Building collapses in Lagos killing two sisters

A building located in Low Cost Housing Estate, otherwise called Jakande estate, in Oke-Ake-Afa, Isolo area of  Lagos, collapsed, yesterday, killing two graduate sisters.

The mother of the dead girls, identified as Mrs Coker, a widow, who was brought out of the debris alive was, however, in coma yesterday. Affected were flats 2, 4 and 6 of the six flat low-cost houses built over 30 years ago.

The building, Block M20, according to eye witnesses started showing cracks and sinking over a year ago. The tragic incident as gathered, occurred at about midnight causing  a deafening sound.

Vanguard gathered that while occupants in flats 2 and 4 managed to escape, those in flat 6 – Mrs Coker and her two children: Toyin, a graduate of the University of Lagos and her younger sister, Bukola, did not.

It was learnt that occupants of the collapsed building apparently ignored the warning signs of imminent danger which was evident since the past year. Tenants in flats two and six reportedly moved out some months ago, only for owner of flat two to lease the flat out to new occupants.

After the incident, youths in the area reportedly began a rescue mission. The body of Mrs Coker in her unconscious state was said to be the first to be brought out from the debris at about 3am and was immediately rushed to the estate health centre. Bukola’s body, in her night gown was reportedly brought out at about 5am, while that of  Toyin was brought out an hour later, stone dead. When Vanguard arrived the scene at about 8am, officials of NEMA and neighbourhood watch were sighted.

Fire fighting vehicles arrived later.

Dear Lagosians in particular, you know your houses were built even before you were born, you can see the iron bars, cracks, the cemented ceilings have given way, don't ignore these signs. I'm always scared whenever I am at a friends house.

I don't understand, the collapse of the building happened before 3am but the fire fighters arrived after 8am?

An inquiry needs to be made.

may the gentle souls of the departed rest in peace....amen.....and d govt had better do something to stop this ugly trend of buildings collapsing frequently. Penalties should be enforced on those who fault in erecting structures without undergoing the required process by the regulatory agencies>>Nigerians should also pay attention to some signs in their buildings, i saw a building the other day that was tilted to an angle and funny enough people were still in the building as you need no soothsayer to tell that building is imminent for collapse.....pls also get coren certified engineers to supervise building contracts...

May their Souls rest in peace. This estate is not far from mine and I must tell you that our Govt is giving out contracts to quacks. Even the one that was built in my estate around 2004 is already bent to the side. All these new estate building are Death Traps. Have seen those girls some couple of times and I pray GOD grants them rest.So Painful.

Their mum was told to move out about 20mins before the building collapsed but said "God will see us through till tomorrow". Now people should recognize when God is talking cos he won't come in his physical presence but send human's like ourselves to us. I pray the spirit to discern, may the LORD release on us in JESUS name. It is Well.

According to coal miners can make from $56,000-$104,
000 a year. The more vulnerable the global economy looks, the greater the demand
for gold and silver. This is still faster than dropping
your entire inventory.
