NBA declares state of emergency over the arrest of some judges in Abuja, other states

The Leadership of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, has declared a state of emergency on the judiciary following the arrest of some judges by agents of the State Security Service in the early hours of today October 8th.

At a press briefing which had in attendance past NBA presidents like Olisa Agbakoba, Wole Olanikpekun and others, the President of the NBA, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN) decried the manner in which the judges and their family members were manhandled and arrested by the security agents who claim the judges were arrested over their involvement in "corrupt practices". He called for the immediate release of the arrested judges and their family members.

“I want to emphasise again that we are not under military rule and we cannot accept this unholy event and Gestapo-style operation. We, therefore, call on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately caution all the state security agencies and to respect the rule of law and to respect due process. Any issues affecting the judicial officers, there are established procedures for handling them and we demand that this constitutional process must be obeyed. Given the unfolding nature of the event and the seriousness of the situation, the NBA hereby declares a state of emergency as it affects the affairs of the judiciary and I hereby constitute a crisis management team, comprising all past presidents of the association. I want to, on behalf of the association, make the very following clear and unequivocal demands: we demand the immediate and unconditional release of all the judges abducted from about 9pm yesterday. The release must be done immediately and without any conditions. Two, we demand that the Department of State Services should limit itself to its statutory and constitutional responsibilities. I’ll be meeting with the CJN later tonight or tomorrow. There will be consequences should these demands are not met.”he said

It is sad how fast democracy has been eroded in the last one year to say the least. If Judges are treated this way what is the hope of justice for the common man? If a judge or judges are alleged to be involved in corrupt practices, the sensible way it’s done in other democracies e.g. Ghana, is to follow the provision of the constitution and deal with the matter.
This barbaric arrests make mockery of whatever the government is trying to achieve with its anti corruption drive.
It’s a shame!

Arresting people is no big deal, but do it in a civilized manner, imagine the poor statement released by the DSS, it shows the poriousity of brain we have there, this is not 1978, this is 2016. Their actions seemed like those of kidnappers, which should not be any where near the highly respected DSS. It's a pity, there was country, this commando style of arresting judges, won't help issues, it just compounded their problem. Those guys knows their right.

...and why hasn't the DSS or even EFCC done anything over the serious allegation brought against the leadership of the house of reps. Why are they so selective in this fight against corruption? I just don't get it.

Are judges above the law? Rubbish...even in the US judges are arrested when found wanting so what's the big deal. Has the NJC commented yet? So why all this busy bodies...continue to complain on this blog & lets see what it will change! Besides all u people here didnt vote the APC in 2015 & they won, I dont see how all this comments will stop its victory in 2019. They did it without the south east & south-south in 2015, trust me they'll do it again in 2019. This is a fact, stop feeling important here

Sir, do you have a conscience at all? Even if you also know you benefit from the same corruption, where is your sense of shame? Let's even assume that we agree the mode of arrest was unconstitutional, did you not even exercise caution as to your declarations considering your colleagues may be guilty of these crimes? Do you not know the gravity of the effects of this corruption ? You let people who rob a whole nation dry walk free, you demoralize and oppress the less privileged by denying them justice and you go about like everything is well. Do you really believe in God at all? Do you fear Him? Do you think He will not judge you? Look many of you think you can get on your kneeds and weep before God to forgive your atrocities. Don't worry time will tell. This life is not forever, it is very short. The lucky ones are the ones who Karma gets before they die. Repent and humble yourselves before man and God!

Nigerians, why are most of dumb. As any of those arrested claim they innocent. Mention onepls. Starting from dasuki and the rest. Including the recent judges. When a lawyer was killed in pH, NBA did not say a word. When God was punishing Pharoh, he simple ask the Israelites to put blood at their door post to exclude themselves. So, if you have not stolen relax and go abt ur normal business, abi u want to die for them.

Bashir I second your comment! Let justice be justice, Pres. Buhari has legitimised his mandate. He was elected to fight corruption and that's what he's doing.
