@Annmarie, in that part of the country, the new wife is taken to farm indicating that she's been accepted into the family and can now feed from the same source with them, indicating she's not a guest anymore. Like my part of igbo land that the Umuadas (daughters of the land) would have a party (@ur expense) to welcome you into their family.
So taking her to farm is just a traditional right, not to actually work. Though she's expected to come back with tubers of yam....(doesn't matter how they're got) which she cooks for her husband and inlaws, to show her cooking prowess. I don't know if it's done these days cos of many people's busy schedule and services of food contractors.
