Boat with 28 passengers capsize in Ikorodu, 8 dead

A ferry carrying 28 people last night around 8.30 capsized in a Lagoon in Majidun area of Ikorodu in Lagos, leaving 8 people dead, 12 rescued and 6 yet to be accounted for. Most of the occupants of the boat were working class people who were heading back home after the close of work.

The ferryboat which belong to Bell Marine Company began its journey from Ebute-Ero under the Eko Bridge around 6pm and headed for Ikorodu when it hit a rock and capsized.

Ibrahim Farinloye, Spokeperson for National Emergency Management Authority, Southwest Zone, confirmed the incident and said that NEMA officials and Naval Officers as well as local divers are patrolling the Lagoon to find the remaining six unaccounted occupants.

This incident is happening just two weeks after a boat capsized in Festac Town Lagos were 13 people reportedly died.

This is sad! To think that these guys have families waiting for their safe return. May their souls R.I.P. More safety measures should be put in place for those ferries.
Meanwhile, this is a time 2 call for more link roads to Ikorodu, it is speedily turning into a mega city and just one road in and out of ikorodu is not enuff! I think serious consideration should be given to the proposed 4th mainland bridge which will help help deconjest traffic and reduce d number of ferry passengers.

Hi, Linda. Its unfortunate that we live in a country of lazy reporters who instead of digging in and finding out the truth about a story, they would rather just listen to hearsay and publish rubbish. I am one of the survivors and would like to refute a couple of issues reported in our dailies.
- The boat was not overloaded as it was carrying the normal capacity of 22 people.
- The life jackets were actually new and not fake hence the survivors.
- The captain/boat driver was not overspeeding and reckless. He did not refuse to heed the calls of passengers to slow down as claimed.
- The incident happened at between 5.45pm and 6.30pm.
- Rescue was carried out by staff of Bell Marine Ltd owners of the capsized boat and a local fisherman who was first to arrive on the scene. Bell Marine sent four boats and they all arrived within 15 - 20mins after the boat went down.
- All govt agencies didnt arrive until hours later when all that could be rescued alive had been rescued by Bell Marine staff and the fisherman.
I thank God that I made it out and God comfort the families of the departed. God bless and preserve us all. Amen
