The 9th Earl of Bathurst & the Nigerian State- By Femi Fani Kayode

In an article he released yesterday, former Nigerian Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, said Nigeria has been destined to fail since its creation by the British in 1914. He said the British created Nigeria in a way that would allow the ‘poor North’ to continue to rule the country while the ‘rich South’ will remain oppressed. Read it after the cut...

Allen Christopher Bertram Bathurst, the 9th Earl of Bathurst is a British peer whose other title is Lord Apsley. He and I were colleagues at Harrow School, the best private school in the United Kingdom, 30 years ago. In 1985 he said the following: ‘’Nigeria is a toilet of a country where evil reigns’’.

I have never forgotten his insulting remarks. I found it intriguing that this quintessential member of the English upper class had the nerve to say such things to me about my country.

My response to him was equally graphic and frank. I told him that Nigeria was not a ‘’toilet of a country’’ but that if he insisted on his insolent characterization then it was a ‘’toilet’’ that was established by  non-other than his British forefathers who defecated in it and left a horrible mess before departing from our shores. He found my response most disconcerting and we almost came to blows.

Yet I look at what has happened to us in the last 54 years of our existence as an independent nation and what we have suffered in the last 100 years since the 1914 amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates and I really do wonder.

If the truth must be told, things have not gone too well for us. I was born in the same year as we gained our independence and as I ponder and reflect on the last 54 years all I see is violence, bloodshed, dashed hopes, lost opportunities and shattered dreams. I see a brutal civil war in which two million people died.

I see a string of violent military coups and repressive military dictatorships and I see suspicion and division between the peoples of the north and the south. I see dangerous tensions between the numerous ethnic nationalities, continuous strife and sectarian violence. I see bombings, the slaughter of the innocents, Islamic fundamentalist rebellions, battle-ready ethnic militias and bloodthirsty local war lords.

I see economic degradation, decaying infrastructures, environmental disasters and untold suffering and hardship. And finally I see poverty and unemployment, poor quality leadership and a dysfunctional semi-failed state which is still struggling to find its true identity.

On October 1st every year we make nostalgic and inspirational speeches about the ‘’labors of our heroes past’’ and congratulate one another on our independence. Yet we refuse to sit back in deep reflection, take stock of what has really been going on and carry out an honest and candid appraisal of our situation.

We are not ‘’a toilet of a country where evil reigns’’ but we must admit that we are in a mess. And the question is why are we in such a mess, how did we get there, why have we not been able to get out of it in 52 years and what role did our former colonial masters play in creating and sustaining that mess.

If we want to answer these questions we must go back to the beginning. The problem is that the British established a faulty foundation for Nigeria right from the start which they knew could not produce anything wholesome. The Nigeria that they handed over to us in 1960 was nothing but an unworkable artificial state and a “poisoned chalice”. It was destined to fail right from the outset.

Worse still they handed us that poisoned chalice with a malicious and mischievous intent and without any recourse to our people in terms of any form of a national referendum. The British did the same thing in varying degrees when they left virtually each and every one of their other ‘’third world’’ colonies. The most obvious cases however were Nigeria, the Sudan, India and the nation that was formerly known as Malaya.

Every single one of these four countries had monumental problems with sustaining their unity after independence and all of them, with the exception of Nigeria, were compelled to break up into smaller entities before they could bring out the best in themselves as a people and fully exercise their human potentials.

Consequently India broke up into three and became India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, the Sudan broke into two and became Southern Sudan and the Sudan and Malaya broke into two and became Malaysia and Singapore. Nigeria is yet to find the courage and fortitude to go that far and whether we will eventually break up or not remains to be seen.

Yet the truth is that when you force two incompatibles with completely different world views together into an unhappy marriage, lock the gates of the house, throw away the keys and bestow leadership upon a “poor husband” to rule over a ‘’rich wife’’ in perpetuity, you are looking for trouble.

The result of the amalgamation was therefore predictable. It was either that the “poor husband” (the north) would fully subjugate and eventually kill the “rich wife”(the south) or the “rich wife” would fully subjugate and eventually kill the “poor husband”. And we are right in the middle of that struggle for mutual subjugation till today.

In 1960 the British ensured that power was handed over to the most pliable region at the Federal level by establishing an alliance with the northern traditional institutions and political ruling elite and fixing the census figures in their favor.

Consequently by 1960 we had a situation where the well-educated, enlightened, progressive and predominantly Christian south was played out through intrigue, deceit and fixed census figures and instead power was given to a fatalistic and ultra-conservative Muslim north who were prepared to do anything the British wanted them to do, who had already overwhelmed and suppressed their own ethnic and Christian minority groups and whose major preoccupation was to dominate and control the entire federation, to keep the south out of power and to “dip the Koran in the Atlantic ocean”. It did not stop there.

Even after the British left in 1960 they continued to meddle in our affairs and they encouraged, sponsored and supported a string of repressive military regimes, all of which derived their power from a northern-controlled army officers corps whose retired generals are the ones that determine who will be what in our country. That is our story.

Some have argued that despite the ignoble intentions of the British we ought to have been able to sort out our own problems 54 years after they left us. This is a good point. It does however betray a tinge of naivety and a lack of appreciation of just how chronic those problems were right from the start and just how malevolent a hand the British dealt us.

I say this because the bitter truth is that the system in Nigeria cannot be changed simply because the forces that have controlled our country since 1960 are deeply conservative and the foundation and the structure upon which she has been established has been designed in such a way that makes radical and fundamental change impossible.

Some have compared Nigeria to a badly wounded leg which can only be healed through restructuring.  It follows that the only way real change can come is if the country is restructured and power is devolved from the center.

Unfortunately the Nigerian people do not seem to be minded to effect this option anytime soon. They seem to have lost their will to resist inequity, tyranny and injustice, to insist on determining their own fate and to fight for their own future.

The relevance of the British today is that they are not only the architects of this monumental monstrosity but they are also the ones that have continued to encourage and support the ruling elite that runs and sustains it.

If they were being fair to us they would have been amongst those that have been encouraging the idea of restructuring our country, devolving power from the center and effecting a fundamental and radical change in our attitudes and affairs.

That is precisely what they are doing in the United Kingdom itself today where power is being systematically and gradually devolved from the center at Westminster in England to the hitherto suppressed and occupied regions of Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

This is good enough for them yet our erstwhile colonial masters have never supported a similar course of action for us. It is for this reason that we can blame the forefathers of the 9 th Earl of Bathurst almost as much as we can blame ourselves for the mess that our country is in up until today.

U wonder wat he stands for. To me he is a joker in the park. ... With his intelligence he suppose to be among the ppl nigerian would look up to when it comes to leadership bt apparently he is a worse kind of guy to trust in a position of authority. Sorry to say these about him bt ppl don't change they get worst, I mean ppl of that kind. Wish him well though.

In 2065, fifty years away, the Igbo people and the rest of the world will be making final preparations to commemorate a century of the Igbo genocide. This will take place on 29 May 2066.

Barbarism, Pestilence

It should be recalled that on that dreadful mid-morning of Sunday 29 May 1966 and through the course of 44 subsequent months of indescribable barbarity and carnage not seen in Africa since the German-perpetration of the genocide against the Herero, Nama and Berg Damara peoples of Namibia in the early 1900s, the composite institutions of the Nigeria state, civilian and military, embarked on the murder of Igbo people. 3.1 million Igbo or one-quarter of this nation’s population were murdered during the genocide.

The Igbo genocide is the foundational genocide of post-(European)conquest Africa. It inaugurated Africa’s current age of pestilence. Singularly and quite dramatically, the genocide shattered the capacity of this post-conquest state to capitalise on the vast invaluable resources of multinationality and multiculturality emplaced at such a critical phase to engineer a determined reconstructionary and redevelopment programme of the country after the devastation of 60 years of the British occupation.

Constitutive indices

To understand the politics of the Igbo genocide and the politics of the “post”-Igbo genocide is to have an invaluable insight into the salient features and constitutive indices of politics across Africa in the past 50 years. Africans elsewhere remained largely silent on the gruesome events in Nigeria but did not foresee the grave consequences of such indifference as subsequent genocides in Rwanda, Darfur, Nuba Mountains, South Kordofan (latter three in the Sudan) and Zaïre/Democratic Republic of the Congo, and in other wars and conflicts in every geographical region of Africa, during the period, have demonstrated catastrophically: Liberia, Mali, Libya, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Algeria, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, southern Guinea, the Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda, Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Central African Republic, Nigeria (Boko Haram insurgency in north, northcentral regions). The haunting killing fields have indeed stretched, almost inexorably, from Igboland to the rest of Africa…

Just as the Nigerian operatives of mass murder appeared to have got away without censure from the rest of Africa, other genocidal and brutal African regimes soon followed in Nigeria’s footpath, murdering a horrifically additional tally of 12 million people in their countries considered “undesirables” or “opponents” since the Igbo genocide in January 1970. These 12 million murdered in the latter bloodbaths would probably have been saved if Africans and the rest of the world had intervened, robustly, to stop the initial genocide against the Igbo people. Surely, the world could have stopped this genocide; the world should have stopped this genocide.

Bane of existence

Forty-nine years and 15 million murders on, Africans now realise, finally, that there cannot be any meaningful advancement in their fortunes without abandoning this post-(European)conquest state, this “Berlin-state”, essentially a genocide-state. This state is the bane of African existence and progress. Yet, thankfully, just as in Berlin, in November 1884-February 1885, when conquering Europeans drafted their gruesome charter for the occupation of Africa, states are not a gift from the gods but relationships painstakingly formulated and constructed by a discernible group of human beings that inhabit an ascertainable geo-historical territorial expanse on earth to pursue worldviews and interests envisioned and articulated by these same human beings. The state, any state, therefore, is transient; in contrast, human beings, people(s), endure

It is its inalienable right (http://re-thinkingafrica.blogspot.co.uk/2012/01/rights-for-scots-rights-for-igbo.html, accessed 10 September 2015). It does not therefore have to explain to anyone else why it has embarked on this track of freedom. It can now decide what precepts, what aspirations, what trajectory, what goals, it has set its new state to embark upon. As Césaire deftly puts it in the interview referred to, the challenges of the times become the “quest to reconquer something, our name (sic), our country … ourselves” (2008: 2).

Anonymous said...

Let freedom ring!
Thus, the pressing point to reiterate here is that the immediate emergency that threatens the very survival of African peoples is the enthralling “Berlin-state” edifice entombed in African existence to serve the strategic interests of its European World creator in perpetuity coupled with the pathetic bunch that masquerades here and there as African leaderships but whose mission is to oversee the pervasive manifestation that signposts contemporary Africa.

African women and men will sooner, now, rather than later, abandon this fractured, fracturing, conflictive, alienating and terror contraption. Africans must now focus on real transformation – the revitalisation and consolidation of the institutions of Africa’s constituent nations and polities, or what Okwuonicha Nzegwu has described, succinctly, as the “indigenous spaces of real Africa” (Nzegwu, Love, Motherhood and the African Heritage, 2001: 41). In these institutions and spaces of African civilisation lie the organic framework to ensure transparency, probity, accountability, investment in people, humanised wealth creation, respect for human rights and civil liberties, and a true commitment to radically transform African existence.

The future for the constituent nations and peoples of Africa couldn’t be more reassuring on the morrow of that which, since 1 January 1956, has been classified as the post-(European)conquest “Berlin-state” or genocide-state of Africa. All successor states, organically constituted, really have their work cut out. Their mission is not to begin to construct states that are merely post-genocide or post post-conquest/post post-“colonial” states (cancelling out, in some mechanical venture, that which was “Berlin-state” Africa here and there!) but a realisation, a reclamation of that which makes us all human and part of humanity.

The new states have an opportunity to begin to build a new civilisation where human life, fundamentally, is sacrosanct. This is an inclusive state where women and men live as co-operators and co-creators in fundamentally transforming their society. This is a state that accepts and accords full rights to all minority groups. This is a state where people enjoy the rights to differ and to dream dreams and dream different sets of dreams as they choose. This is a state dedicated to furthering and nurturing the resilience of its people and to enabling them pursue their highest creative endeavours. This state continuously strives to remove all limitations in the paths of its people and committed to making life better and better and better. This is a state that primes its people to flourish.

Finally, the long drawn out nightmare of nearly 200 years, since November 1884- February 1885, is over and truly Africans do stand poised on the eve of a new beginning. Long Live the republic of Biafra

All you have said is true and cannot be disputed by any honest student of the situation in Nigeria. But the Igbos once said no to this and rest of the country yes to the domination. They still said yes, in the last election. If the Yorubas have now come to the same point and they can sincerely say no,then the end is in sight. The Igbos have always been ready.

ffk should tell us what we need to know not what he wants us to hear. You are talking about the enemity the the Britons had created among the nothern part of Nigeria and the south, the truth remains that the so called colonial masters then were although interested in dominating our nation but also contributed to our enlightment. I wonder what you are driving at in this post, for us to disintegrate like other afforementioned countries such as india, malaya and sudan? Is that the proffered solution here? For our country's sake there are other methods in which we can rebuild the not so solid foundation like you have said. I strongly disagree with your opinion here, because clearly it is for your own selfish political interest. You as a one-time minister of this nation what have you contributed other than to take orders from frontliners to tonguelash other politicians who have good intentions for the country's sake, am not so surprised cos that is he reason why obj brought you from the UK. Thus my point here, you as a politically inclined individual and an intellect personality should surmon the courage with the likes of others to join force and lets make our country a source of envy to other countries mostly west African and strategically analyse what the past leaders since independence have contributed, the strengths, weaknesses and threat of governance since 1960. You want real change and progressiveness and yet you cant export our customs qnd traditions. Real change starts when your children starts schooling here in our country, when we are more concerned and interested in good governance rather than seeing political seats as a place to acquire wealth. Ffk no we wont disintegrate we shall stand strong in unity and pledge for the wellbeing of our great nation for the sake of posterity. Using the Britons as an excuse wont solve our problem rather we should be more interested in shunning corruption and embrace the real meaning of democracy.

It is easy to look at Mr Fani-Kayode and call him a conspiracy theorist. But the real question you should ask yourself is this, are the majority always right or wrong in their collective opinions? You first have to leave room for doubt what you have been taught in schools ad what you watch on t.v or read on blogs and listen to your inner reason through prayers.

It is a fact that there was a conspiracy among colonial governments to give certain african countries self government before they were ready for it. This was just one leg of the plan to cripple the entire African population by destroying their economies through wars, debts and unemployment.

At the risk of sounding tribalistic, the docile nature of the Hausa has always made him an attractive tool to the British in achieving this objective. They use such tools to ensure that their interests in Nigeria are protected while the Southerners (being the owners of these interests and who never legall gave them away) are FOREVER subjugated by the Northerners who act as merceneries. If you research Mr Fani- Kayode's arguments closer you will find all this to be true.

MAKE NO MISTAKE NIGERIA IS SUFFERING FROM TRAUMATIC NEO-COLONIALISM. THE ONLY WAY OUT IS TO EMBRACE YOUR RIGHT TO SELF DETERMINATION. NIGERIA MUST HOLD A REFERENDUM

Unknown said...

i swear to GOD,this is deep sense, and the pure truth
i think the south should seceed from the north already, the poor tribalistic north just dont have life in them, after the south secced by forming an alliance of the east and west, then wecan decide if we want to stay a country or go our separate ways.

Anonymous said...

His analysis is spot on. This guy is an intelligent guy. The break up of Nigeria is inevitable either now or in the future because of incompatibility. We are only just fooling our selves because
suppression of any region of this country would
spell doom for the country. The only reason we are still together is because of the experience of war the SE experienced several years ago and their determination not to have a repeat of it. I believe that any seperation would be through a peaceful secession.

Unknown said...

Thank you so much Mr Femi Fani Olukanyioda for your brilliant information and sincere contributions to see that Nigeria is better for the good of majority of this nation as it will be noted that the wedding of Nigeria by British is fought by various standard. As it goes against the four foundation a true nation of ours stand on which is Equity Unity Justice and Peace for this very reason I agree with you that is better to restructure or go our separate ways as a people either true referendum or through violence. When the purpose of marriage 💑 cannot be obtain then divorce is inevitable. By what has been happening now is so clear that Nigeria can not continue as a Nation because if the elder of the North protectorate can come out to say the Confab of the previous administration does not favour them there for is unacceptable then we have a problem at our hands. Because this Confab was a co censor reach by the whole country various government arms with all regions sending is delegates. To first represents their interest and secondly their contributions. Why rejecting it now please before you comment think well pleased God bless you all

When he said 'poor' north, I am sure he didn't mean lack of money. He meant 'mentally poor' because that is what most of them are.

But I don't think that the problem here is which tribe rules. (Though I am not surprised because FFk's articles is never complete till there is an ethnic undertone)
The problem however is that we need to go our separate ways.
This marriage called Nigeria is not working. But then, we are are scared of separating to avoid more bloodshed.

The Nigeria project was an experiment which should have ended in 2014, but instead of doing the right thing, Jonathan diverted the attention of the National Confarb, which should have suggested ways of easy breakup.

The agreement was that the project Nigeria will be on trial for 100years, after which the stakeholders will come together to decide if they are to continue living together as one or not.

Well is evident that Nigeria is in a state of gun powder very soon it will explode in our face. Thanks Mr. Femi Fani Olukayoda at this point the people of the south need brilliant information as this because the marriage call Nigeria is faulty in all grounds because is built on deception I don't see any reason under heaven why power will be given to someone who doesn't have the resources to decide what resources of some one else should be used for. My reason is simple first the foundation that holds true nation as ours is broken which is Unity Justice Peace and Equity is defeated. Unity is one big mirage in this nation because we all speak different languages. Different religions. Different cultures. Lacks of respect for each others ideas and beliefs. there is no unity as the reason we are together is the resources from the south. That is parasitic relationship that blows no regions good winds as the true potential of the various segment is not achieved. Then again recently some elder from the north protectorate came in to reject Confab that caused Nigeria alot of resources in terms of cash time and human resource this Confab represents the interest of all regions as each send the delegates to make input on it they agreed after decision has be reach they turn back to reject the national documents of 2014.because some of the section does not favour them. That is injustice because it was not one section that form Nigeria. And subsequently requesting for another confab this is a waste of our resources. They should always be reminded that this country belongs to all of us and therefore all the regions most be carefully sense fully carry along. Rejecting that confab reports is also rejecting the Nigeria constitution past to us by the Northerner lead military you known what that means. Is simple lawless nation were is free for all therefore referendum for freedom become inevitable because pharaoh most let us go.

When this finishes smoking his weed; he conjures up from the evil machinations of his mind ways to seek relevance by inciting wicked emotions in people who care to take him seriously.

The British have done their part. In 54 years, I feel it's stupidity that would make anyone blame them. They came, opened our eyes to modernization and left. We are what is wrong with Nigeria. We the people. We are the power hungry ones, the selfish ones, the 'always right' ones. What happened to 'love your neighbor as yourself'? What happened to 'do to others what you want done to you'? We Nigerians have to want the same thing; the good and growth of the nation. It's not tribe, power, education, etc. What do Nigerians want? Where do we want to be as a nation in 5 years? It's time we stop blaming others and own our mistakes and selfishness Femi Fani-Kayode

FFK as much as I'm not ur fan, ur article is on point. But just that no sane person should take the Yorubas seriously on breaking up because tomorrow nah, they will change mouth. But it wil happen, coz it seems inevitable but into three, the west will be one country. I suggest you invest the time you use in writing up all this into thinking of a wonderful name for your country. So oga FFK SEEN
