Chimamanda Adichie - one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in the World

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been selected as one of TIME magazine’s 2015 100 Most Influential People in the World. Her selection was based on her unique position as a literary success and an influential cultural voice.

Adichie studied political science at Eastern Connecticut State University, and has a Masters degree in writing from Johns Hopkins University and a Masters degree in African Studies from Yale. She has held fellowships at Princeton-where she taught a writing course-and Harvard.

She is the first Nigerian recipient of numerous prestigious literary awards including the Orange prize, the National Book Critics Circle award, the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize and the Nonino Prize for fiction. She has, most recently, been shortlisted for the Dublin IMPAC prize, the most lucrative literary award in the world.

In addition, she was listed as one of the top twenty fiction writers under the age of forty by The New Yorker magazine.

She has been awarded a Macarthur Fellowship, popularly known as the Macarthur ‘Genius’ Award.

Adichie has also been honoured by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the ‘Global Ambassador’ award.

Her first TED talk, THE DANGER OF A SINGLE STORY, is one of the most-watched TED talks and is a staple of school courses all over the world. Her second TED talk, WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS, has been a major influence in the ongoing worldwide resurgence of feminism, and inspired Beyonce’s popular anthem FLAWLESS.

Her books have been translated into more than thirty languages and have sold over a million copies worldwide. The film adaptation of her most recent novel AMERICANAH will be co-produced by Brad Pitt and Lupita Nyong’o.

She lives in Lagos, where she organizes an annual creative writing workshop.

Other Nigerians on the TIME 100 list are activist Obiageli Ezekwesili, president-elect Muhammadu Buhari and artist Chris Ofili.

Linda, have you ever met Chimamanda? If you've ever read Americanah and seen/heard her talk about the blogger main character, I think she implies she bases Ifemelu on you. She doesn't say where life and creative license converge though. Care to clarify? Hehe.

Congrats to Chimamanda. It's well deserved. Congrats goes out also to our president-elect GMB for making the list as well. Hmm, I wonder why our "smiling hero" GEJ doesn't feature on the list. Guess he's not relevant or maybe he's been shortlisted for the Nobel Peace prize instead :-)

Nice one. She deserves it. Though I'm not trilled by all of her kind of influence . She sometimes says the darnest things. However, I like her resolve to speak for what she believes whether we approve or not.
I guess they all have Omotola to thank for opening up this avenue to Nigerians. Abeg let me go fave my work , who knows me too I might be included one day.

Unknown said...

Congrats to her..

Chinonye,With your type of written English?I doubt.

Unknown said...

Awesome! Congrats Chimamanda Adichie. You deserve it big time. You make us proud.

Anonymous said...

Congratulations to her. You are really making Nigerians proud except for the tribalistic, selfish and one-sided article you wrote in support of your people in response to the obviously tribalistic comment made by Oba of Lagos which makes you petty attention seeking Tribalistic as most Nigerians. Anyways, enjoy your award

If this is true,it buttresses something that always bothers me.

Why don't people add the Nigerian universities they attended to their profiles especially if they have gone on to other schools even if its a low grade school outside the country.UNN is(was) a solid school like most federal universities back then.

I'd still prefer to employ a unilag/ife/ui/unn graduate over a private university one.(if the federal universities are still what they were some years ago)Yet we earn from this same system that we refuse to be proud of.its well

Congrats to her!

When you read profiles like this and compare them with growing up in nsukka, it speaks volume of potential possibilities and personalities. Where you are shouldn't stop you from getting to your dream. Look for what you love enjoy it. She dropped out of pharmacy went for literature her true love that love has made her a celebrity.

The first person who said 'not a fan', is an absolute moron. Not a fan, but u hurried to comment, why not crawl into your pit and stay there. Jealous loser.

Anyway, we should give honour where due, and Chimamanda is simply amazing... I would absolutely love to meet her one day, she's the epitome of all it means to be a young Nigerian woman, going out there and doing it right, with honour and integrity. God bless her forever..

Unknown said...
