my phone nd laptop under the seat. was so scared I pleaded with him to take money coz it seemed he had a gun. People are always scared to interfere which is wrong. It's better to alert the police when you witness a robbery. You might just save a life.

LIB reader, do the right thing and check the suspect is giving his proper right to justice and you as a witness should attend court and submit a victim statement. I thought with the new broom of Buhari change which equtes to human rights and justice is what Nigeria is looking forward to.

We all scream "change", yet it's obvious we need that "change" even more. You caught up with him, "drilled" him, called the police who drilled him the more, and still asked them to take him away and "lock him up...and drill him". You assumed the role of the complainant, police and Judge! All for a power bank! We all carry a big baggage from the military Era. When is it going to dawn on the average Nigerian that no one- not even the police has any right to lay their hands on anybody? The mostly pedestrian contributors on this page will cheer your incongruous story, but be rest assured that there are several readers of this page that have a better IQ than you. Sorry about your power bank, but next time, don't play the judge and jury. Hand him over to the police, and don't tell them what to do to him. Come to think of it, did you say the police suggested shooting him? I'm lost for words. Nigeria, I hail thee. A very Big Banana Republic!

So if the man is dead from a beating due to street justice, and the Lagos state government is looking for the culprit, they should issue a subpoena to Linda to provide your email address so that they can assign you the portion of the beating that relates to your jack winder - like maybe a broken spine or something like that. Not to sanction stealing but some stories are best abbreviated. You just labeled yourself a potential murderer or accomplice and you just left bread crumbs to lead to you.

1) Going back was a very silly move and NO ONE should be advised to do that! You are blessed that you didnt get attacked or killed when you did that!

2) Using the jack winder on the person's back wasnt right. You already had him stopped, what if you had paralyzed him by doing that??? Yes, you easily could have done that! All because of a phone charger, no matter how stylish it is!

3) Its 10pm in Lagos, and you are winding down windows, and slowing down to charge phone. Your focus should have been on getting home.

4) Have you considered setting up some kind of rehabilitation groups for youths? We all have our parts to play. What you did, while it may have given you personal satisfaction, did absolutely NOTHING for you, the guy (if he really was the thief) and the community. This is what our problem is in society, we are missing the point. Attack the problem at the roots. How about serving as a mentor? In Yankee they have big brother/big sister programs for this reason.
Just pray the police didnt kill him, all for this your almighty power bank.

Not sure whether to get annoyed at you for sending this story or Linda for posting this, when there are more impressive heroic acts going on in Naija on a daily basis.

A number of things struck me here
1. No one leaves windows open in traffic and put mobile phone ( or valuables) on the seat.

2. It is his words against the chap that was caught. The so called charger was not found on him. Nothing was mentioned to have been found on him. This chap may just be guilty of looking like the guy who robbed him.

3. He hit him with a jack winder......wtf. for real? That is assault on its own.
