UK visa: Nigerians to begin payment of £3,000 bond from November

It's a done deal people. From November 2013, Nigeria will be among the six listed Commonwealth 'high risk' countries whose citizens will be required to pay £3,000 tourists visa bond before they are allowed into the UK. The remaining five are: India, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

But here's what the UK government are saying to pacify citizens of these countries who are outraged by this new policy. They say it's not all visitors that will be required to pay the bond, just people they consider 'highest risk'; that is people who will collect visa and refuse to leave Britain or overstay their visa terms. Those paying bonds will receive the bond back, if they abided by the terms of their visa.

According to the UK Financial Times report last Friday, the UK Home Office say there's no going back as the scheme is their most effective way of tackling abuse in their immigration system. Nigeria and the other five countries account for more than five hundred thousand visa applications in 2012.

But this scheme will kinda affect business in the UK as Nigeria is said to be the 6th biggest spenders on luxury goods in the country.

I wonder why Nigerians are so crazy about these countries anyway, maybe I would have been this crazy about them too if I hadn't lived away from home most of my life.
I would rather live in a country where I can park as many cars as I want in my yard, have millions stacked in multiple bank accounts and pay almost peanuts as tax than live in this crazy place where I might have to pay tax for even the air I breath soon.
But then again, the government is to blame for most of the exodus from Nigeria.

U said it all, it's people like you who can never contribute anything to the improvement of the economy, if you really lived outside then you should know why these taxes are imposed on citizens, for free schemes like health n education, but in Nigeria here, we are our own government, we provide these things for ourselves yet we go out every election to vote for a new leader.

Its a shame it has come to this and naija Govt.is silent about it cos they know they can afford the bond with their loots fron naija traesury. The UK is ungrateful for bringing up this bond after looting naija forcefully for years to enrich themselves. Now that they can't loot naija forcefully anymore through colonization they wanna loot naija through this bond cos their economy is running out of money. I pray naijans should learn their lessons and face this head on by cutting all ties with the UK,both educationally and business wise, for just one year starting from that November 2013. I assure you the UK govt will come begging for you to come to their countries. RUBBISH, who do they think they are???!

Already this is causing problems here in the UK with the coalition parties disagreeing over this scheme..it may just not see the light of day or where it does..it would be grossly watered down.

Now to Nigerians..from the comments I have read so far here, it is a shame that not one person has proposed or even suggested any positive counter to this xenophobic and almost racist policy.

The Indians would mobilise and campaign against it, but Nigerians would remain complacent, get abused and still pay.

The next generation of this country are already failing!

And how many Nigerians have a yard talk less of one big enough to park their many cars? Millions in the bank? Minimum wage is 18k pm (£69/$112). Little or no tax? The poor are losing their means of living everyday in Lagos because they evade tax. The tax collected goes into Tinubu, Fowler etc coffers. You know nothing so pls say nothing. We pray for the day Nigeria can be like UK or US in the 50s.

The Nigerian government that should protest our rights will do nothing but sit back, fold their hands and watch our citizens be subjected to such treatment.Unfortunately, come November,Nigerian citizens are going to be flocking to pay this fee.We could try boycotting the UK for a year and see if this doesn't persuade them to change this stupid policy.

I see no point of this discussion, if a man finds a leakage in his house he will try and mend it, that is what the UK government has done, but Nigeria will not bother if there was a leakage in their house, they will rather not bother or do anything about it, its a growing problem for the UK and this is how they feel best to tackle the problem. We should all be ashamed of having this discuss, if you really have to travel and its very important for you, get the money and travel... but I understand Nigerian travel to UK just to buy cloth and nothing more than that. if for that its a good policy
Please spend your money in Nigeria to boost the economy and stop wasting the last money in your account to travel to UK so your friends we know you belong.. we should start appreciating our Nation and each individual should play a role and make a difference in Nigeria.
You can start your own biz with 3000 pounds including the ticket money and spending money altogether why fight over another mans country and there policy, The same Nigeria drove Ghana away years ago, did you complain about that policy? anyway in all I put the blame on our leaders who have made us poor, a rich country like Nigeria should have all it takes to keep its citizen happy with a better life, they choose not to, it will come to hunt them.

lakehay said...

all starting like a joke, but UK is not facing the real source of their problem which comes from the poor EU countries and their citizens: Bulgaria, Poland, Lithuania, Romanians e.t.c. These people share close to the same right as British Citizens and exploit their system. Contributing little or nothing to them. Painful to see people that actually bring money into their system are having to suffer for it. Started last year from the removal of PSW, now to £3000 bond.#SMH

Nigerians should speak out, this is a xenophobic reactive law, as a result of the growing popularity of UKIP.

Fact: We contribute GREATLY to the economy, especially n retail. Watch sales figures on Oxford street dip this summer.

Problem in this country is the welfare state. The English like to moan and drink. My neighbour is on'Incapacity' benefit, the man is a lazy bugger. Sits at home all day, watching telly. I have spotted about 3 households...all oyinbo, no wan work.

This policy will backfire, go and send your money in Dubai. Boycott the uk and watch them revoke this stupid policy.

Naija should charge uk citizens £5000 to apply for visa as a " non- exploitation" bond.

Nigerians will make so much noise yet they aren't shit beyond the borders of Nigeria. The slave masters and the people we like to imitate(accent and all) have shut y'all asses sown. What I don't understand about this bond is that many UK residents don't even make that type of month per month. This is an embarrassment to Nigeria, it clearly highlights how desperate we are, and how fucked up the government is.

Trust Nigerians to turn their visits to the UK to a thing of status instead of bowing their heads full of weaves, rice, and moet in shame.

The way l look at it we Nigerians we will still pay this bond as long as will still want to get out of Nigeria. l know some people that spend millions naira with their agent trying to get U.K,USA and Canada visa some of this people sell their house, car, land to get their Visa. £3000 is just a small % of the money some people spend trying to get their visa and student visa as well. if we nigeria should take this other country will follow ls only the government that can stop this by asking nigerians to first pay two millions naira bond to any Nigerians that want to go to any of this counties as a bond that they will be good ambassador of Nigeria, people will stay at home. And this countries they will be begging people to come to their country. African will need to wake up days of slavery is over let flight for our right and tell our leader what will want and also to love ourself. if we african we can love ourself a white person can not love as well ........love you all my african sisters and brothers xx

@jayden, the racism in UK is child's play compared to tribalism in Nigeria. I've never experienced racism in my 15 years in the UK. I spent 4 years in Nigeria until a year ago.
I was refused 3 apartments because the landlord didn't like people from my tribe. I didn't get a job I was up for because the boss's wife's younger sister wanted the job.
You mentioned debt? Did you not borrow the money? If you can't afford to repay don't borrow in the first place. You said plenty of depressed people? Have you bothered to talk to any of the millions of graduates who are walking the streets in Nigeria?
Silly teenagers killing themselves everyday? The average Nigerian girl from 17yrs is already sleeping with men for money to buy BBs, hair and clothes. I dare you to try and use money to get a 17yr old white girl.
Bills bills bills? Dude, are you in Naija at all. The bills we pay in the UK are for the things we use. I pay my taxes and can clearly see them at work. PHCN charges up to 15k pm per household but don't provide light. You spend thousands on petrol/diesel upon your 18k wages.
Loving your country should not mean that you deny the multitude of embarrasing problems we have. Just go to the passport office in Festac to see how many people are trying to get out.

Nigerians are not being charge a fee to enter the UK. It is simply a cautionary incentive to NOT abuse visa requirements. Nigerians in addition to the other countries mentioned have the highest numbers of visa abusers. Do you expect the UK govt to ignore these practices? The NHS is a prime example of the negative effects of 'unknowns' in the system. Hospitals are stretched beyond calculated capacity.
Also they cannot be tracked down. So if they commit a crime they'll not be found.

How can the UK government come up with such a barbaric idea, and the most annoying part of this conversation is that we have some Nigerians who have bought British passports by "ARRANGE MARRIAGE" supporting such a move e.g "KEHINDE". I want you to remember one thing yeah, that you still have some of your families in Nigeria who will fall under first time visitors and will be expected to pay the £3,000. People such as your father, mother and younger ones who have no intention to come and over stay, how do you expect them to raise such funds? Knowing fully well that they just want to come and see their family members with no intention of overstaying. Or why has the UKBA created the Family visit route which is suppose to enable people who have family ties abroad to see them, if they are now going to make it conditional with the £3,000 bond. They are definately breaching the human rights law on this one and we need someone to call them back to order.
