Buhari speaks on his recent appointments, says he chose people who have been loyal to him

People who are loyal to you or people who can do the job? Just asking, what do I know? President Buhari yesterday broke his silence on the recent appointments he made which has been described as lopsided. In an interview with BBC Hausa which was translated by Daily Trust, President Buahri said he chose people that have been loyal and steadfast with him right from his days in APP, CPC and then APC.

"This is the nature of Nigerian politics. If they will do justice to me, as an elected Nigerian president, let them look at the Constitution a Nigerian president works with, there are people who will closely work with me that don’t need to be taken to the Senate. If I select people whom I know quite well in my political party, whom we came all the way right from the APP, CPC and APC, and have remained together in good or bad situation, the people I have confidence in and I can trust them with any post, will that amount to anything wrong? I have been with them throughout our trying times, what then is the reward of such dedication and suffering? They did not defect because of positions, they did not involve themselves in the pursuit of personal gains, and they accepted their fate throughout our trying moments. What is wrong if I make you the secretary (of the federal government) because I have confidence that things will go normal?”he said
On the Chibok girls, Buhari said
"They have scattered them, and are being guarded at dispersed locations. Most of the girls are Christians and were forced to embrace Islam. And the sect’s cruel leaders have married some of the girls, obviously against their wish. Others have been left to practice their religion but their condition could hardly be ascertained. Both ground and air security personnel in the Sambisa forest could spot where the girls are, but since the insurgents have also kidnapped housewives and other women, no one could say whether they mixed them or how they dispersed them. But efforts are being intensified and as people know, the three neighboring governments of Cameroon, Chad, and Niger are helping us since these suicide bombers are now going to their areas and detonating the bombs in mosques and other places"he said
On his yet to be released ministerial list, Buhari said those who have held government positions before and were involved in unwholesome practices knowingly or unknowingly will not be invited. He said those who have held such positions before or tried to maintain accountability will be considered for appointment
"There are people that deserve to hold the position because of their knowledge in either financial issues, or oil sector or even in governance. But you discover that in one way or the other, and whether they knew it or not, they were dragged to such unwholesome practices. Bringing such people will be tantamount to leaving your doors open when you have gone to rest in your apartment. Putting such people in either financial, petrol or works ministry would be dangerous because behind the scene, some people control a person. They would be dictating to them with a threat to award them contracts. This is the most frightening thing that Nigerians must understand. You need to get people who held similar post before or tried to maintain accountability"he said.

Linda in African politics, loyalty & trust plays a vital role in handpicking people to work it.And so is ability to do the job.GEJ for instance failed not because he was a bad man,No.Most of the people that surrounded him weren't loyal. They pretend to be,but behind him, they plot against him.Its never easy for a sitting president to lose election. This is coz its expected that he has the power to get anything in his favour. But sometimes you can't buy loyalty no matter how rich you are .
God knows each & everyone of us will do same if we find ourselves in his position.People around you especially in Nigerian politics make or Mar ones administration. Make no mistake about that!

@Juliet....since you can't see beyond your nose, lemme break it down for you. This peeps are loyal to buhari and not to nigeria...they are automatic wax in his hands to be shaped as he wants. In other words, our INEC chairwoman who took over from jega is also 'loyal' to him. So i guess it's safe to say our next president will be a product of dinner table discussion.
Well, it's better to pass through things like this before our eyes open. Lemme just keep shut.

It is now crystal clear that it is only people in his political cabal that he would appoint as ministers. This is just d beginning of SHOCKER for Nigerians. Expect 90% northerners, 10% southerners. He will only appoint persons he knows personally. Sai buhari

Yea. I think from his interview, Fashola and Amechi may get nothing until they sort themselves out with ICPC and EFCC.
I just gained a whole lot of respect for Buhari, I believe if he sorrounds himself with people he can trust, his fight against corruption may just turn out successful.

Jonathan lost the elections because he failed woefully. It wasnt an igbo, south-south, south-west or hausa elections. it was a Nigerian election. Get over it!!!!Buhari is now our President and all he needs is our collective prayers. A holistic analysis of his comments shows that he has only appointed people he can trust with positions. Why twist his words or play semanticist games.

fellow country men lets reason like enlightened pple. The love we have for Buhari and his integrity should not plunge us into blindness that we will fail to decry his misdeeds. B4 now the word "merit" was being sung as song by his die-hard supporters which gave him justification 4 his lopsided appointments. But now we have started singing loyalty and trust again, relegating the no 1 ingredient- merit. This is quite absurd, appalling, unethical, undemocratic and nonsensical of him.
Lets rise up and stop GOD-FATHERISM syndrome which is what is undermining good governance in Nigeria

The daftness exhibited on this blog is sometimes disheartening. Linda, I know u are Igbo and naturally feel some sort of bias. But ask yourself honestly if u would appoint people u don't know to work with you closely in very sensitive positions. I am not talking about ministers or heads of parastatals. I am talking about chief of staff, secretary to the federal govt, etc. Only a mad person would not reserve such positions for people who are totally loyal and reliable. Would an Igbo president appoint an Hausa man who is not known to him,as chief of staff or head of service? Please let's put sentiments aside and be objectively realistic.

Thetruth said...

U are the one daft. Do you run government with people just because they are your relatives or who can do the job. Is the change you preach only about your friends? That is laziness. Nigeria is a federation and you must seek carefully, technocrats from all its people and you then make your change based on the view of each federating unit in Nigeria. If I perceive that you hate me, is there anything you can do that will interest me? Instead I will work for you to fail. So trust is the first thing the president should seek so as to involve all in the change mandate. If tinubu did not trust him, would he have dragged Yoruba into his alliance. From trust, support will follow and the change will be properly executed.
