Senate orders FRSC to suspend issuance of new driver’s licences & number plates

The Nigerian Senate and House of Representatives yesterday directed the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to immediately suspend the implementation of the new driver's licence and vehicle number plates on the grounds that the innovation is creating further hardship for Nigerians.

God bless you NASS. What the heck do we need new vehicle number plates and driver's license for when the ones we got a few months back doesn't expire till 2014? Why the re-introduction of new plates that costs so much to get? Why can't they wait till 2014 when the one we are using now expires? This country sha!

FRSC is very funny. When an organization rolls out a new model of a thing which they want everyone to use. Those with the old model just bring the old one and exchange it. Only those who are getting it for the first time pay for it. That is what you see when there are new Naira notes. Old ones are exchanged. But FRSC has turned itself into a money making venture. What a shame.I really can’t understand why more than 140 million people are taken for a ride by a cabal of opportunists. Is it that poverty has driven the moral courage of average Nigerian that we can’t unite and come out in the streets?.where were this senate before now. How is it that the people’s right of existence is given them as a favor and these people have meted out poverty to the general public that we don’t have a choice but to accept any rubbish?. I applaud the senate without negating the fact that they all have hands in the demise of Nigeria as a nation. As far as am concern this is not a nation but a feudal estate where the privileged exact their power on the masses. But, one day is coming and that day is near when these men shall be the abhor of all Nigerian.

If you need another evidence that this nation is lawless, it is this. Making a change to a national entity without approvals from the necessary corridors as they say. All they did with this change is put a map of Nigeria (as if we don't know where the plates are coming from) and then the last 3 alphabets are switched with the first two and they call that new. There are articulated trucks on the road with bad tires, cars emitting enough smoke to kill a small elephant, drivers going about like mad men and not enough road education. The only thing they can think about is new number plates. How does that bring about safety to me while on Lagos roads filled with potholes and death traps?

Well the Morons in the NASS know the people are closing up on them. Very soon we would start going to their houses to deal with them.

Linda, licence tags do not expire, rather, its the Drivers' License (DL) that expire. I am of the opinion that upon the renewals of DLs by Nigerians let them issue the new licences and compel all of us to undergo the registration process. Same should apply to the licence plates, new car owners should register with the new formats.

Linda you talk as if everybody's licence would expire the same day, what happens between when your licence expires and mine that expired last month. They should just reduce the price that's all. Its a very good scheme. But I know they just want to make a lot of noise so they'll get a share of the pudding after all what has come out of the petroleum industry probe. Mtcheeew

I still feel the introduction is a novel idea that should be supported. We as Nigerians need to take into cognizance incidents of multiple suicide bombings that pervadeded the polity in recent time.

There should be a better approach to the idea rather than succumbing present users to the financial rigours obtaining new driving license and plate numbers, when my present driving is very much active.

I guess paying a token shouldn't be out of place or better still, follow same pattern adopted by the immigration service in phasing out old passport.

My 2 cent contribution.

Hey Linda, i guess this is the first good decision taken by the legislatures in this year 2012. For goodness sake, which one are we to focused on-fuel scarcity, new number plate, new driving licence or what to eat?

Useless Nass why didn't they stop them before they commenced d issuance.what would happen to the millions that have already purchased the license plate!

It took them this long, after enough money has been wasted and to realize fellow nigerians are being subjected under untold hardship gives me malaria.

It seems that FRSC is out of job or it is only trying to go commercial.
This not just happening, hope we all remember the days of compulsory reflective sticker for all cars even when all your break lights are in perfect working condition.
For God's sake let us ask ourselves: How old is this so called ' old number plates'? The first time they change to the so called old plate we were told it was 'computer plate number' that will carry the car owners' information. Few months later came another business venture for FRSC: the compulsory ENCODING the story as usual it will also carry car owners' information.
For God's sake, from reflective stickers to the new drivers license number plates, ARE THEY REALLY NECESSARY ?Hardship! Hardship!! Hardship!!! On Nigerians.
Enough is enough, VIO, FRSC pleas get job
