Governor Ambode set to launch people friendly traffic regime

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode is set to drastically change the face of Lagos traffic by introducing a world class traffic information and management system.

The globally tested traffic system which has worked for many cities similar to Lagos is set to have caught the eye of Governor Ambode who wants to see Lagosians spend less hours in traffic and more in their offices and at work.

In the next few weeks, the governor will work with some experts to design a system that fits the Lagos traffic pattern. Today, Lagos is home to some of the worst traffic congestion in the world.

Traffic congestion is a daily challenge with highly undesirable socioeconomic and environmental effects, increasing stress and pollution levels and reducing overall productivity. A sustainable solution is required to urgently decongest black spots such as Third Mainland Bridge, Abule Egba and Dopemu.

The state will introduce a world class traffic information and management system. A smart network comprising of hundreds of cameras, road sensors and electronic displays have been specially designed to collect and deliver real time information to city commuters that will help regulate traffic.

Highly visible displays and a mobile phone application will flag highly congested hotspots, suggest alternative routes and estimate arrival times - all in real time. Information is power.

By empowering Lagosians with more traffic information ahead of time, the state government are confident of reducing the time spent in traffic, drastically improving each commuter’s quality of life and improving the city’s productivity as a whole. In big cities of the world, traffic information systems have helped improve traffic flow to a large percentage.

Governor Ambode since he took over has spent more time trying to solve the Apapa traffic conundrum and other traffic related problems in Lagos.

Ok... I hear that! my concern now is; whatever happened to the other cameras that were installed to monitor traffic and crime? I still believe strongly that the ODD/EVEN system to allowing vehicles ply the roads will help manage traffic in the city. Also look for means to regulate inflow of "new" vehicles and we will be good.

If this works then we will forever be endeared to Ambode and please can someone ask Wike to continue with the road projects Amechi started? abi is this a punishment Rivers state residents have to endure simply because the state changed party? Woji traffic is at an all time high and the completion of Garrison-Elelewon road would be very helpful if we hope to get a solution

How would the common man that has no basic knowledge of how to utilize technology integrate with such elaborate systems in such a such space of time...they need to really look into change management as well to ensure this works. I really do hope it does. Kudos!!

It won't work here in lag my dear gov. Use it in ur sitting room and repair our roads, give time to trailers and tanker drivers when their can drive. Maybe like from 6pm to 5 am. With this the traffic in lag can be reduced in a way. Engr Emy

The best and fastest way is getting the LIGHT RAIL working. That way many people wont be driving all the time because the light rail is faster, more convenient and economical.

My friend in London would leave his car at home and asked that we join train. You'll get to work looking clean and not worn out.

Same thing goes to Abuja where I'm based, the train must be fix. that way Nyanya-Mararaba to Masaka people can come to work early and also the Kubwa-SUleja folks. These should be on the top priorities of the government

as much as dis sounds intresting,,,i doubt it's gonna work in lagos..
lagos is d only big city i ve seen dat it widest road cn only take 3 cars confortably at a time..there is wat we call rush hour traffic in every major city n as far as i'm concerned no amount of info tech used can work witout d basic tins being don,,,look for a way to widen or construct altanative routs or means of transportation b4 u talk of using technology!

zicog said...

after all most causes of traffic in lagos is mismanagement of roads rather dan laws

Unknown said...

Its a welcome idea, pls let him hasten up

Unknown said...

all this is not the solution to this traffic problems. they should look for ways of repairing all bad roads and gutters. then we will experience no more holdup and the rest

Unknown said...

Thumb up #Lobatan

There should be a forth mainland bridge that will take people from the Island to Ikorodu, that will decongest 3rd mainland bridge. The solution is to look for a way to create alternative roads. Camera et all will not solve the issues. Except we want to start another elephant project.

He surpass his predecessor. Thatz what God revealed to me this 1st day of July 2015.

nunulicious said...

odd and even number plate movement is a plausible short term solution. what we really need is the use of rail, water and cable cars. till those come into play, any solution you profer is a joke! shikena

AMBODE will score more goals than Fashola based on the revelation i caught this 1st day of July 2015

Ambode without his office camouflage looks like a semi-retired area boy or tout at a bus garage somewhere in Ibadan. He looks like an olodo (mumu / dumbo) that can't speak proper English. See his fat head.

I bet he likes his ewedu soup, scarily very dark amala, cow skin and oxtail and Guinness from Iya Shakirat's food joint.

I bet Ambode thinks about food all day, and can't wait to get home, and demolish a big, big alter of very dark amala. If Ambode was a member of the National Assembly, I bet he'd demand FOOD ALLOWANCE, instead of clothing allowance.

If there was an earth movement in Lagos, that would be because Ambode is out and about in that area of Lagos where the ground is shaking grade, griiiiiiii, grace, griiiiii.

Moses put out his rod and the sea divided into two. Ambode jumped into a swimming pool, and the water divided into four.

On a serious note, let me help Ambode. Here's how to solve traffic problem in Lagos:

(1) Slim / thin people can travel Monday to Sunday.

(2) Fat / Large people can travel only when they hear the ice cream van outside their front gate.

Good. He should look at Lekki Epe axis as the route is messed up

Ambode... now I know you have a plan. This is the most stupid idea. We have gidi traffic and the radio stations to do this.

What you should be planning for are cross overhead bridges, a more comfortable and systematic transportation system.

Build a bridge from ikorodu to island... etc... don't waste public fund on this crap

Cable cars cnt work in lagos setting with power line all over, d major road are bad while the alternate road are worst, in as much as I see ur ideal as good I think we shd be thinking of flyover, it will do us a whole lot of good.

Anonymous said...

Thank you o. What we need are overhead bridges, expansion of roads and construction of more roads. Lagos is a fast developing city with new people trooping in on a daily basis. We need structures not this academic proposal...

Anonymous said...

Is electricity/power supply a constant feature in Lagos yet? It seems most of these new updates will need to be utilized and maintained thru power connectivity. So, can citizens get uninterrupted electricity for homes and businesses first? Otherwise, this is another smoke-screen to skim off from the public purse and a project that's dead on arrival.

Omg!!! I haven't laughed this hard in ages. Anon u sure are a real nutcase!!! Hahahaha lwkmd ooo....

i wonder how these people manage information technology,i think there are traffic apps e.g www.tsaboin.com (has cameras) , giditraffic etc built by Nigerians, tested and working fine...why not just finance such projects before google comes to buy them off..you talked about improvement and sustenance.. but is this what we voted you for?Look for local and raw talents ..improve them and sustain them..collaborate with them and concentrate on making them in turn give the city a whole new dimension...you will receive credit for it rather than bring in foreigners that will embark on failed projects like the cctv all over again!!!
IT'S JUST THE SAD TRUTH!!!

Anonymous said...

Gov Ambode shld considering working with other traffic solutions out there such as GidiTraffic, Traffic Lite Social GPS & Maps, TrafficCHIEF, TrafficButter etc to improve results...

Anonymous said...

giditraffic, mytrafficlite.com does something similar.

I guess m more interested in this late comments...especially TSABOIN who has really invested much in fixing cameras on our roads. Is HE trying to work wf dem or relegating der efforts? Wf no doubt, m enjoying der services @ Tsaboin traffic talk, more @ www.tsaboin.com though. I'm impressed wf d idea buh he shud try and work wf all dis traffic channels, encourage and support dem.

Sojest said...

First thing to do is create more roads, rails, and water transport system before working on traffic system, traffic system wont work with d kind of disorganized road network we have.

Anonymous said...

He can start by fixing roads and making sure buses pick up passengers in assigned spots. That'll help a lot
