Common questions people ask about fertility

A session with fertility specialists Dr Bina Vasan, MBBS, MS(Obstetrics &Gynecology) and Dr Vasan S.S, MBBS, DNB(Surgery), DNB(Urology). Two of the pioneers in the field of Andrology and Reproductive Medicine in India are visiting Nigeria on the 31st of July and 1st of August 2015 for a 2-day Reproductive Health/Fertility camp holding at Vedic Lifecare Hospital.

1.       How often should I have sex?
There is no definite frequency of sexual intercourse. It varies for each individual and their capacity and desire. However, if your frequency is less than once a month then it should warrant a consultation.

2.       How do I know whether I am fertile or not?
Normally a semen analysis should tell you about your fertility. But if you are not able to conceive naturally even after one year of regular sexual intercourse then it warrants a consultation.

3.       Is Infertility hereditary?
Not all infertility cases are hereditary. Only a minor proportion of infertile cases are hereditary   (about 5%). However if there is a family history of infertility and you are having difficulties in conception then its better you get assessed.

4.       Does the sex position really matter in conception?
Not really. As long as the male partner ejaculates into the vagina the position shouldn’t really matter.

5.       Does masturbation affect fertility in both Males and Females?
No. but excessive masturbation (masturbation addiction) might affect your sexual health due to various behavioral factors. Also excessive masturbation might sometimes lead to penile injuries causing erection problems.

6.       Does the size of the penis affect fertility because I have a really small one?
Size of the penis has no direct relationship with infertility. However if the penis is a micro penis (less than 3.5 inches when erect) you should get assessed for hypogonadism which can cause infertility.

7.       My issue is I get pregnant but within the 1st trimester I lose it?
You should get a detailed fertility assessment done. Sometimes DNA abnormalities in the sperm can cause such problems. There are many reasons in both males and females for this problem. However the issue can be resolved with appropriate investigations and treatment.

8.       I have done several abortions in the past my fear now is would I still be able to conceive?
Yes, you can still conceive with appropriate medical help.

9.       I have treated about 5 episodes of STDs do I still stand a chance?
Yes. But before that get your partner assessed for STD and also make sure you do not have residual STD. Get a fertility assessment done.

10.   I have used a lot of contraceptives and pills now I am finding it hard to conceive could that be the reason?
Not really. However OCPs may cause temporary alteration in menstrual cycles which is self limiting. But if you have not been able to conceive even after a long time of stopping OCPs it’s high time you get a consultation.

11.   I just did my semen analysis and I have a low sperm count, please help me out.
You should get assessed. The cause can be either a hormonal abnormality, testicular cause or a post testicular cause. Majority of these causes can be treated (medical or surgical).

12.   Really I know IVF is expensive and I have done 2 sessions of IVF and both have failed, I am really scared and confused of trying the 3rd time. Please where can I get help?
IVF is not 100% successful. The success rate depends on the experience and expertise of the doctor. There are always chances that you can have a successful next cycle. You can try an embryoscope and PGS. You can also meet with me at Vedic Lifecare Hospital, Block No 105, Plot 6, Olabanji Olajide Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos on the 31st of July and 1st of August 2015.
