IG user reacts to Olori Wuraola's speech on Gender Equality

After Olori Wuraola's take on the Gender equality bill, she got some backlash and support from different people. Below is what Diary of a Naija girl thinks about it: Read her full post below:
Dear Olori, The reason you can hold a microphone and speak in public rather than at the backyard of the palace cooking jollof rice while your husband travels the world, is because of women like you who fought for us to live life and enjoy it equally like anyone else
.
Please see below a summary of what the fight for gender equality is about: ..
**If I work for 3 hours and a man works for 3 hours, we both deserve to get paid the same
**A woman can now decide that, Marriage shall mean Partnership, Friendship, companionship as well as Passion; not slavery
**I am not better, wiser, stronger, more intelligent, or more responsible than a man. Likewise, I am never less
**If a man’s virginity cannot be tested on the wedding night, mine shouldn’t be tested as well
**Because my husband has authority in my home does not make me inferior. We are both equal in essence and worth. Our responsibilities are just different
**It means that my character/behaviour is solely guided by my principles not by society’s expectation of how I “should” behave
**It means that I can wear a crown too! Ask Queen Elizabeth
.
Your Royal Highness, do not be deceived, your belief in this revolution has absolutely no bearing in its movement. Stand tall, behind the king, watch as more women understand this concept, watch as they break the glass ceiling, reaching straight for the moon… and beyond…in their Louboutins

There is a social caste women occupy...there is an order(which incidentally is also backed up by the injunctions in the Holy books)in which each gender has a distinct and important role.To seek to be equal to your husband means trying to upturn the balance when the Bible calls a person the 'head'.Feminists are just disturbed persons and probably insecure females too in my view

So long you are African there is nothing like gender equality. That's the african culture. Women are to respect and serve the men. Your fathers and great grandfathers went through all of this. Even proper Africans living abroad with their families follow the same tradition regardless of the belief in that country. You Africans are just copy cats that's your problem..always wana do whatever the westerners do!

When our father's and grandfather were enjoying all that, the women were basically housewives who just give birth to helpers in the name of children. Also the wealthy like Abraham in the Bible had servants. Men need to respect women as individuals and not slaves. After all some women are even the breadwinners. Funny enough it's broke guys that support this. When I was with my broke ex, he literally expected me to be his slave and also to have a 9 to 5 job. Now I'm with my rich boyfriend, I've never even cooked for him and he doesn't expect it as his mother did not do all those things while he was growing up. Do you think Aisha Buhari is a slave in their house? No! And also women should not be forced to respect men because they are the heads of the home, but to respect them because the are humans. With this attitude u'll see women respecting even themselves and other women. And it's the same broke ass men that will complain when their girlfriends(slaves) ask them for money for upkeep saying money is not everything, but a girl should be a slave to be a good wife material

paul imaji said...

@Stern culture is defined as the life and ways of a people. There is not like culture cannot change. As long as human beings are dynamic culture will be too. Therefore the way a people choose to and accept to live their lives becomes their culture. So because it was our " culture" we should continue to kill twins or force widows to drink "death bath water". As human knowledge advances our cultures must change to keep step because there is nothing like " permanent" culture.

I don't know if your senses are working properly but I doubt it. What does gender equality have to do with being African? Once also, women never used to work but now it's a norm. I'm sure someone like you would just be happy to have a slave as a wife then. A trophy wife if I may. Bruh, don't be backwards. This is progress we're talking about. The fact that girls can now dream and not be held back from it. That females now have a voice. Like Malala Yousafzai said, how do you expect a country to move forward when half the population is held back? People like you, who think that women are just here to serve men, are the plague. Hell, you're worse than the plague. Let's hope your own daughters weren't created to serve as sex toys and cooks. Receive sense.

While everyone's entitled to their opinion, I choose to disagree with yours. Do not generalize ALL Africans like this. Not everyone is like you. If you choose not to value women and treat them as equals fine, but do not say that is what ALL Africans think and how ALLL Africans behave.
For God's sake it is 2016! While some still live in the past and do what their forefathers did before them, some have EVOLVED and now know better and welcome their wives, mothers, and daughters as their equals. Evolving does not mean one is copying westerners! Once you become informed and know better, you WILL DO BETTER. Not everyone desires to remain ignorant. So do not generalize us!

This Olori woman. I didn't really expect her to be in support of gender equality. It's a shame that most ppl don't understand what it is. Regardless of what you're for or against, you should have in mind that we were all born flesh, with blood flowing through our veins, with same temperaments and emotions. Do men have different emotions than their female counterparts? NO. We are all the same even though we're different. The difference is only there for alliance not for superiority, not for slavery nor prejudice. Ppl are screaming culture. B4 culture moulded some ppl we were all human beings with same emotions, same thinking, same intelligence and same temperament. Pls we shud all fight for this course. I am a woman, I don't want to be superior, I don't want to rule, I don't want 2 be disrespectful but I want equality. Equality to lead and to be led. Thank you.

Besides, you should not be on Linda Ikeji´s blog...She is a woman too and should serving a man like you said. Back in the days, African culture did not know about the use of phones, please throw yours away. we should all get it straight....Gender equality and Gender roles are not and can NEVER be the same thing

When I was young, I use to like everything about the white man, now that have grown into a man, I now understand why our fore father made things the way the did in our culture. A society that does not respect he foundation will collapse.

If you leave many of these women, they will scrap the royal position that hold our society and say everyone is free, that is a woman for u, they fickle, this minute they r happy, the other minute they r not , you cannot leave society in their care.

One cannot look at this kind of issue from the religion point o view, not everyone is a Christian or muslim. But only from the law that guilds us all, which is Natural Law.

Naturally, men and women do not hav the same physical look, so Is in role and activities. Why look f equality, when the natural l already protects u, it is bcos u women r mixing the white man view that is cosing the high rate of women being single , over 30

Olori, spot on, we must fight this america freedomism out o our society, along wit dstv

Hi stern, it was African culture that twins be thrown into the evil forest(just because they are twins) but today many people pray to have twins. It was African tradition that husband's would eat out of a plate wives carried on their heads while dey ate. So on and so forth! Men are afraid of gender equity beCause their only achievement is "I am a man". Just know that, man or woman, human is human.

I don't know why women want this gender equality thing. Yes I agree I don't want to be stuck in the kitchen cooking or not be able to work but as a business owner, I'd never pay a man and a woman that does the same job the same salary. Most times, men can undertake more, they don't have cramps and slow down on their work load, they don't get pregnant or have to beg to pick their kids from school. If the roles were different and men went through all these "unforeseen circumstances" they'll be treated thus. Women have to get used to being women. Of course we are not inferior, God created us from Adam's rib for a purpose right? We deserve to be respected, treated fairly compared to the next person, even siblings are not loved equally by parents. Like someone said we are equal in the eyes of God because only He is capable of looking at all of us as equals, regardless of how rich/poor, fat/thin, short/tall, male/female

And so? Maybe the only thing the men had to offer was dick! And there is Ann Summer where you can buy dick and fingers from which works effectively. So any marry a dick with no value? Any other thing you want to say? My name is IE.....i'm an Ibadan geh

Mr stretch shut up! In my own company the only role they employ women are secretary. No consideration for female engineers . With a very large margin in salaries compared to our male counterparts. So we know what we are saying when we say we want equality.

Lol its funny how people have misguided understandings about this whole gender equality issue..

Nobody is saying as a woman I can lift an engine block because a man can.. or I can aim and pee straight standing up because a man can.. it's just that certain issues and circumstances like at the work place for example demand a certain amount of fairness towards both genders..

We all need each other in our homes and cultures and relationships because we are uniquely different and God made us that way to compliment each other.

The issue with how African men tend to misunderstand the concept of gender equality is that if some African men didn't see culture as a means of oppressing and enslaving women instead of protecting and treating them as queens in the first place, nobody will be complaining..
There are some well brought up African men who understand this role.. you can see that the Ooni took his wife out on the trip rather than subject her to the kitchen.

So until some men (and some extremist women) really understand what the actual concept of the fight for gender "equality" is really all about, we'll all still be having the same old silly arguments..

Nothing is different from male or female all are desame despite people see men more imp than man but me see women more important than men, when it comes to reality boy brings hardship when you put them to birth, but when you put a girl to birth finx move easily well than before, that is too say girls are brought in this world as a gift without them men are nothing I rest my case despite am a boy.. But all gender are equal.. Girls fight for your right

Abeg i dont need any man in my life to treat me like a slave in the kitchen. Technology has made it easy for women. I will just look for a sperm donor or buy sperm from sperm bank and have my kids through surrogate or IVF and train them myself. I can work and get a cook too. At least my children will not complain that i did not come home on time to cook for them. Also, they will take care of me when i am old. I really dont need a man and their wahala. Rubbish!

@STERN Since you want to remain backward with your forefathers' culture, you should have stayed back in the village and marry an illiterate village wife that will be serving you like a slave. Why did you run to Canada, a western country? Why did you learn English language? Why are you wearing western clothes? Why are you on this blog using western technology? Why do you have a phone? If you want to stick to your grandfather's culture, drop everything that has to do with the western culture. Dont pick only the western things that suits you and drop the ones that dont suit you. Drop all of them. So that we will know that you are a true African backward man. Ewu

@Anonymous 9:29PM and 10:21PM Since you want to remain backward and stick to the African culture put in place by man not God, why are you on this blog using phone and data which are technologies created by the white man? Why did you learn the western english language? Why didnt you remain an illiterate in your village? Instead of you to move forward with the western culture, you are moving backwards and want to drag women backwards with you. Bloody hypocrites!

I am 20 years old and i have experienced what this gender inequality is. A few years ago i applied for a job and i wasn't called back, it was weird. I confronted one of my friends working in the same company (not in the IT dept) she had confirmed from the IT department that i was qualified but i won't be employed because i am a female. It didn't make any sense because i had previously been employed in other companies.I was very upset but i took it as one of those things.
But now that we have a voice we can say something positive. We aren't going overboard and saying we won't take care of our spouse or our children wouldn't have training. From what i can tell many daughters take after their mothers if my child sees am responsible and following my dreams i am sure the world would be a better place.
Men coming here to say that its only single and divorced women that are supporting this. Your comments just look really sad to me , you are now assuming that marriage is the only beacon of happiness because if you aren't married you wont be happy or what is your point.
I also want to address men that are talking about culture. I bet you dont even know what culture is .Culture is a way of life, if you are educated you would have learnt that culture is a dynamic entity meaning its subject to change. Allowing women to have equal rights as you doesn't mean you are any less of a man, but you are better person for it because you are encouraging the world to be a better place. I am so happy because in have faith in the new generation that we would make this country a better place.

while I truly understand the plight of some women in Nigeria with issues like, being cheated by inlaws after a woman's husband dies but beyond that this whole Gender equality thing just does not make any sense. Tell me where in Nigeria a woman earns less than a man for the same job especially public offices. Where in Nigeria is a woman not allowed to drive. The issue of a man beating his wife has nothing to do with gender equality, beating someone is an ASSAULT and is punishable by law. The issue with that is that the law is not being enforced. I really need women to explain what exactly they mean or what rights exactly they are fighting for when they say Gender equality?
