Dear LIB readers, should I take political ads?

Abeg, I need y'all to help me out with this dilemma. Contrary to what some of you think, I haven't, so far, collected a dime from any political party to run ads or a story. If you see any banner ads on my blog, it's from Google adsense and not direct from me. And the stories are absolutely not sponsored.

But the thing is, in the last few months, and it has especially intensified in the last few weeks, reps of political parties have been coming to me to run their ads. And the kind of money they are throwing at me...OMG! Lol. So far, I have resisted. I restrict my ads to strictly brands but these political ad  people will not leave me alone. They say every media platform in the world run political ads so I should be open minded. I'm talking about APC, PDP, their supporters and enemies.

And the money is PLENTY! Like, y'all won't believe how much they are throwing at me.. Lol. What do y'all think? Should I run political ads from both parties? It could make me increase LIB Giveaway Mondays, so all of us will chop inside. Lol. Or should I just leave it alone? I'm sincerely confused. *sigh*

Let your conscience judge you! But, please Linda I know it is tempting with the huge money throwing at you for their campaign, hence keep your hands OFF any political parties especially APC & PDP.
At the end of it all you will be at peace and free of any conspiracy.

Words enough 4 the wise!

As long as they understand that you won't restrict the platform to just one party, you are open to any party that has something for you to show to people. Post just what they ask you to.. DO NOT ADD OR SUBTRACT. Don't just chill there and watch God's open doors for you this 2015 waste right infront of you. Ok o

Babe, abeg, abeg abeg. Leave this people and their wahala. This kind of offer has a way of coming back to bite someone in the ass in the not-so-distant future. The millions that you may get would be nothing compared to consequent problems that would arise, as a result. Enjoy your own money in peace and leave political finance. Na because I like you and your blog, na im make I dey talk. You are a celeb blogger and any political rascal would want to do just about anything to smear your business provided it works for them. Infact, no do. At all!

Hi Linda, i think you should open up ads to BOTH political parties to show that you are non-partisan (and i hope you are) and also to make some money.

I suggest you restrict their ads to the small boxes. Do NOT allow any political party ads on your large background ad. Also, I suggest you collect the same amount of money from both political parties to make it fair and most importantly, maintain your INTEGRITY.

Pls take o..take from all of them sef.

Hello Linda,
You are a journalist. Your duty is to provide information in a clear, concise and unbiased manner. If political parties want to use your site to get across to fellow Nigerians, I see no reason why you shouldn't let them do so. Moreover they are offering to pay you handsomely for this service. I'll only advise you refuse strong political rhetoric or accusatory ads. You don't want to start a mini-war on your website. You could take this a step further and create a political discourse page on your blog. This will encourage people to have discussions based on the stories you post. You can be an influence in getting the political message to Nigerians. The outcome of this election will determine the future of our beloved country. You have an opportunity to be part of the drive for change. On a lighter note, do not forget me ooo when the money starts rolling in. Lol. You have a great blog and seem like a down to earth person. Keep it up. Take care and a Happy New year to you.

The decision is entirely up to you and the long term strategy of your blog/brand/company. As your blog becomes bigger, success would have to be sustained on core values, market oriented focus and a long term sustainable strategy. Having said that, if you hope to remain social commentator and blogger with a middle age entertainment and fad-driven urban market, you have to present issues that are topical to that segment otherwise your followership(which is by nature easily distracted) may leave. The ads must however be strategically edited to remove inflammatory content and must carry a standard disclaimer eg "The opinions expressed are sponsored by an interest group and are not the views of Linda Ikeji. The words have been edited as appropriate and comments are welcome". A readers poll of your making may however be included at the end of such posts as this may be helpful to diffuse dissenting emotions by the 'opinion of the masses'.
If however, it does not fit into your long term strategy and its only the financial gains that's tempting you... Then you may want to think whether the amount they're offering is worth the long term survival of your blog. #JustSaying ( I would gladly collect a consultation fee for advise o...) Lol.

I think you should design a policy that would be used for issues like this and times like this, the policy should state clearly your objectives as LIB and might probably state that LIB might under some circumstances take ads from political parties only as a sub-objective to profit making which shall in the long run feed into LIB's cast in stone objectives. It should also be stated clearly that an advert on your Blog is only intended for profit making and does not define your political stands or wishes.

don't agree, you are already making money and will continue to make good money. Don't collect money that you and I know has not been gotten honestly, but stolen from Nigerians. If you do run their ads you'll just become one of them, right now the principle of the matter is the most important thing.

A sincere advice from my heart. Linda don't throw this opportunity away, for you are a business woman. you have other adverts on your blog, why not grab it while the offer last. We are all in business to make money madam Ikeji. Running their AD does not compel you to vote for any of the parties. If they approached you then its a plus that your blog is making waves. Take the AD and make the money. Maintain your political 'bystander' position in all your views such that comments and/or ads will not be attributed to your person. All the best with your millions if not billions.

Dear Linda, it is good to know that we still have people, like you with proper values. In my opinion, you should accept Ads from the politicians and the parties. However, you must indicate on the Ads the fact that they are "sponsored, and do not represent your opinions or affiliations". If you want to take your disclosures further, you may actually disclose the name/identity of the sponsor of the Ad.

You should properly vet the contents of each Ad to ensure that they are factual and not intended to mislead readers. You may insist that Ads should not contain messages that attack opponents, etc. But you should accept Ads. This opportunity comes once in 4 years, and I do not see how this will negatively impact your brand or your reputation. You have only 6 weeks left to make your money, so just start collecting Ads immediately. And good luck to you.

USA news outlets take monies from ALL political party. Seize the moment dear.

Are you not a business woman? People already think you've been collecting money for all the political stories you feature so what's the fuss about? This is your season..

Anonymous said...

Linda please stay neutral, politics have a way of tarnishing people's image. And you have a beautiful image already. No let them pour sand sand for your garri....

Mona4real said...

There are ads right? Go ahead and do so and collect ads from ALL political parties. Do not shown any favoritism or give any opinion that maybe mis-interpreted. Allow all to have equal coverage as well. I mean, newspapers take ads from them too.

Unknown said...

I think u shuld weigh ur options as much as u tryin to be neutral!

You have already decided to take it, you just trying to prevent a backlash. If you enjoy the fats stolen from the masses, prepare for the consequences.

There's obviously a good reason why you've been hesitant to do it so far, so i think you should keep going with your gut feeling.
I can imagine just how much money they are offering you, and although you say it will increase how much you offer for the giveaway, that still isn't a good reason. Although you might think those are good intentions it doesn't really matter.
You don't want to become entangled in their political fight, you don't know just how deep into it they might drag you and God forbid your life is put in danger.
And if your blog becomes a website for politicians with no real plan for Nigeria to advertise you actually don't know if the number of viewers you lose will be worth how much they pay you.
And the simple fact that they are throwing so much money at you, is in itself a dirty deed, politicians think they can buy anything and anyone; that's why they're offering you so much money they're trying to entice you, Linda i hope you're better than that.
Ultimately it's your own decision and i hope you make the right one. Just know when you accept there's no going back. Whenever there's an election they'll call on you and ask you to post because they paid you and in their heads they own your blog and it's content because they paid you so much money.

Dear Linda u are blessed with ur specialty now and God knows why He endowed u with such prowess. I here by proffer my pieces of advice that u should run ads for whoever that comes to for such purpose. With ur terms and conditions u sound it pretty clear to so that they will know ur nonpartisan stance. Therefore grab the opportunity and make ur money through this medium. May God grant u more wisdom champion the cause of this blog.

Hello Linda... I dont really feel it's a right choice to accept political ADs. In business, u most determine ur purpose and targets. Quite well, the money is much, it may only speed up ur revenue and by so doing, u may lose ur focus. Asides, u cant stay neutral any more when it comes to political issues. U re this type that has independent mind, dont get tempted with what will kill ur independence. Some of the LIB readers will even clamp on you. I feel you are not really making much yet, it only looks much considering where u started from and that it's a one man business. I feel you should just look for ways to improve on ur business and also invest in other sources. You will gradually get to the promise land

Linda, as a true advocate for justice, peace and progress of Nigeria. Please use your blog as a platform to educate your uninformed readers by researching on what each party PDP had done and what APC proposed to do. That way you are not either campaigning nor supporting any party. You ONLY want your dedicated readers to be well informed and well educated while voting for their choosing candidate.
DO NOT TAKE MONEY FROM ANY POLITICAL PARTIES...YOUR HARD EARNED REPUTATION WOULD BE TARNISHED!

BELIEVE IT OR NOT!!!

Please collect the money and pocket it, invest some and enjoy your life with the rest. Life is short, no one knows tomorrow. You don't know how long you will remain in business so make hay while the sun is still shining. Above all, seek God's face and that of your family. I believe if it's purely for advertisement sake there is nothing wrong.

Enjoy girl!

There is absolutely nothing wrong in accepting political ads. LIB is no different from Radio or TV stations that accept political ads. My advise is for you to remain neutral and ensure that the messages on the ads do not compromise your moral sense of objectivity. Do also ensure that you give requesting political parties equal coverage if the fee paid warrants such coverage. Aside these, nothing spoil! Abeg carry go!! and make some extra Mai-Bornus, Isongs and Azikiwes. And if you choose to soft-pedal, you can as well accept some Ahmadu Bellos chicken change
