Photos/story from Jim Nwobodo's son's burial

Got this from a LIB reader. Some stories are better told from the horses' mouth...:-). Read below..
"I am an LIB reader and also belong to same club with Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo, the first son of Chief Jim Nwobodo of the old Eastern Anambra State's governor. We attended the burial of Ifeanyichukwu today being 5th of Dec but the corpse was no where to be found. Information getting to us was that the father refused that the first son's corpse will not buried in his so so large compound, which made the direct siblings of Ifeanyi hijack his corpse pending when the father agrees the corpse be buried in his so so so large compound. We have all deserted the premises. Not even the presence of Chief Ekwueme, Peter Obi and Sen. Ngige and other prominent people could change Chief Jim Nwobodo's mind. It was terrible." See pics after the cut...

Arrant nonsense. You mentioned Dr Alex Ekwueme and Mr. Peter Obi but did not mention your name. Your story is disjointed. At 43 a man should have his own home including wife and children. Why bury him in his father's compound. You are a funeral undertaker following corpses around.

Why should his corpse be buried in his father's so so so big compound?! For what? Because he was the first son? So in even in death, he wants to share property?! But more importantly, it is NEVER done! So his father should wake up every morning and view his son's grave, abi? Traditionally, you don't bury a son in his father's compound when the father is still alive!

Anonymous said...

As the first son, the father's country home is his birth right so he's not expected to build another house in the same village except he wishes to.

Anonymous said...

That's my village.. And that is not the tradition there. It is sooooo done. That is why the siblings and aaall the elders in my village are protesting it. He's just a puppet doing the bidding of his young wife, who wants her own son who is the youngest of Nwobodo's four sons to inherit the compound. Now that is the one that is NEVER done. That's why she's going to try to kill them off one after another until only her son is left. Everyone knows she's vile.

No parent would want to wake up every morning to see the burial ground of his/her child, I think this may be the reason for him doing this, people do not do this (especially in Yoruba land), if the son has his own house then he should be buried there and if not he should be taken to cemetery.

Patricia his second wife has since hijacked Jim, this is a woman that gave every MD of the Savannah Bank wahala because she wanted to head the bank but her qualifications where limiting her, she was just a lawyer so should be only a GM but that was not enough for her.

She so caused so much hell in the bank that they were changing MD like wrapper every day.

My father and I went to see Jim about 10 years ago for a favour, he directed to his wife.

My dear, Patricia has scraped the man's brain.

My take.

I thought that the son at his age would have his own plot and premises. Maybe he was not a thief and did not accrue illgotten wealth that will allow him to be buried in the peace of his enclave. Its time for Nigerians around the corners of the country to start burying people at a cemetry.

Unknown said...

You are very right. People just comment without thinking about tradition. Where I come from, a father cannot be alive and his son who died before him be buried in his house. This computer about jet age is just making everybody think with their heads elsewhere.

I confirm this story.am frm amechi same village with the former governor. It was gathered that he will the compound to his second wife against the tradition of the people that first only only inherit the main compound. Thou ifeanyi lost that right bc he died b4 his pather. So the compound was suppose to be willed to his younger brother chisonwa. So as soon as the kins men learnt wat he did they hijack the corps

Some people just comment without considering certain things. The Igbo tradition for bits a father burning his first son or even any of his sons. Where I come from of a man's first son dies before the father, he must be buried outside the father's house. Chief Nwobodo is an Igbo chief who knows the tradition of the land. Most of Linda's commentators are fake Igbo and computer Igbo. Duke

Dr Adaeze said...

Read through the comments and I agree that Nwobodo brought the embarrassment upon himself. VERY SAD INDEED!
He went about it the very traditional way, which I want to explain well.

In many parts of the old Anambra state which includes present day Enugu state when the 1st son dies while his father is alive, he loses his place as the 1st son. This position goes on to the 2nd son. By burying him in that compound, you give the right to him.

Now the 2nd son can insist that he still wants his older brother buried somewhere in the compound. This appears to be what happened, but Jim still disagreed.

It also appears that Jim due to his disagreement with his ex wife Mukosolu, he wants to keep the main compound for 2nd wife Pat's son, who is the youngest of his sons. My guess is that he may be trying to do it where he gives Pat his main house, and by Igbo rights, the youngest son inherits his mother's property!

People asking why his son didnt build, dont understand the culture. While he was alive, the compound belonged to him, there was no need to build because thats how it goes in the village. In Igbo land, you dont see a 1st son getting a plot away from the main family compound, unless he is trying to build a house to suit his taste, wants one with more land. Some renovate the preexisting house, or tear it down completely.

Jim has succeeded in letting people know his true colours. This should have been settled before the burial!

For those saying cemeteries, In Igbo land, we dont do that either. It is only done when person is really young, unmarried, no children, divorced (so issues regarding where to bury), or if the person had conveyed such wishes or was buried abroad.

Igbo folks on here, ask your parents and grand parents and sadly the answer will be the same.
