Dear LIB readers, let's discuss this

A LIB reader sent this to me and said to share and get people's opinion on the topic. See it below
Dear Linda, sorry if you don't mind, all protocols observed! I would like you to throw up this topic for debate. Why do people say that somebody is Igbotic and the Yorubas are not Yorubatic, or Hausas Hausatic. Is it not an ideology that is meant to make Igbos less themselves? Please let's discuss this. Thank you

Hi Linda, interesting topic, I remembered then when I and my guys were still single, we used the term to refer to muscular looking older babes.

Lagos is kinda a yoruba state so yoruba's can get away wit som of d ras things they do as a normal thing but wen an igbo person does same it stands out. I ve also seen yorubas and hausas who com from d village to town and don't try to portray they re wazup people unlike ibo's do, they land in town today and problem starts wit forming. The ibo accent too doesn't help matters cos its like wen u hav it, it takes yrs to wash away or it never goes sef, while 4 yorubas if u re not too loud, u fit hide ur 'H' factor. Lastly, I Guess its because we find a lot of igbo wannabes than other tribes :)

You are also joining them in disrespecting Michelle and black is is in very poor taste and totally disrespectful of the woman in question and black womanhood. Take it down

Igbo's have always been made to look bad. This is just a ploy to get more Igbo people to dilute or leave completely their culture and traditions. Igbotic is just a way of saying that the person is very much like the way Igbo's generally behave. If you are Igbo, it is better to be Igbotic than to be an Igbo that is Yorubatic or Hausatic or even English-tic. Let Igbo's be themselves without negative connotations. Thanks.

B4 I comment, let me laff. 'Hehehehehe, hohohohoho, hahahahaha'. Igbos, don't feel bad. Its one of those things. It simply means, ur a tribe worth giving extra attention to. Keep doing ur thing.

Igbotic just makes more sense to pronounce...the word jells.. just imagine yo-ru-ba-tic or hau-sa-tic..too stressful

Yemisi said...

Also, I've heard people say call people that are 'bush' or uncivilised Igbotic. Like I said before, it's a way of saying that the Igbo's should leave their way of doing things and do it the English/Yoruba/Hausa way, because it is deemed to be better. I believe Yoruba's can be Yorubatic and Hausa's Hausatic. Only that Igbotic is more commonly used.

Well I think as Yoruba have had more insult directed at me most especially by the Igbo's and I say this with no annoyance @ all. I am not in anyway tribalistic and I get all with everyone it does not matter who you are or what part of the country you come from.
But I must say I have had direct insults and attacks on me and sometimes my mouth dropped to the floor. The most recent one was by an Igbo lady who I used to have a lot of respect for 'Why are Yoruba women so ugly'? Lol. Had to laugh cus I thot she can't be serious, to make me feel better she said well of course not U. Not jst this woman then the question of 'why are Yoruba's so razz, why r u all so tribalistic?etc So my dear I think been called Igbotic is a lot much better than someone saying generally all the women in ur ethnic group are Ugly. Don't get me wrong there are tribalistic Bigots in every tribe but after all have heard have learnt to block such people and move with people who accept me and not Judge me based on my tribe whether they are Igbo, Yoruba or from Niger Delta. I wld rather be Yorubatic than Uglytic.

Guys, lets cool it with the tribal mudslinging! Every tribe has a "rude-boy" name...you dont have to look far to find em. I am Yoruba, and my Igbo pals have sometimes jokingly called me "ofe-n-manu". They said it means "EATER OF OIL". And its true...am Yoruba...I eat a LOT of red palmoil in my Yoruba cuisine. Is that an insult? It depends on how I see it.A guy once got angry because I called him "Aboki"! I mean...is that an insult? Guys, lets take it easy!

Someone can always start using "Yorubatic" just like someone must have started the "igbotic" thing. Its just a saying.

OK i think this is going to cause some serious tribal conflict. linda am sure u dnt wanna see us fighting here abeg... but to answer d question, lolz i think its cos igbo ppl are very traditional, and d culture is just very strong that u cant miss it! for instance 80 % of d people have met think am Igbo but am not but i doubt if an Igbo chic cld be mistaken for another tribe! . that charisma and attitude of being an Igbo man or woman is just there... they tend to have dis hmmn i no even know how to explain my self , but i mean no offence .. am sure u guys know what am trying to say ...

Igbotic was coined out of the way Igbo people do things I.e bush with strong accent and wear ugly shoes and do anything for money.

DELTA BABE said...

I think it just has to do with th terms used to classify a group of people that act too local .... Ibos r Igbotic, Yorubas r simply termed RAZ while d Hausas r called NARMAs.........

Anonymous said...

I say the person is Yorubaish or Isalekoish or just plain razz yoruba lokito. Guess for igbos, Igbotic rhymes better:)

The Hausa's are by nature more sophisticated, simple minded and the most ignorant. There isn't much more you can say about them as they don't display any real traits beyond their frenetic worship of their feudal lords and wholesome dedication to their culture and religion.

Ibos and yorubas are more savage in their ways and very unwholesome and untrue in their cultural and religious beliefs. This is why of all the major ethnic groups in that country, the Hausa's remain the most untainted by outside influences.
The igbotic wannabes eschew their ibo tradition and wannabe like Americans, so also are the yorubas. You only need to come and see them in London to hear them try to be more oyibo than the oyibos. Razzness at the highest level. You won't catch the Hausas belittle themselves that way as they stay true to themselves

A truly proud Ibo or Yoruba man can never be referred to in those terms as igbotic or yorubaish as they are not trying to be anything other than they are... The wannabees are the igbotic ones. Those who stay true to themselves are just proud Ibo, yoruba or hausa men.

At least that is how i view it from my end. I am from a minority ethnic group.

I've often wondered this aswell! My cousin always says it. She says things like, my mum is igbotic or I'll marry and igbotic man! It annoys me so much. I feel like, if you speak Igbo or incorporate Igbo culture and tradition in your everyday life, then you are razz or igbotic. It's such a shame because out of all the tribes in Nigeria, Igbos are the ones loosing out. Their kids don't speak or understand the language. Their tradition and culture ends with their parents generation. It's just sad. I won't stop speaking my language or eating traditional foods or dancing to osadebe and oriental brothers or wearing my traditional attire every now and again. I encourage other young Igbo people to embrace their heritage. We are not igbotic. We are simply cultured.

I believe the igbos were the ones that invented this word*igbotic*.this goes a long way to prove how much westernised we want to be.yes, I am an igbo lady and proudly igbo that I live in london with my two boys, and they both answer igbo names and they understand and speak igbo very well more than most igbo kids in nigeria. People wonder how I and their dad were able to do that. It has helped us in cautioing them when we are in public places that it works like magic as we are not allowed to physically discipline them especially in public places. Just one word of igbo and you will see then stay put for as long as we want it.whereas you see my fellow igbo parents struggling to caution their kids in english when they are opportuned of having a second language. What's my point then? Igbo's are civilised people just like their other counterparts but we believe and practise that for you to be porsh or to show affluent or in our words not to be igbotic that you have to put away our igbo culture. The yorubas and hausas imbibe by their culture and are very proud of their culture no matter how rich or civilised they are. Majority of the yorubas and hausa still answer their native names and speak their mother tongue very well but the igbos prefer to name their children jennifer, sandra, sean,as a matter of fact my friend gave her daughter the name Beyounce and the ones whose parents were *igbotic* by giving them an igbo name will re-baptise themselves with one porsh english name.majority of the time you hear our millenium parents say to you when u want to speak igbo to their kids *oh! they don't hear igbo*....lol. My advise to igbos is for us to embrace our culture just like the yorubas and hausas.

I TOTLALLY DISAGREE WITH THIS AS I HAVE MANY IGBO FRIENDS THAT REFER TO THE YORUBAS AS MGBATI MGBATI AND THE "OMO IBADAN KINI SOOW.....".

whoever that says that to the Igbos just want to further make Ndigbo leave their pride of cultures and values...its a way to bring the war and discrimination in Nigeria upon the Igbos. I AM A PROUD IGBOTIC LADY who takes at nothing to showcase who i am. i speak my language anywhere i see my own, write it well, know very much about my culture and values. i walk with my shoulders and head very high because i am Igbo. if you are Igbo reading this comment, be always PROUD of whom you are. do not let others define you. you are a high breed and that is why you are being talked (attacked) about with so many stereotypes.go about your daily struggles with pride.remember our fathers were forced to restart their lives with only 20 pounds after the government headed by Awolowo confiscated the millions in the banks at the break of war. they say you love money...tell them you work for what you earn..tell them to sleep on their beds and let manna fall for them...tell them that the names of published corrupt people (list) in Nigeria are not Igbos.

finally, if they tell you are Igbotic, tell them, "YES I AM AND VERY PROUD OF IT" DO NOT LET THE WAR BE FOUGHT AND WON ON YOU A SECOND TIME! to the younger Igbos...go and read about the Igbo history, ask your parents and grand parents pertinent questions, learn about your culture. thanks.

The sage said...

Funny thing I've noticed here is that every time an ibo commenter is abused, he or she naturally thinks it must be a yoruba person, and vice versa.

Most are oblivious of the other numerous ethnic groups who may not be in love with the ibos or yorubas. Or indeed commenters from other countries who consider our bickering, their source of entertainment.

My grouse is more with the foreigners who meddle negatively in our business. Am sure ibos won't be too offended if they are called igbotic by Nigerians, like they would be if called so by a foreigner, but the latter I feel is more the case here.

Linda should indicate locations of all foreign or any seemingly naughty comments. Am sure it will help reduce the repeated slandering.

Am yoruba, and I'm aware of the reservations we have for each other. The fact that its not an everyday arguement in our lives means that those that highlight our differences do so, whether rightly or wrongly, for their own agenda.

Anonymous said...

I am ibo and use the term when referring to people who are...well...Igbotic. It doesn't offend me when people use it. It is what it is. I refer to bush Yoruba people as "very Yoruba". Igbotic just rolls of the tongue that's why I think anyone would use it. Don't be offended ok?

Every tribe in Nigeria has its own vices, thats what makes them unique. As long as it doesn't infringe on another's fundamental rights, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being one of the "..tics" as you put it. French, Italian, Chinese and Mexican pp all have accents that belies their country of origin. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Nigerians should try and be proud of where they come from. When people ask me where i come from i always respond 'i'm Nigerian and that's what counts'.

igbo people are igbotic because they are "nna men". As for the love of money its very true and they are STINGY! Yorubas share, hausas share but if an igbo person shares with you, think twice because you will pay it back.

The problem my friend is that ur more combustive and reactive - in a social sense. ( If we're talking religion, the pendulum should swiftly swing north). Ibos naturally give as much as they get.

The fact that they are the most travelled means that those traits may sometimes be noticed by their hosts and sometimes seen as effrontery

Nope...Hausa's are called MALA which they consider very derogatory.

I just think this "hate" towards igbo ppl dates back to the civil war, I did history in high sch, so I knw a bit.
Igbo ppl wasnted the south-east and a large part of the south-south to themselves, and that is where most of our resources r. I think this is the reason other tribes percieve them as money-loving or over-ambitious.
Another reason is, igbo women could be percieved as more "attractive" cus of fair skin and all.
But then other tribes are also discriminated for other diff reasons.
It just boils down to us loving ourselves, we all have differences in beliefs nd cultures, let's embrace those diff and let smth +ve come out of them.

But why are we so tribalistic. The person is not trying to insult any other tribe. the person is just saying that being "Igbotic" should not be used derogatorily because that is the essence of ones self as being from that tribe. If you are Igbo what is wrong with sounding or looking like one? Its like saying the Chinese are too "chinaish" or an Arab is too "Arabic"... That's why the white man calls us savages or bush people and we start feeling bad and try to be more like them...

i just think it's wen igbo people try to feel funky with themselves. like they show off and their razzness is called igbotic. but if yoruba or hausa people do it, they're called razz or local. i guess because igbos do not usually live in igboland igbo land most of the time, and then they try to fit in and prove themselves, hence IGBOTIC. I am igbo and proud but i think this is the reason, and i even call other people igbotic aka uche jombo.

I know many igbos who speak their language, go to the east at christmas etc, but are not igbotic.
Igboticness is mainly in the accent, which is stronger than any other accent apart fron calabar, plus the habit of speaking igbo even when in company of non igbos, loud harsh voices etc. (E.g Most people you meet in the BRT from Marina to Festac)

Of course their are equivalents for other tribes... aboki, warfi etc. When i was in school in ondo state, calling someone Akure girl was a insult in the same sense as igbotic.... So don't take it too personal.

adukeologe(clickme) said...

i expect it's because igbo's can be told from a distance, from their head shapes, and in some cases their build (not necessarily a bad thing) etc and the fact that they will hardly speak a complete sentence in english before inserting their native tongue. having said this, yoruba's are usually the ones the term 'razz' is used for so often. i used to have such bad perception of the igbos until i actually started associating with them. their men can be sensible unlike many yoruba men.

I think a lot of Igbo people that live in Lagos act as if they are ashamed of themselves. They change their names and avoid speaking their language at all cost but always want to show how well they speak ijinle Yoruba. I think it goes back generations because even Igbo "traditional" clothing was borrowed from the white man and so many adopted names like Collins and Douglas.
Yoruba and Hausa don't play with their culture and will fight anybody who try's. Igbo will be the first person to call someone igbotik and half of the girls swear they will never marry an Igbo man.
A commenter on Bellanaija told an Igbo girl to " shut up because she is a razz Igbo girl who knows nothing about style" as a Yoruba person even I was offended but Bella who is Igbo was happy to post the comment.

when a spanish man speaks people recognise his acent and call him spanish man, same applies to german /italian man, even south americans.

When an English man speaks people say his english, wales speak people say they are too fast, my people dont let what happen to wales happen to us, today i bet 80/90% of you dont know in uk wales have their own original language,

i wish our language could stand the taste of time but unfortunately we have been robbed of our right right from time.

in every way people want the identity igbo to be forgotten, dont even doubt it.

but this same people is not just about nigeria or igbotic, an English man i mean a man who mum n dad her of england origin, not scotish ohh. will never agree any other person.

first what nigerians speak is not and will never be british english, why call igbo people igbotic?

uk we have different accent. people in england speak different from people in wales n so on.

England has so many accent alone, lets use london or example, north london accent is different from south london, and east london.

ask anyone is just like igbo, delta igbo, ebony igbo, enugu igno, anambra, imo, and ikwere.

we should be proud of our self.

Its usually Igbo people tha use that phrase to express disdain to fellow igbos. The Phrase has nothing to do with cultural references but more of an expression of timidity and bushness. I see nothing wrong with it except when someone from another tribe calls an Igbo person that then it becomes tribal profiling. Its like a black man being able to say the N word but its forbidden for others to do the same.

I AGREE WITH YEMISI A 100% COS I DO CALL MYSELF AN IGBOTIC GIRL N WHILE GROWING UP MY SIBILINGS SEES ME AS IGBOTIC COS I DON'T CARE ABOUT MY DRESSING, CARRIAGE N EVERYTHING, FOR ME AM DOWN TO EARTH N TOO SIMPLE TO THE EXTENT THEY DON'T LIKE COS I WAS NOT FLASH OR SHOW CASE OUR PARENTS WEALTH.AND ON MANY OCCASSIONS MY FRIENDS/MATES DO CALL ME IGBOTIC N SAID TINS LIKE IF WE ARE IN UR SHOE OR U LL SEE, EVEN NOW AS A MARRIED WOMAN MOST PEOPLE STILL SEEM LIKE THAT COS I LL TELL THEM THAT I CAN'T EAT ANYTIN DAT IS NOT OUR LOCAL IGBO FOOD SINCE MY DAYS ABROAD I HAVE NOT TASTED THE WHITE MAN'S FOOD, I CAN'T EAT CHINESE, ITALIAN, FRENCH ETC FOOD,TO CUT THE LONG STORY SHORT I EAT ONLY HOME MADE FOOD, SO THEY SEE MY ATTITUDE TO BE IGBOTIC. FOR IT'S NOT OFFENSIVE AT COS I KNOW THE CONTEXT THEY WILL USE IT.

FINALLY, POINT OF CORRECTION FOR THOSE OF U THAT SAID IT HAS TO DO WITH IGBO'S GREED OR WHATEVER ARE 100% WRONG COS HERE IN THE WESTERN NATION WHERE WE LIVE AND WORK WE STILL REFER TO MOST OYIBO, AMERICANS ETC AS IBOTICS, COS U WILL SEE THE IGBOTIC ONES AMONG THEM SO IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IGBO'S AS TRIBE I HAVE COUSINES THAT HAVE LIVED IN ITALY FOR ALMOST 10 YEARS WHEN THEY CAME TO NIGERIA 4 THEIR GRAND PA'S BURIAL THEY WERE SPEAKING THEI NATIVE IGBO DIALECT WHICH MOST OF US THAT ARE IN UNI THEN CANNOT DO SOME OF US SAID THEY ARE IGBOTIC

the picture is so confusing, i thought the question was going to be about why nigerians like to make people wear uniforms (matching outfits by a group) to their functions...weddings, funerals o e no matter, aso ebi must dey even if at times the celebrant picks the ugliest colors or fabrics. i can't stand it!

ANYWAY back to the igbotic/non igbotic no yorubastic/hausastic comments -

this doesn't only exist for the igbo people, like someone has already mentioned, there are ones for other tribes even if it's not in pidgin, it might exist in native dialect. i find that when people use the word igbotic, it refers to how an igbo person speaks and acts, that is, trying to use fone with heavily accented english and being loud/showy and full of him/herself.

there may not be a word for the yorubas but they have their own stereotypes as do all the rest of the tribes but i think the igbos' stereotypes stands out because igbos are many and therefore more visible.

i don't know who the person is who said Hausa people are sophisticated, na who sey? I laugh in Sanskrit...sophisticated Hausa? LOL. I can agree their language has a beautiful sound but I would NEVER apply the words sophisticated to them as a people...these are people who still wash their behinds with water instead of using toilet paper? People I have seen wash their feet in the bathroom sink? People who do not educate their children beyond koran school? People who marry off 12 year olds? People who can sit in one spot covered in flies and don't bother to swat it? Abeg, they may be SOME but let's not cast the word on ALL.

we nigerians have a long way to go why do we keep using the term 'tribe'? the last time i checked i noticed that we are not living in a remote forest with spears and cattle and jumping up and down like feeble minded people. Lets stop amusing the white man and get serious we are ethnic groups like the scottish, welsh, irish and english. We are not 'TRIBES'.

We had our civil war between 1967-1970 many lives were lost particularly on the Biafran side consequently by the starvation and ammunition supplies from the US and UK who only cared about the oil in the east and they knew Ojukwu would give them a run for their money so they resorted to support Nigeria.

If you have a brain then you would know who our real enemy is .please Can we all grow up and stop belittling ourselves. Naija people stand up as one and lets kick these western devils in the ass like the japanese and chinese are doing nuff said!!

I find it strange that some ppl r saying that it is a tribal topic, no its not. It is a fact of life that some Igbos are referred to as Igbotic or Jew men because of their appearance, manners and the way they talk. This is arrant nonsense. First of all, Igbo ppl that were born in Lagos for instance prefer to speak Yoruba, or are inclined to talk English with the Lagos Phoneee, even blend in with the Yorubas becos of what I call, cultural inferiority complex imposed on the Igbos after we lost the civil war.
This trend has even been carried over to our university campuses. The irony of it all is that the Igbos are the most enterprising human beings I have ever seen in my life, they call them the Jews of Africa. They are very industrious people, but extremely selfish and greedy! I live right here in Houston texas, all my buddies who are igbos have a Masters or PhD's including their wives. Again I see Chinese ppl ,Russians, and ppl frm all over the world freely communicating in their local dialect with relative ease. They are not ashamed to speak their tribal language in America at all. When some of my Igbo friends open their mouth here, u will think they were born right here in the U.S. and igbo ppl do not like to speak in their dialect except when they attend our local meetings.
The independence of the Igbo man and his beleif that a good education reflects in the way u speak English is what is causing this cultural inferiority complex.
The Yorubas I saw in London when I went for the olympics were blabbing away in their dialect and so noisy too, no qualms. So the Igbos need to imbibe in their children to be proud of their race and language. That is a the starting point.I met some igbo girls in Lagos last yr when I visited and I asked them where they were frm and they said Owerri, in Imo state. I said where precisely in Owerri and they were like where do u know? Then one of them said We r frm Orlu, then I got really mad and told them that Orlu and Owerri are not the same cities. Again u meet an igbo person frm Uzuakoli and u ask him where he is frm and he will say Umuahia! These r two different places. The reason they mention these major cities when u ask them were they are frm,is cos of the lack of self pride in the villages they come from and at the back of their mind, they dont want u to look at them as bush ppl. That is wrong!!!. Some Igbo ppl claim they r even from Lagos!!Igbos need to learn to be proud of their heritage and stop rubbing off on the yorubas or other tribes to feel a sense of belonging. This is especially true of the younger generation! As for me I AM PROUDLY IGBO. PHD COMPUTER SCIENCE!! NO BE BEANS!!!

for starters am igbo. this topic is sha tiring bt the thing is it depends on the person whose calling another person igbotic and also the person who is being called their mindset and environment. you cant expect a well trained or learned person to come out and say that guy is igbotic, its only people who r mayb frustrated in life n dont hv anything else to do rather than to peek into peoples lifestyle that can say he's igbotic and on the other hand, you dont expect someone who jst recently came under civilization to pretend n start forming british accent, its only probably because he's somewhere where there is to b a universal language like english that he speaks his english with d igbo accent in it. supposing this person ws in his place speaking his igbo language can u say the person hs igbotic igbo accent? n bsyds we are nt supposed to judge others if not u'll end up contradicting yourself thereby making ur ownself guilty too, so if leave people the way they are. Nigeria is already facing worse problems and the worst thing that can happen to us at this tym is racism.

I am very sure if yorubas and hausas and the minorities start going to stay in the south east, they will see soo many terrible things and your way of life. Yorubas are untidy but the ibos smell a lot. In those days in delta state, we know an ibo man by his scent. Even during the civil war, the hausas were killing ibos through their scent....... Well we know the igbos are industrous, it is what they do and how they go about it, when u say work hard, you should also add by hook or by crook. Who said the igbos are the most educated. Lol! Apart from other countries, all the schools in america and london, most of the Nigerians there are yorubas. People are not scared of you, its just that yorubas or rather other tribes are very tolerant. When people correct u guys u say they are jealous of you. You need to respect your host community. If nigeria should break up again, na una go loose again, your wealth, ur businesses and assets are in lagos. Remember u guys don't have ocean, u will forever be dependent on porthacourt and lagos to collect your goods! Go to ogun state and ibadan and see how ibos full there, not to talk of the south -south and north. But if every tribe is hating on you, don't u think there is somthing wrong? Many reasons why other tribes hate ibos,
Number 1: you people are soo loud and Crude.
Number 2: you people are too domineering. If they give u small chance, u want to take over everything, that's why the south-south hates u.
Number 3: you people are soo soo tribalistic. Its unbearable. The fact that u stay in a host community and all u do is insult the people of that community. Its terrible! I keep saying it, if u live and work in lagos, and all u do is insult yorubas, na molue go kill u
Number 4: what an igbo man will do for money.... Lord have mercy! That's what other tribes use against you! What u do to yourselves is crazy! Igbos are the most un-united tribe in Nigeria. U people never stand wiv one voice. Even if today u guys break away, u will be surprised that anambra will say they want to be on their own! Just watch
Number 5. You people are soo fucking proud. Again, lord have mercy. U always think u are the best. Very ethnocentric. It all boils down to money! Money doesn't mean u are better than anybody! Money does not remove illiteracy.
Number 6, you people have no respect what so ever for anybody. Not even ur parents. I don't blame u, ur parents send u to go and slave for an uncle in lagos instead of taking you to school. When such a kid becomes rich, how do u expect that child to respect their parents or anybody. When the parents neglected the child from a young age.
Lastly I keep wondering why u people place soo much emphasies on LIGHT SKIN, it seems been dark skin means dirty to you people. when my mum was getting married to my dad. Mind u am from delta. Her igbo friend told her that, why would my mum, a dark skinned woman go and marry a dark skinned man? Am talking about 35 years ago. And most igbos in my area, the couples are never ever ever ever 2 dark skinned people. One must be fair sha! Is it a crime to be black, does black equals dirtyness. I think u people are your own enemy. Nobody marginalises u people. You are your own problem. You guys need total re-orientation. Number one. Start by RESPECTING people. You are not above your host community. You are at the mercy of your host community. If people who are not Nigerians no about igbos and your ways then there is something wrong somewhere. If u think am lying go to china, germany, japan, indonesia. Its for real! Dont even mention america or london. Go to youtube and watch the crimes commited by nigerians and peoples comments. U will weep. Look at the statistics, all the countries where there are nigerian prisoners 80%, are igbos. Some names were published in the papers. I mean why won't people keep hating on you! Abeg all this wahala is not peculiar to Naija....if you like scream and defend your tribe till you pop a blood vessel...Tribalism and Racism is innate in the human mind...we are always looking for ways to be better than the next person....I am a Yoruba girl....Funniest thing happened when my H factor reared its 'ugly' head in Chinese Mandarin class,hahaha...Na my mouth I gatz take explain to them that people who speak my language tend to put an H before words that start with vowels subconsciously....I wasn't ashamed one bit...in fact it made me unique, and

You should check out accent/culture wars in America, Among the Hispanics (being called Mexican is even deemed an insult o), Carribeans, Even the British and the Scotts....

If igbos and Yoruba people dislike each other so much, what is the future for nigeria. Sad story. I have few Igbo friends but I don't trust them cos when dey re with their people u feel left out and they can sell u cos there desperation for money. Igbo people re extremely tribalistic and it is sad but that d world we live in. Let them keep rocking their ugly shoes. Even an Igbo friend told me ''where u see this Igbo shoe' cos I wore and old knock abt out. Funny and delusional people, that y dey can never be president.

Igbos must get over this victim mentality. All tribes are called various names and are insulted. And this is a very divisive topic.

i'm Yoruba but from all my interactions with people from different tribes and ethnicities....the fiercest tribal prejudice is exhibited by Ibos and Yorubas alike.

So what's ur problem? be anything '...tic'.

the chinese or lebanese or oda non english countries, when they speak, nobody sees it as unusual. then in naija, if someone speaks english with his mother tongue assent, its called razz, why not call people who learn to speak oda countries assent as razz. i believe we should learn to embrace our culture in what ever we do. cos no matter when u go in life or what possition u reach, u will always and forever be a yoruba, igbo or hausa person. dos dat call is razz r people with serious inferiority issues dat they think they have to speak or act a certain way to be accepted by society.

i dont think its only ibo people that are labelled igbotic, the word 'razz' is usually synonymous with yoruba people, so i dont think there is any tribalism involved..hipsy

"There are more ibotic people than yorubatic people"? Yh right. I'm not Ibo but that shit just pisses me off. Was at a friend's wedding on saturday(Ibo girl) getting married to an Ibo guy and I had 3 yoruba friends around me and they kept saying stuff like "GOSH THIS WEDDING IS SO IBOTIC". Wouldn't it have been weird if it was yorubatic. KSA and Shina Peters playing all thru at their weddings is cool, but Ibos do same with their own music and its yorubatic. So disgusting. Tribalism in this country is such a shame. WE SHOULD ALL BE PROUD OF OUR INDIVIDUAL CULTURES AND RESPECT AND ADMIRE OTHERS ALSO.

If truth must be told, it is only the Igbo who were not affected by outside cultural influences before the coming of the European. Hausa culture was "Arabicalised" while Yoruba culture had a lot of influences from Benin Republic, Ghana and Togo. Igbos are the only tribe among the majors that is indigenous to Nigeria. You find Hausas and Fulanis and Yorubas in other West African countries. Herein lies the root of the concept Igbotic or what culture advocates will call Negritude. The attitude of being true to ones culture and values.

I'm very disappointed in how unexposed some of these readers sound. Forums like this are open for such discussions. Linda doesn't have to take it down just 'cos you find it uncomfortable. You don't have to be rude about leaving a comment. It was/is a rather interesting statement. Funny enough, the word "igbotic" may have even originated from the Igbos: a word to degrade certain types of Igbos. Either way, each person in life must learn to be himself or herself. What would the world be like if everyone started ACTING so Western...

I'm not sure exactly why but this site is loading extremely slow for
me. Is anyone else having this problem or is it a issue on my end?
I'll check back later on and see if the problem still exists.
