If Cheryl had told Bernard that her birthday fell on the 14th of the month, then he could not have worked out the date at this stage.

However, as he states that he now knows the date, we can rule out July 14 or August 14.

This leaves just three dates to chose from - July 16, Aug 15 and Aug 17.

Following Bernard's statement, Albert is then apparently able to deduce the date of Cheryl's birthday.

This means her birthday must be the only remaining date in the month he was originally told. Given that there are two dates left in August and one in July, it has to be the July date.

So the answer is July 16.

May and June are ruled out by the first statement, as Albert knows that Bernard can't identify the month from his date so it is not 18/19. He can only know this because it is not May or June.

Bernard can use Albert's statement, as we can, to rule out May and June - so his Day must be 14, 15, 16 or 17. Bernard knows that Albert couldn't previously rule out 14 but can now. So 15,16,17 left.

I'm afraid I took a shortcut rather than thinking and scanned upwards in my grid for "what's different" forgetting that Bernard's missing information is the month. So yes, 16 is the only remaining day that uniquely identifies a month
Ans is July 16

Unknown said...

Here’s mine:

Remember, Albert is told either May, June, July or August.

Bernard is told either 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 or 19

Let’s go through it line by line.

Albert: I don’t know when Cheryl’s birthday is, but I know that Bernard doesn’t know too.

All Albert knows is the month, and every month has more than one possible date, so of course he doesn’t know when her birthday is. The first part of the sentence is redundant.

The only way that Bernard could know the date with a single number, however, would be if Cheryl had told him 18 or 19, since of the ten date options only these numbers appear once, as May 19 and June 18.

For Albert to know that Bernard does not know, Albert must therefore have been told July or August, since this rules out Bernard being told 18 or 19.

Line 2) Bernard: At first I don’t know when Cheryl’s birthday is, but now I know.

Bernard has deduced that Albert has either August or July. If he knows the full date, he must have been told 15, 16 or 17, since if he had been told 14 he would be none the wiser about whether the month was August or July. Each of 15, 16 and 17 only refers to one specific month, but 14 could be either month.

Line 3) Albert: Then I also know when Cheryl’s birthday is.

Albert has therefore deduced that the possible dates are July 16, Aug 15 and Aug 17. For him to now know, he must have been told July. Since if he had been told August, he would not know which date for certain is the birthday.

The answer, therefore is July 16.

First we need to figure out if Albert knows the month or the day. If he knows the day, then there is no chance that Bernard knows the birthday, so it must be that Albert knows the month.
From the first statement, we know that Albert is sure that Bernard doesn't know the birthday, so May and June should be ruled out (the day 19 only appears in May and the day 18 only appears in June). In other words, if Albert had May or June, then he cannot be sure that Bernard doesn't know, since Bernard could have had 18 or 19.

Following that statement, Bernard knows that May and June are ruled out.

Then, Bernard is able to know which month it is. So it must be either July 16, August 15 and August 17 (not 14th as then he can't know).

Since Albert subsequently can also be sure of the date, he must know it's July. If it's August, he can't be sure as there is August 15 and 17.

So the answer is July 16.

The answer is July 16. The is my explanation.

The days ranges from 14 to 19, with 18 and 19 appearing only once. So if Cheryls B-day is either 18 or 19 then Benard will know because Cheryl told him the day.

If Cheryl has told Albert her birth month was may or june, it is possible that her B-day will be June 18 or May 19. So if Albert is sure that Benard does not know means that Cheryls told Albert that her B-day is either August or July.

Benard did not know before, but how comes he knows now; after Albert has spoken.

I have 5 dates left in July and August from my solution, Thats 14 to 17 with 14 appearing two times.
(July 14, July 16, August 14, August 15, August 17).

So Benard will not know the date of Cheryl B-day if she told him 14.
So the day is not 14.

I have 3 dates left
(July 16, August 15, August 17).

Since Benard spoke, Albert now knows Cheryl B-day, If Cheryl had told Albert her B-day was in August then Albert would not know because there are two possible dates in August ..

So The Answer Is JULY 16.

Anonymous said...

Albert knows the month and Bernard knows the day, and at first they dont know the birthday, it's safe to knock off the months of may and June because since Bernard knows the day, it will be easy to choose may 19 or June 18 because the numbers 18 and 19 appear just once in the days given.

Bernard now says he knows the birthday, which strikes of July 14 and august 14. Because if he was given 14 as the day he will still be confused as there is July 14 and august 14, knowing full well he was given just the day.

Lastly, Albert says he knows the birthday too, which strikes of august because there are 3 days in august and would have still been confused, as he wasn't given the day and may have to choose between the three days in august.

What is left is July 16th. That's Cheryl's birthday!!

July 16th
Bernard can only know initially if he has been given a date number which is unique namely 18th or 19th

But you can rule out May and June (the months containing 18th and 19th) immediately because Albert says Benard cannot know. So it must be July or August and based on this

Based on this , Bernard says he now knows. That means it has to be July 16th, August 15th or August 17th. if it was 14th, he would need to know the month to know the date so we can rule out 14th

Based on this Albert says he too knows, which means It cannot be August 15th or 17th (if it were, he would need to know the date number as well). So it must be July 16th

The answer is July 16, after eliminating logically.

First, if Albert was told the single dates of 18 and 19, it would have been easy for Albert without needing the month. But since Albert showed confusion at first, then Benard knew it wasn't any of those dates.

So we eliminate May and June. In the next months July and August, we decide to eliminate 14 since it cannot be any date appearing in these two months left.

Since we have just 3 dates left Linda, it cannot be a month with two dates since there is no further clue to use for elimination. So we automatically assume it is July with only 16 left in that date.

So it is July 16.

Albert knows month, Bernard knows the date. Bernard will know if the birthday is on June 18 or May 19, because there are no other 18th or 19th.
Albert knows for sure Bernard does not know implies the month is not May or June, otherwise there is a chance Bernard may know. Therefore the month is July or August.

Bernard at first doesn't know, but knows now. Therefore not July 14 or August 14, otherwise Bernard would still not know. That leaves us with July 16, August 15 and August 17.

Albert knows now. If it is August, Albert would still not know as there are 2 choices possible.

Hence the answer is July 16.

At first the question appears impossible to answer without a bit of extra information, but we know Cheryl has already told Albert the month of her birthday, and Bernard the day.

Each of the men does not know what the other has been told.

This allows reasoning to be used to begin to whittle down the number of options.

So, firstly, for Albert to be ‘certain’ that Bernard cannot know the answer – as suggested in the first statement he makes – we can deduct that the birthday is not in May or June.

This is because in the months of May and June there are numbers (dates) that only occur once across the four months – namely May 19 and June 18.

If Albert had been given May or June as the month, there is no way he could be certain that Bernard doesn’t know the birthday. Bernard, after all, might have been the number 18 or 19.

For Albert to be ‘certain’ that Bernard doesn’t know, Albert must have been given a month that does not contain one of these ‘unique’ dates – i.e. July or August.

Albert’s disclosure now gives Bernard the clue he needs, and says he now knows the birthday.

Bernard only knows the number of Cheryl’s birthday, but from Albert’s statement he has now also ruled out both May and June. This is because he realises Albert has ruled out May and June because of the ‘single number’ aspect above.

So there are now just five remaining dates – July 14, July 16, Aug 14, Aug 15, Aug 17 – and Bernard says he knows which is the birthday.

Because he now knows the date, we can whittle it down further to three dates by ruling out the numbers that appear in duplicate.

If Cheryl had told Bernard that her birthday fell on the 14th of the month, then he could not have worked out the date at this stage.

However, as he states that he now knows the date, we can rule out July 14 or August 14.

This leaves just three dates to choose from – July 16, Aug 15 and Aug 17.

Following Bernard’s statement, Albert is then apparently able to deduce the date of Cheryl’s birthday.

This means her birthday must be the only remaining date in the month he was originally told. Given that there are two dates left in August and one in July, it has to be the July date.

So the answer is July 16.

Tobi Ladele said...

The answer is August 17.

Albert knows the month while Bernard knows the day. Albert must have said Bernard does not know the date with certainty because the month Cheryl told him must have had only days that were repeated (I.e. months that have 14, 15, 16 and 17 and not contain 19 and 18). This eliminates May and June.
Bernard caught on to Albert's logic that knew the month must either be July or August and the only reason he would have been able to deduce the birthday date from this would be if the date appeared only once in the months of July and August which is 17.
Then Albert also caught on to Bernard's logic.
Smart kids.

Unknown said...

May 15 (i think), She tells Albert the month not the day and she tells Bernard the day not the month, since it was stated that she told them separately and respectively, it is safe to assume the months were for Albert and the dates were for Bernard. Also, reasoning why the listed dates were arranged in a ratio manner (3:2 & 2:3) rather than listed. So the answer is to look for the date that corresponds between two similar ratios which is May 15 and August 15, knowing Albert got the month and not the day & vice versa, the logical answer is May 15.

I don't think this is a maths question, its logic and reasoning.

Linda its may 19. Because 19 is the only day that doesn't have another month with it. May only. Others cancel out each other.
