Buhari cancels visit to Cross River for groundbreaking of 260km highway

According to a NAN report, the proposed visit of President Buhari to Cross River State for the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a 260km superhighway has been cancelled. A statement by Christian Ita, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River, on Thursday, confirmed the cancellation.

It stated that the decision to postpone the ceremony was communicated to the governor in a letter signed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari.

“The presidency attributed the shift to a letter written to the president by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, Nana Fatima Mede. “She claimed that the proposed highway, if allowed to go on, would cut through the Cross River National Park. “The letter claimed that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) on the proposed road was yet to be carried out,” the statement said.
But Mr. Ita stated that the proposed road would not traverse the Cross River National Park, as the superhighway would be several kilometres away from the national park.
“Based on the input of the Cross River National Park, the road has since been re-routed with the alignment now several kilometers away from the park. “As a governor who is passionate about the preservation of the state’s biodiversity with his establishment of the Green Police, he would not embark on a project that would undermine the environment,” Mr. Ita stated.
He said the EIA report on the road was being handled by environmental consultants, PGM (Nig) Limited recommended to the state by the Federal Ministry of Environment. Mr. Ita said the governor would work closely with the presidency to clear areas of doubt, adding that a new date for the ceremony would be announced later.

Am in calabar and will say most of us still dnt understand d visions n missions of our governor

Why on earth will he embark on d construction of a whole new road jst bcos u want history to always call u da man who created a super highway instead of maintaining the one we already have

The project is not viable, I dnt knw hw dat is going to change anything for d better
He is borrowing a whole lot of money to get this done

As a professor I really expected more from him

Nawao! this is a major goof, how come the state government wasn't communicating effectively with the ministry of environment, I hope their positions get harmonised and the president visits cross river to flag off the project.

Why should work commence on the road if the EIA has not been carried out? Why the rush? Someone should tell the governor that the era of CHANGE is here.

Ben Ayade with initial Gra Gra May God direct you aright to avoid future mistakes

Unknown said...

Whatever that is... Next plzzz!

What do you expect from a Daura cow rearing, cow thinking presidents behaviour towards a 5% percentile??? Anything nice for the five percentile repulses him. I don't even know why Ayade decided to go for that road that is seldomly plied when there are more frequently plied road connecting Akwaibom, Abia and Ebonyi that pleads for immediate attention!

Why didn't they bfo the assessments before now. After the citizens have prepared to welcome the president and this type of inexcusable reason is now cropping up. I heard it on the national television that the president will be visiting down south. We all said alleluia o.

D tribalism dis man is showing keeps increasing by the day.since he won d election has he visited the south south or south east?

Dint u read the part where I said he should maintain d one we already have.

One of the main reasons calabar is considered save, its cos it has a major one entry and exit route, why risk our security at this terrorist driven moment. Creating a new road doesn't mean u r successful. If he wants to be talked about like akpabio of akwa ibom, let him take care of d ikom-ogoja road

Hmmmmm.
Good for him and I wish him all d best.

Good governance @ PMB .The cross river governor should know that EIA is an integral part of a construction of that magnitude. PMB respects the law and he knows his onions.

Shame on all the people here reading tribal or sectional reasons behind the postponement. I know for a fact that the design of the so-called superhighway is not even ready! Who does a thing like that?!! I pity cross riverians sha they are in for a tough thing with this their gra gra governor.

APC lapdog, come on run along. Dont you think sometimes it will do your image good to keep quiet. You are beginning to sound like a fool.

Please shut up! Have you ever been to cross river? The ministry of environment thinks cross river is a garden, that should remain undeveloped. From constant refusal to allow state resources to be mined to this.....

Anonymous said...

Christabel thank you! Tell that little child to keep shut.bia mangolipx, do you want the gov to continue patching the highway? All federal roads in the state have been neglected right from 1999. The superhighway is supposed to act as evacuation corridor for the deep seaport, yet again it seems there is a grand conspiracy against the progress of cross riverians, what the min of Environment is doing is not diff from what the national boundary commission did, they simply stay in abj and withdrew the map of the state giving the oil wells to akwa ibom without setting a single boot on ground.
