Court nullifies movement restriction during Lagos monthly sanitation

Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has nullified the restriction of movement of Lagos state residents during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise. Delivering his judgement in a suit filed by some aggrieved residents, Justice Mohammed described as unlawful the restrictions of residents, adding that it was a violation of the citizens’ right to personal liberty and freedom of movement protected by sections 35 and 41 of the Constitution.

He voided the power of the Lagos State Government and its agent to arrest any citizen found moving between 7am & 10am during the monthly sanitation which holds every last Saturday of every month.

This is pretty important... I guess it was high time the restriction got lifted, because it's not like people who don't go out spend that time cleaning their environment...

This is not so good, dat means goodbye to sanitation cos nobody would be willing to stay back at home for some cleaning up if they have the option of being on the move. Linda take note!

Very commendable.Alotta infringement of our rights under many guises.I wish other states can follow suit.
I think the restriction of movement during presidential visits should be abolished too.

Good move.I be always believed that we can clean our environment without our movement being restricted.Govt should just set up an effective monitoring system.

Very good. This is a long awaited development. In settled societies, elections are even conducted on normal working days, pples movements aren't restricted & they can drop into the polling booths in the course of their daily routine to cast their votes. Bravo Justice Idris!

#smh - I respect the judicial process however those Saturdays are the only time Lagosians find time to do meaningful clean up o.

#GEJ shouldn't be afraid as Buhari has promised that after swearing in he will concentrate on the future of Nigeria and not go back to those who have constantly looted the Treasury of this country in the past decade. However Mama War should be careful as International Criminal Court in the Hague hasn't promised anything apart from the fact that those who incite violence shall be prosecuted. Stone, poison etc.
