What is her point, should parents ban their kids from smartphones?

Ethel said...

Nice points Nse.....let a child grow freely with certain boundaries till a certain age....And be a positive impact to ur child as a parent cuz children see the world thru their parents eyes......not just the Mother also the Father

Well, I think parents should monitor and learn to understand their children and not necessarily putting so much restrictions because believe it or not, they will know what they want to and explore with anything Bcs it's part of their developmental process...just pray for them and lead them aright when they are going astray.#my2cents

My dear,it is ok o,my son is 5years old and he is a guru in anything that has to do with phones, tabs, computers, electronics basically... As long as you monitor what they do,it is ok to allow them have access to them "smarties"

At a tender age I wasn't exposed to it
So any child of mine will emulate my
Kinda upbringing.
Can't spoil my baby just becux I wanna pamper
The child.

Could remember when while watching the television with our parents, and a scene of two people kissing, we close our eyes.
Times have changed, but we should remember God hasn't changed his standards.
Parents should be careful the type of exposure their children get.

I don't think is right, they can handle phones but not the one that will give them access to the internet

I believe whatever way you teach your child, let it be good morals. Don't just teach them how to behave inside.

If a child can watch television programs -cartoons,sports etc,why can't they use smartphones? This is 2015,flow with d time...let them use d smartphone, but monitor it,give out rigid restrictions....

The candid answer is once they attained school age you don't have any control over them anymore. Unless if you'll be with them 24/7. Below that age the child is yours to mould the way you like. But the ultimate truth is your child and smartphones or smart devices are inseparable in this age.

It helps the development of their brains... Nigerian kids are suffering from inability to express their self without being put down or beaten... I think every child from 2 should at least have a notepad but not a phone. shes made some valid points

NaijaDeltaBabe said...

Well, I feel dey should from d age of 10

Unknown said...

Good question.
I think parents shouldn't introduce children to smart device too early, but at a certain age with supervision.

Unknown said...

U av said it all...

After Chinese proverb you come to African Proverb...
Well I love this actress and believe in her thought of life

Unknown said...

Is not good to expose children to smart fon or other smart device until d r of certain age(15)my personal opinion!

Unknown said...

She has a point tho...good questions, parents start answering

Unknown said...

In as much that I try to bring children up in d principles of d Lord God Almighty I thin there are apps u can download on smartphones which are educative to children but internet connection should b excluded

It's a No No No for me... No smart phone

A child shouldn't own a smart phone at an early age. There's so much going on on d internet that kids shouldn't be exposed to. I agree that a child should see d world through d parents eye.

Things are changing very fast.
I am a Nigerian school teacher in one of the International Schools in the Middle East, all pupils in Years 1 & 2 do the weekly Homework online, I am talking of 6-7 year olds. They bring ipads, tablets, laptops to school and DO use them to read stories, do Homework and checks topics up. So, please, encourage your children to start using these gadgets early in life, if you can afford them. But, ensure you put parental control on sites they can access.

A smart phone for a child? No. From 18yrs of age is ok. Parental guidance is necessary.

Unknown said...

It is not wise to expose children to such smart devices because what children in JS1 now know I couldn't imagined it while I was in SS3. The chinese proverb made sense.

I completely agree with the Chinese proverb. Dats the least we can do for our children, (protecting them). Linda take note!

Some valid points raised here. Sheltered kids often commit the most atrocities when let lose.

I deff agree my daughter has been addicted to the ipad since 1,she is now 2 and half now restricting it and she is developing so much more, however i find it such a good thing for busy parnents ,but it not fair to give them just to keep them busy

Nse, you can give ur Kids smartphones and devices for they were born in the hi-tech age. However, read about the impacts of these devices. they include Physical issues - poor attention Span, needing glasses for distance early, and the social aspects- inability to communicate well with fellow humans, poor human interaction Skills , poor ability to synthesize information, loss of writing skills in terms of handwriting, spelling, sentence formation, inability to operate effectively in teams and unfortunately, the workplace is about teams- In the USA, we are finding these graduates who cannot think for themselves but need google to tell them what to do. its as if they woke up from sleep and WTF, I have to whaat? where is this place-....

So Nse, the exposure is necessary but the role of parents and peer exchange in development cannot be replaced with devices and that is what most parents are doing now.

Obiora jamal said...

I.believe children shouldn't be allowed to use smartphone at early age based on my.prerogative as a Clinical psychologist with this quote from a behavioural psychologist named John Watson which says Give me a dozen healthy infants, well-formed, and my own specified world to bring them up in and I'll guarantee to take any one at random and train him to become any type of specialist I might select - doctor, lawyer, artist, merchant-chief and, yes, even beggar-man and thief, regardless of his talents, penchants, tendencies, abilities, vocations and the race of his ancestors.

She's making sense, we must draw the lines.

Sure.. I Agree with her

There's nothing really wrong in it, it's just for the parents to always make sure they don't go in the wrong direction

Indeed they r born into it and should b allowed to use d device's but under supervision and guidance of their parents/wards.

D last msg I quite disagree wit d msg bcos children of dis days they see d world via their environments and other areas not just restricted to via their parents.

Am not against that, but parental guidance should be enforced. Make the smart phone a learning tool, not just for entertainment

udezeobumneme@gmail.com said...

100%.. See nothing wrong with that. All the parent Need to do is monitor them and ensure they use it positively.

Smart phones, and Electronic devices such as Video games, are like toys for children. And computer? Mama mia !
To me the chinese proverb said it all.

Anonymous said...

She is very correct

Unknown said...

She got it all right. Just let the children be but don't be over protective.

Unknown said...

it's not bad..buh there should be guard lines and restriction at certain levels..

Unknown said...

Personally, I don't think it's right, giving those devices to them. So that they will be able to think, reason and do their own stuff their self, atleast at there tender state. A Child should be treated like a child, if we must get the best out of them. We are in the world of technology and mothers still push to bring their babies into the world. Let's not let systems think or give them results, let allow them use their brains. Happy Sunday.

NSE, please everyone should take cue from Steve Jobs. He banned his own kids from using the IPad and other smart devices and preferred for them to read books and use regular computers for research. He understands how these devices can steal time and cause children to have attention deficit disorder. Let us be wise for our children's sake. Not every new technology should be automatically adopted. Please ask yourself how much time you spend on social media and how much value that has added to you. Successful people don't do that.

Unknown said...

I think it's Okey cos it adds to the child's learning n understanding things around them.

Smart phones ke? Play with my own but u ain't getting anything. I don't care if it is jet age or lightning age o. Haven't you heard the many stories of suicides due to cyber bullying? They can be creative even without smart phones. The people who are inventing things including the smart phones didn't have all the gadgets in the world growing up yet they are dtill creative enough to build the things we have now.
