'Facts About The New Lagos State Smoking In Public Places Law'
Article sent in by Choices Nigeria.
There have been different views on the
recently passed smoking law since it was signed by the Lagos State Governor,
Babatunde Raji Fashola on 17th of February 2014.
We have now
obtained a copy of the law and are surprised to read that contrary to what
some people think, the law only becomes effective on the 17th
of August 2014, which is six months after the Governor signed. This means
that even the police that have been harassing smokers are not aware of
this. Incredibly, the law also allows for smoking in open places such as
on the streets, roads and highways as wells as in 10% of hotels, bars,
night clubs and tertiary institutions. It even goes further to state that
the law will be enforced by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency
(LASEPA), meanwhile all manner of people have been harassing smokers, even
LATSMA and Boys Scout.. Can our government ensure that the public are well
informed about laws they pass to prevent undue harassment of its citizens.

Great stuff, Linda! Please can you also use this forum to bring the Lagos state Government's attention to NOISE POLLUTION? They need to regulate the ways in which Churches and Mosques project their sermons into our bedrooms. It is dangerous to health, and we've just let it carry on without controlling it. Can you kindly champion the cause? Thanks, and God bless
I knw the police will take advantage of this situation..... Naija police and harassment, i dont knw, they derive special joy in harassing people.... Thank God for this piece though, things will definately change nw.... . . . ***CURRENTLY IN JUPITER***
The problem is there is no defined hierarchy and perfect flow of information through the set channels and to make matters worse, no clear definition of duties or would I say neglect/infringement of one/another's duties. This is inherent in all tiers of government, probably is why we are as sh*t as we are.
Maybe he signed the thing and dropped it in his office... the PA overheard him talking about it; didn't hear the whole and went to spread the little he heard. What's the essence of it if it's not made known to the public. Naija peeps too falls for anything.

10% of hotels, restaurants, etc. So who is the 10% allowed to permit smokers? Do they get the entire smoking crowd? Do they now have jam packed nights with people smoking their lives into charred and gory oblivion. These are the types of laws that public policy folks squint at. What is wrong with everyone going off tobacco at the same time. Anyway, one large motivation for the successful war against tobacco in the US was that the state and federal health insurance systems were having to pay for the treatment and disability of smokers while big tobacco continued to make its billions. So the states and feds went after big tobacco. In Nigeria na who wan pay for your medical care? when time reach the person will find the closest enemy and blame them for the catastrophic cancer. Smoke on people, smoke on.
Linda, this article is really what I have been saying.......Even when d gay law was just a bill.......police was already collecting peoples phones searching for traces of gayism.A fact I saw as a mockery of our security intelligence even at d expense of the ordinary man and advancement of terrorism.Yesterday,a friend back then in school narrated his ordeal in d hands of police.........at a stop and search where robbery had occured, police were searching phones for gay ish and robbers got home celebrating. What a nuisance, what a shame!
Yes please Linda. People are unaware. Imagine a policeman harassing me for smoking in my car and I wasn't even driving, my driver was. Parted with 3k that fateful day.

Nigeria government is so gullible. you have not made provision for the side effect of a law yet they pass it. trying to copy ethics in overseas. Here in Canada you have smoking areas. at work and at bus terminals. have they created such. smoking isn't illegal it's not hard drugs so everyone's should be able to exercise their rights. Same as they saying cashless Nigeria. yet no light , pos, online purchase, home delivery, 247 atm, security...Tush!!

Although we appreaciate this, at the same time, things should be done properly.
That one concerns smokers. Their headache!
Is choices Nigeria sponsored by the tobacco industry? Go figure!

You can write to Pollution Affairs Department, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Alawusa, Ikeja. They will abate the nuisance.
Nigerians hate reading that's one thing for sure
