Nigeria faces cash crunch - Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

In an interview with CNN's Richard Quest, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said this will be a difficult year for Nigeria financially because of the cash crunch we are experiencing, but said with the financial assets the current administration has been able to build over the years, our cash flow will improve over time.
"Under this administration we began the work of truly diversifying the economy and the proof of that is that much of the growth in this past few years that has come to the country has come not from the oil sector but actually from non-oil sectors like Agriculture, telecommunications, manufacturing, the creative industries. The fact that oil prices fell by 50% makes it very difficult in terms of cash flow but Nigeria is asset rich and that is why when people say the country is broke I say no. In economic terms, with the kind of assets we have we should be able to realize some of them to improve our cash flow but it is true that this will be a very difficult year because of the cash crunch. However we need to see this drop in oil prices as an opportunity. I gave a talk on Nigeria beyond oil. I really think with the growth of the country based on non-oil sectors, we ought to see the fall in oil prices as an opportunity to further the diversification that has started under this administration" she said

Diversification indeed. Anyway one of the diversified sources of our revenue is Diezani. Heard that she coughed out 300 million dollars recently.

Mrs Iweala, you are a great economic mind. You can spin this whichever way you want. When there's no money in the coffer, this fact remains the fact. National treasury has been depleted. Now, we can argue whether this depletion is through corruption, graft and theft. You talk about asset, that is not visible to Nigerians. Is this some game of abracadabra. I don't know how you can make me believe want you cannot prove. I hope there's some kind of accountability for looting the treasury dry.

Remaining you, okonjo iweala to seek Asylum in other country when d new administration begins in earnest, since a mother who have children could be this wicked by conniving to steal public fund, you will soon face the wrath. Why did leave world bank to take up ministerial work, co-ordinating minister my foot.

Very simplistic answers you'll expect.
Afterall, we have so many kids on the internet.

People can't talk without rage and dooling out baseless accusations.

The govt has failed but mostly in education because what we are producing well in this country seems to be a remarkable number of illiterates and glorified semi literate people.

Don't listen to wise and informed speech to help you understand what aspect of the economy to invest in and how to plan your company's cash books, keep accusing and making noise.

Okonjo is a learned woman. A juggernaut. Her CV has lips, it speaks. After this administration, she will return to the IMF to continue her career while you languish on blogs insulting a woman none of your mothers can lace her boots abi na tie her wrapper.

Everything is left for time to tell. You guys surely lack knowledge if you think Buhari will drag people out of their houses to court, to prosecute them. Or no, he will lead them straight to prison witgout trials. Do you know how much time, energy it takes to prosecute financial crimes. So much auditing and inquiries. Do you think you can try someone for a crime without evidence?
Rather, they will sue the government and collect heavy damages. Ask Aminu Ogwuishi.
Linda, you should not give illiterate truant students and market men a platform to spill their bin. Edit comments.

Both the writer and Victoria are the illiterates here and it is that illiteracy that makes u comfortable with incompetence... does a CV stop u from being a thief? or we can't be outraged by blatant mismanagement again? Nelson Mandela, martin Luther King and even Jesus christ all expressed their anger through different platforms which is what those esteemed libers were doing and even if u question their choice of words u failed to realize that u were doing the exact same thing! I think ify is right u must be related to Mrs iweala if not ur education is just a terrible embarrassment and a "glorified" waste of money. Thanks

Anonymous said...

Half on the people on this blog site a talking rubbish. I now see why students are doing so badly in WAEC and JAMB. Simple macro economics cannot be understood. That is why the electorate don't demandfor manifesto or policies of a party but instead vote for individuals that make the loudest noise and criticize the most. A BIG FAT SHAME !!!. Our country would move forward if the electorate especially the younger ones become more educated and less hungry. I bet most of you on this blog are not thinking of how you can key in and make money based on the policies the new administration have been revealing over the past couple of days instead you will come on the blog site and insult somebody that has more sense than all of you combined together times 2. If you don't have the brain power to key in, you will still remain jobless in the new dispensation.

Anonymous said...

Madam I used to respect you but for the past 2yrs you have disappointed Nigerians for joining them to loot our money God knows all human hidden agenda. The end shall tell

CMS said...

Dem no know before abi?

They had to wait for the fall in oil prices before realising.

Before the oil era, what were we sustaining Nigeria with?

What was the currency of the Naira then?

But because of quick money and corruption they abandoned the natural resources God blessed Nigeria with.

How can a country this rich with resources be suffering like this?

It's very sad but I believe things will get better but the betterment of the country depends on you and me and how we play our parts in developing the country.

Anonymous said...

I reiterate my words.
You are illiterates, jesters at best...
I'm not related to Okonjo
But we in the international community understand her influence and brilliance.
The poor woman stunted the growth of her career by staying in Nigeria to become a local minister.
You think if someone like that stole, she'll leave the trace for you woodpeckers to detect. Like I said, you people know nothing about finance and how things are done. Education is key.
Stop sitting on blogs to cast aspersions on superior people. Register for courses and stop this cacophony. Help our country.

I'm a Nigerian and American lawyer. I specialise in commercial and company practice. I'm acquainted with financial crimes prosecution too. You people are really very shallow. Linda, I rarely comment but you're doing a disservice to your blog by letting these uninformed and dense students take the day. Open your eyes.

Damochedxb said...

Shut up idiot anonymous literate, harvard graduate Mr Lawyer and whatever damn title you wanna add. You are definitely related to Mrs Okonjo Iweala. All you have succeeded in saying is that your mother or aunt or relative is a thief but because she and your family members are well learned, y'all can steal our money without a trace and theirs nothing we can do about it. But that's where you are wrong. You are just here typing irrelevant grammar. Your mom/Aunty/relative or sugar mommy is a thief and she will surely pay for all stealing she has supervised. If she's not responsible for the cash crunch, either by being part of the looters or turning a blind eye to the milking, then educate us.
