Student loses 90% of her skin and left almost blind in horror drug allergy

24 year old student Khaliah Shaw was left almost blind, screaming in agony and lost 90% of her skin as a result of a rare allergic reaction to a common prescription drug she was prescribed for bipolar.

When she first started experiencing discomfort, Khaliah, from Georgia, US, was told she had the flu but one night she woke up to agonising pain as her skin fell off. Her hair and fingernails had also fallen out and her body covered in open wounds.

She was prescribed the medication, Lamotrigine in 2013 while a student at Georgia College and State University and within a month of being prescribed the anti-seizure drug, Shaw had developed a purple rash, and had blisters inside her eyes and mouth, and on her hands and feet. Doctors initially had no idea what was wrong with her, and isolated her thinking she had an infectious disease.

She had to be sedated for five weeks. She had to relearn how to walk, sit, stand and feed herself, and was kept in hospital for seven weeks.

Khaliah is now raising awareness of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, the condition which nearly killed her

"It was a shock to see that... all my hair had come off. I didn't have any fingernails. When I realized all my hair was gone, I cried," Shaw wrote on her blog. "When my friends came to see me, I cried. When I realized I couldn't walk, I cried. When I left the hospital, I cried. EVERY time I look hard enough in the mirror, I cry. Crying has become my thing because…I don’t know what else to do! I literally feel like I woke up in another persons body.

"It breaks my heart when people stare at me. It tears me up when I sense that people are weirded out by my appearance. If I choose to stop living, then SJS wins. And we ALL KNOW that is NOT happening! Not today. Not tomorrow. So it’s time to put on the armor of God and fight. HARD."

"It still haunts me to think about everything they did to me while I was in hospital. I can still hear the IV machines beeping. I never want to end up in the burn unit EVER again. There are still things I avoid to this day because it reminds me of that time. And no amount of discomfort is worth getting SJS again. NONE.”

Shaw hopes to return to university to continue her graduate studies in public health, but told Fox Los Angeles: "The biggest thing is I would love to have my vision back."

She still has an amazing smile, even with her skin that way.. ''Not today, not tomorrow, so it's time to put on the armor of God and fight. Hard..''
Amazing how strong some people can be.
I pray God sees her thru.

I hope she's suing somebody for her pain and suffering. From depression meds to this? Amazing! This is why I don't believe in medicating for mental conditions. The meds cause chemical imbalances and, per this story, ghastly physical ones too.

Stevens-johnson's syndrome is quite more common than we think and can occur upon the usage of any sulphur based drug by pple who are allergic to it.. . E. g of some common sulphur based drugs are septrin, fansidar. . Etc.. . And so dts y as pharmacists, we ask if there are known allergies to sulphur before dispensing, for trust me.. . Ull know.. . D easiest way of knowing is if u used any of dese sulphur based creams (damatol Etc) and u feel some burn or rash.

Steven Johnson's syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are d 2 most common side effects of lamotrigine and they are both life-threatening
But this reaction occurs in 1 in 1000 patients and if d drug is suddenly withdrawn
She was just unfortunate to b 1 of them but d good news is she may regain her site

I could not help but I have to tell you this dear, sickness is relatively everywhere in this world. The difference between the oyinbo and your people is that they will go into an extensive research to find a solution to a problem, but your like-minded people would throw the victim to an "evil forest" and claim that sickness like that doesn't exist. If you think that Nigeria is limited to simple headache and malaria, girl, you are mistaken. However, I praise for God for giving us our daily bread.

Unknown said...

It's well, and may d Lord heal her miraculously IJN.

I see Lamictal prescribed more and more these days not for bipolar but for chronic migraines and weight loss. A lot of physicians are unaware of SJS and TEN as adverse effects otherwise they will not prescribe them for these conditions. We gotta be careful......

SJS can occur after use of ANY medication.. Not jus sulphur based drugs.. Or antidepressants.. Sometimes even happens without prior use of any medication.. More likely to happen in people who are immunodepressed though.. Eh hiv.. Ca,DM

Unknown said...

Ds life nawa, one sickness or d oda.

If this happened in Nigeria, you all would have opened your mouths to insult doctors.
Upto the point where some idiot wrote that Nigerian doctors should even stop working since they don't have the tools...
This one happened in US, we're all saying "Eyah..." Na only for your own house, you'll be despised&^%$@#

Nwadihott said...

Exactly this same thing happened to my sister here in nigeria ...it was almost so late befoore we realised she was reacting from the drugs.
