Nigeria's first newspaper, Iwe-Irohin, resuscitated after 140 years

Nigeria's first Newspaper, Iwe Irohin, has been resuscitated after 140 years of its demise. The newspaper was founded in 1859 by a missionary named Henry Townsend in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Iwe Irohin was published bi-weekly in Yoruba and English language and ran for about 8 years before its demise in 1867. It's been brought back by the Nigerian Union of Journalists, who launched it's first edition just last week.

And your state is still radically underdeveloped environment wise. I school in Ogun state and it beats me how a place can be so impoverished and un-couth. Ogun state is only second to Oyo state when it comes to "Underdevelopment and unsanitary outlook". The hygene level in Ogun state is -30%, and yet they play home to the second richest LG (pardon me if my stats is wrong). I think all citizens of Ogun "ugly-looking" state should wear sack clothes and seat on ashes with earth on their heads, whilst fasting. Upon all the industries (commercial and educational), Ogun state still remains a subject of environmental sinister. I think the first solution to their problem is to change the name of the state from "Ogun" and educate the shallow minded hoodlums that gallivant the streets. God bless "Ogun" state, God bless y'all, God bless Nigeria.

Sorry, actually the most learned and educated yorubas are the ekitis/ondo. The most industrous yorubas and wildly travelled are the oguns. The most lazy yorubas who are danfo drivers, conductors, vulcanisers, meat sellers and agberos are from oyo state, osun state is the pride of yorubas because of ile-ofe. You cannot be more yoruba than an osun man! They carry their heritage wherever they go.... That's it!

You have a point but honestly ogun state might be the new lagos in some 10-15 years to come. Have u seen the way people are buying and building big structures. Starting from berger to oke-aro to ifo down to mowe , most of all this big industries are in ogun state wiv dangotes own being the bigest. That factory is like the whole of lagos island. its really spreading more than u know. Its just that development in naija is slow.

I'm really excited that this newspaper is being resuscitated. It was the newspaper that paved the way for development in the journalism industry, and I hope that with the proper running this time, it'll continue to be the pacemaker it once was. (From Caleb University, Imota, Lagos).

wow its been years since the paper has been seen or talked about. To see it come back to life is such a great news. I believe the paper will make a great impact on the locals that cant access the new technology of reading the news or knowing whats going on in their environment.

First published in November 23 1859,by Rev Henry Townsend. Five years before then, Rev Henry Townsend established a printing press and printing school in Abeokuta in 1854 where the printer in chief of Iwe Iroyin JAMES EDE schooled, lived, grew up and worked according to Rev Henry Townsend.
In 1866 Iwe Iroyin became bilingual which is one of the vision of Rev Henry Townsend who wanted the Egba people to always seek information by reading an also begot the habit of reading, With this vision/mission of Rev Henry Townsend, record had it that during this period at least three thousand CMS students to learned how to read, which affotiori made a par with completion to Rev Henry Townsend's objectives.
In 1867, Iwe Iroyin folded up, I drove in oblivion because of the cultural and political bally hoo and crisis amidst the Egba people and the European settlers.
It will be a remarkable resuscitation for Iwe Iroyin to having return after aeon of flat-line. If they unanimously work as a team in the media house, and falling for the shenanigan nature and d d the Nation the newspaper article rid again making sure they put in place all required resources for modern and publication.
