Recently, footage from a camera phone has surfaced online about the dire circumstances that passengers suffered prior to take-off, on board an Arik Air flight from Lagos to New York; I was one of the passengers. For anyone who has not seen the footage, it’s available on Youtube and various News Websites and Blogs. However, for purposes of this write-up, I will recount what happened.
The flight was scheduled to take off at about 1150pm on March 31st, 2014. Boarding was completed on time, and all the passengers settled in their seats and prepared for the flight to begin. However, there seemed to be a delay in operations because although the ground crew had exited the aircraft and the cabin doors were shut, we weren’t moving. The pilot announced that there was a small delay in the ground crew operations on the plane, and that we should be patient as the flight would depart “in a few minutes”.
The problem was, the air conditioning was not turned on.
Midnight soon passed, and there was still no A/C, neither did it feel like we
were going anywhere, anytime soon. Passengers were vigorously fanning
themselves, asking for water and ice from the Crew, and doing whatever they
could to stay cool and hydrated. The reality was that the heat in the plane was
quite frankly unbearable. It’s hot
enough in Nigeria these days, and then you couple that with a cabin whose doors
have been shut, and a bunch of people locked inside that enclosed space…
suffice it to say it escalated from bad to worse very quickly. The Captain made another announcement about
how he’s “sorry for the delay, but it was due to the ground operations”, and
that there was only one engine on and that was why the A/C could not be turned
on yet. By now it was well past 12:30 and people were becoming extremely
frustrated. Parents had begun taking the clothes off their children, children
were crying, one lady looked like she would faint. Still, there was no further
update on when we would take off and when the A/C would come on.
Almost an hour into this debacle, many passengers became
justifiably irate. We were all drenched in sweat, burning hot, and it was hard
to breathe properly. Now, let me
interject here to say this… I believe that up till now, it was actually Arik’s
policy to not turn on the A/C on their Aircrafts until take-off. I’m not sure
why, but I’ve flown on many of their local routes within Nigeria and 100% of
the time, this is always the case. The difference though is that usually, once
boarding has been completed, it only takes a few minutes before take-off
begins, and the A/C comes on pretty quickly, so while it’s unacceptable, it has
been… tolerable. In this case however, we had been on board for well over an
hour, and now passengers that had surged up front into my section actually said
people were fainting, and more people were going to pass out. It was
disastrous, to say the least.
Just before the passengers surged into my section up front
(I was in seat 1A), I actually saw the pilots pull the one foreign air hostess
into the cockpit and lock the door behind them. I suspect that either the A/C
may have been on in the Cockpit, or that he was concerned for his and her
safety because the shouting from the back indicated that people were in a state
of panic and riot. Either way, I thought his actions came off as incredibly
ignorant and prejudice against the Nigerian Staff (who were doing their
absolute best to try and calm people down), and against the very Nigerian
passengers who he was employed to take care of. As the people surged up front
and started banging on the cockpit door, the Captain made yet another
announcement that people should be patient for a few more minutes, and of
course it had been well over an hour so none of the irate passengers were having
it. He also said that if people did not go back to their assigned seats, he
would have to call the police. Of course this did nothing but provide further
incentive for people to be angry, frustrated, irate… you name it.
By this time, the entire section around my seat was filled
with screaming passengers, banging on the cockpit door and yelling at the
Nigerian Staff who were still pleading with us. I actually feared for the
safety of the Air Hostesses, and for the equipment on the plane; the captain was
not saying anything to calm people down, and would not dare show his face, and
was not hearkening to the cries of people that he should open the cabin doors
and let us out until they were actually ready to take off.
I feared that more
drastic measures were going to be taken by the irate passengers, which is why I
stood up at that point to try and calm them down. My reasoning was that I’d
been on enough Arik flights to know that this was their policy, so I didn’t
feel like the plane was not fit to fly. I suggested that seeing as we’d already
waited that long, we give them another 5-10 minutes, because if we disrupted
the flight or caused damage, they would have to kick us off and begin the
entire process from start. Some of the passengers calmed down after I spoke,
while some were just intent on fighting or doing something drastic to express
their displeasure… (one very short angry man actually tried to take out his
anger on me, but I felt bad for him so I didn’t let that escalate).
In any case, soon after that, the Captain announced he was
beginning take-off procedures, and I felt the A/C come on. This further helped
me make my case to the passengers, and most of the people started going back to
their seats. What further shocked me at this point was that the Captain
actually started taxiing the plane on the runway, while people were still
making their way back to their seats. This seemed to be both dangerous AND
illegal, in my opinion. To be fair though, it did motivate people to quickly
rush back to their seats. Including our short and irate friend who at this time
was screaming at the top of his lungs, and topless. After this though, the rest
of the flight went on incident free, thank God.
Many news agencies, upon seeing me in the footage online,
have contacted me asking for details of what happened, and my opinion on the
incident. My thoughts are as follows: it was an avoidable disaster, and one
that could have ended up much worse for the staff and equipment of Arik Air.
This policy of enclosing passengers within a cabin with no A/C is senseless; I
suspect that it saves them some money because they don’t need to rent/buy
ground power units to power the planes while they finish their operations, but
it is unfair, cruel and inhumane to the clients of the airline to subject their
comfort and even health to such conditions, all in the name of cutting costs.
A few years ago, I took this flight route on Arik Air for
the first time, primarily because I needed to be in NYC as quickly as possible
on business, and they were the only carrier that went directly with no
layovers. I was very impressed by pretty much every aspect of the flight. It
was convenient and clean; the seats were big and comfortable; the staff was
friendly and courteous; I was so impressed that for a short while, I stopped
using my usual international Carriers. The one downside at the time, was that
the food wasn’t quite the best, and there was no frequent flier mileage program.
I remember filling out a suggestion form at the time, along with some other
passengers, and we all commented that the food could be better. Shortly after
that, I was beyond impressed to find that they had changed their menu and food
supplier, and stepped up the quality to the point that it was as good, or
better than most other carriers. It felt like they were really responding to
the needs and expectations of their patrons, and I thought this was a great
start for the Airline.
I’m a proud Nigerian… and I’m a fan of all things good that
are Nigerian. We have many issues as a country, but I’ve always been of the
opinion that we have to fix ourselves. We have to police ourselves, and play
our part in changing Nigeria and making Her better. As such, whenever possible,
I try to support Nigerian owned businesses. My suits, for instance, are made by
Mai Atafo; he has impressed me so much that I now refuse to buy suits from
anywhere else in the world, because of the quality of his craftsmanship; and it
is a source of pride for me when I’m asked by colleagues, clients and fans
around the world where I got my suit from, and I’m able to tell them that it
was made by a Nigerian Designer.
Arik is currently our only airline that flies to
international cities like London and New York; however instead of being a
source of pride, they’ve allowed their standards to drop over time. There are
24 seats in my section, about 10 of them are not functional and have not been
in months. The entertainment system is a joke; there are only a handful of tv
shows and films available for viewing, and they are the same exact films/shows
that were available years ago when they started flying to NYC. They literally
have not changed the movies in YEARS. They just flat out refuse to upgrade what
they have, and seem content to let it deteriorate. There is still no frequent
flier program, even though for years they told passengers to hold on to their
boarding passes, as it would soon commence. “Soon” has taken an eternity with
no end in sight. Attention to detail is crucial, and very often, it is the
difference between greatness and mediocrity; between growth and decline,
success and failure.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out some of the positives
that the airline still has. For one, I’ve found their Nigerian staff to be very
polite, courteous and helpful. The food quality is still great - I have no
complaints on anything I’ve tasted so far, other than the fish peppersoup –
yuck! The duck however, was fantastic, as well as everything else I’ve eaten on
board. Generally speaking, their cleanliness standards have not dropped either,
thank God. And lastly, the direct flight to NYC remains as convenient as it
gets for someone like me who sometimes needs to save time spent in European
layovers.
I’ve witnessed them make positive changes before due to the
suggestion surveys passengers filled out; my hope, in writing this, is that
they do the same again, fix the issues and give us a Nigerian Airline that will
be a source of pride, not pain.
-
B.W.
PS: Not everyone needs to be in NYC like myself; I suggest
to the powers that be, to try and partner with an American carrier, so that
once you touch down in NY, you can easily transition to a local flight to take
you to your final destination.
PPS: I apologize for the extremely long article. I have even
more to say but this will have to do.

I saw the video. One woman was recounted her ordeal with Arik-Air in December. I think it is better to do all that is necessary prevent any issues beforehand.

Bank give us a rest. Am thinking my birthday 11/04/2014 you talking long story. Cheers. ENGR Emy
O WIII RE BANKY..XX
I wont be shocked if some people attack Mr Wellingtons thoughts here. Some Nigerians are just foolish and daft and even in a crumbling and collapsing system, they will prefer to 'manage' than speak out. Arik needs to improve as they've also not been too bad but of late. Nicely put out Banky.
Well said...
Air Arik is a joke I had a bad experience
In 2011 from JFK-LOS. Entertainment system were not functioning. One the cabin crew was on her make up almost throughout flight. Never again air arik
Yaaawn..yes tell us u were not in economy as if that is the issue...
as much as we appreciate this detailed feedback on what happened on that aircraft, i would suggest that research should be carried out EVEN by celebrities before they open their mouth to say something they are not sure of. Arik has a frequent flyer programme (check their website). i do not agree with their policy of not turning on the acs until they take off or how their passengers were tried on this given day however i believe that an individual should be sure of his or her facts before stating anything.
Yea and you just had to keep reiterating that you where flying 1st class with concious humility interjected. Pretentious much.
Lolllll, too funny!!! I can't wait to watch the video
You would have made a movie or music with it instead. Too long and was getting bored with it.. Thank God for your lives after all
Way too long for an opinion, more like narrating a movie, what's pur business if the man that went for your jurgular was tall or short.
Enough already on this issue

The heat must have unbearable.
Thanks for the epistle Banky
Thank you Banky. This is a mature piece. I thought we had a passenger's Bill of Rights. That is the kind of thing you rely on in these situations.
What was Banky W doing in Irik air in the first place? Now I agree that all these fake broke ass wanna be Nigeria celebrities are as poor as can be be. Oloshi.

Too bad of Arik! I'm totally claustrophobic. God knows what i'd have done if i was on that flight.
P.S: I certainly hope other Nigerian artistes can write as good as this #BankySoOnPoint
Couldn't have expressed his opinion better this - it's perfect.
its a SHAME on ARIK flight!
thanks bro, u tried to be as fair as possible. Arik pls upgrade o.
Nice one Banky! That's just wicked to keep people in a locked airplane without air conditioning
Well done Mr Wellington. Intelligent write up and on point. If Arik wants to stay in business, they better take on board(pardon the pun), everything he has said. Personally I've gone back to BA and Virgin, but who knows...
Thank u dear
This guy yarn fire..arik don't die
And Banky wrote the textbook for who to read? Better b thanking God the plane didin't crash......

Mature. ! Oya head of state chop knuckle
Having come to respect Banky's abilities as a writer, this article has simply raised the bar. Well written, polite and to the point. Your related actions in the said plane is truly commendable also. Keep up the good work even in your music. Much love Mr. W. and no apologies necessary for the length as it made for a pleasant read.
Good article but I however, disagree with you about arik staffs been polite, they are one of the rudest people I have ever seen
Good article but I however, disagree with you about arik staffs been polite, they are one of the rudest people I have ever seen
We need reforms in this bloody country, seems Nigeria is just a sh*t hole where anything goes. The aviation needs a wicked face lift and a total overhaul ASAP.
A sincere opinion i must say!
except Arik is not a Nigerian airline tho.. lol
Does he have a special section in the plane? Couldn't he have said 1st class or business class? Let him write to arik, about time these celebrities put their names to good use
Great piece BW. I actually took time to read from start to finish because of the tone of your writing, diction, punctuation, tenses and general good writing manners. First time I'm reading something worth reading from a Nigerian celeb.
I hope Arik will read this and effect all necessary changes. I haven't flown any other carrier in all my domestic flights.
Peace out.
I watched that video and must say that Banky proved himself to be the perfect gentleman; cool as a cucumber under such dense pressure. If its possible to love him more than I already do, then I do.
This Banky and his mighty head of horror see how he was stressing about food anyhow.. Chai... Bankimoon.... Anyway still love that shrek-like mighty head!!
True that
Hahahhaahahaha.... So u know say e long? Lolz!!!! I Enjoyed it sha
Banky W! I must commend you for spending your precious time to clarify/comment on this issue. i agree with everything you have pointed out 100%. Immediately I saw that video I knew what the cause of the event was because I have experienced it before. What you said about saving money for the company is right. One engine is turned on so that they can preserve fuel. They don’t want to pay for external power so that they can save money. Thirdly the flight if not full capacity tend to get to destination earlier than the scheduled time so they delay so that they don't arrive at destination too early, Remember its JFK that you pay from the time you land for packing space. Normally if that flight is full occupied they fly 11 hours or there about, but when not filled to capacity they get to Nigeria or New York in 9 hours or 9 and half hours. Last December that i used the airline took us 9.5 hrs from JFK to Lagos which is the fastest i have experienced.
I felt so disappointed when I saw the headline Banky escaped death in Arik Air.... that kind of headline is borne out of ignorance.
Arik Air management should try and follow international standards because what is worth doing is worth doing well. Am not going to advise them how to run their airline because am not paid to do that but they should know that their business is a customer based business, if they do not treat their customers with respect and dignity by rendering the services they customers paid for, they will always find alternatives. I use Arik because i normally go to the Eastern part of the state. Apart from that, there is Delta and there is United, I also have option of passing through Europe with one stopover but as you have rightly pointed out, the straight flight saves time...
The point of my write up is to commend you for clearing the air on the debacle. Kudos to you and for Arik to remain afloat, i think they need some policy changes.
On making Nigeria great I think from what you have expressed, if youths of nowadays have your kind of patriotism towards this country, we can have hope that there will be a better Nigeria tomorrow.
Speechless
Sentiments shared...great one Banky!
Well said.
Aside ur big head I knew there was a reason why I loved and still love u very much... gush! u write so well no wonder u sing well too ... we all hope Arik will heed to ur words cos u pointed out everything I"ve noticed too ... Weldon BW
Now I like this guy even more.Nice one!!
B W. GREAT TO BE NIGERIAN. WELL SAID. HOPE THE WOULD MAKE THE CHANGES. MAINTENANCE HAS ALWAYS BEEN OUR GREATEST CHALLENGE BUT WE CAN DO IT.
The worst part of the story is the pilots helping the foreign (probably white) hostess by letting her join them in the cockpit. I would pulled the bitch out before they had a chance to close the door. Fyck outta here with that shyt!
Nicely said Banky W
it is through critism, that we become better....Great write-up and response from Banky W. Yes, we need to support Nigerian businesses but like most Nigerian businesses, mediocrity creeps in when they feel that "they have arrived". Major reason we dont have great personalities bcos that is what distinguishes the good form the great.Ever wondered why we dont have a Messi or Ronaldo? not for lack of talent but the work that goes in to hone that talent to perfection.MEDIOCRITY is a disease.
i am more than inpressed with this and u ave said it all. one love
First tym reading an article this long.... Banky, yu suppose go write book, but on a more serious note this is one of those things why sometimes i regret being a nigerian...... We always blame the goverment but some of this problems are just we, i just hope goverment look into this matter and make amends.....

very well said. no hate, no downgrade, just very constructive criticism that should elicit a review of Arik air's standards and policies. weldon B.W
I was watching a show recently talking about Air disasters and got to know that a major air disaster some years back was caused by leaving the A.C on while the plane was on ground and waiting for take off. The A.C caused overheating of the cables which in turn caused a fire while the plane was in the air. After Boeing investigated the incidence and found the cause, all airlines changed their policy, so they only turn on the A.C when the plane is about to take off because it prevents the cables from overheating.
I wonder why you keep emphasizing on your SECTION BW......... we don't need all that info u know!!. well written though.
Kiss Ass
you see y banky w has to marry me..... such a gentleman ...awwwww eloquent... intelligent.. handsome.. talented... the list goes onnn.... i need me some bankole wellington
Got peaved @ those paragraphs that he sounded like a ball licker, don't blame him though.. Whatever you say today might be taken out of context just to fabricate a traffic headline....Indigenous businesses should be supported,I totally agree!!! Buh indigenous corporations should also "step -up"... Banky you neednt not use the "descriptive adjective" -(one very short man), that was so rude!!! As annoying as I get when people describe you as "big forehead/ bald headed banky"..... He disrespected you,we get it!!you shouldn't stoop to his level all because you wanna get even..#cheezyjayne
So this type of problem been dey ground dat woman come carry money go buy bullet proof car.....

Seriously, this is bad. It's not just the airlines in Nigeria but all other international businesses, they don't even treat Nigerians with dignity and respect. Well I guess it's our fault because if we know our rights as citizens and we had been suing them for it am very sure things would have gone a lot differently. In the UK without asking for it they would have handed out leaflets to claim some sort of compensation. Then the BAD Govt has added to the problem. The minister of aviation should have done something by now. Oga oh. Linda welldone
I stopped using this airline after having a horrid experience with them in 2012. I flew to New York from Chicago with my flight expected to leave New Yorks John F Kennedy Airport at 9 p.m. The flight never arrived in New York much less leave for Lagos at that time. Arik did not get us hotel rooms to stay until midnight that day. When returning back from Nigeria the flight was late and did not leave Lagos on time either. I have since stopped using Arik Airlines and now fly with Delta from Atlanta or United from Houston. I love Naija, but not the naija Crap and poor customer service. No competition breeds complacency. They have a monopolyon the Lagos New York direct route and as such have no incentive to improve. Shame.
e good make person go school shaaa !
but Banky why make it obvious to us that u took a first class seat, who cares if u sat at no1a or 51b ....u and ur big head ..lol..Arik una no dey try at all , all in the name of saving cost u want to suffocate our n|igerians..is God that saved that captain if not he would go to his place and call 911..oshi
Shalaye! Mr Capable of Providing All Details.

You can easily transit, and not you can easily transition
Banky W, your article is long but not boring. I took my time to read through all you wrote. Thanks for the explanation and hope Arik work on their management.
And to think that the owner of ARIK once critized us for not patronizing his airline, after watching this video i will not even think about it even for free, because i am ashamatic.
It's is the duty of FAAN to provide ground power unit to this Airline but no they will not do that I am not even sure if they have GPU or the have one that is faulty,if this airline request for GPU its story from FAAN.
God bless you Banky W for always speaking the truth & for your pride in being a Nigerian who speaks out on our behalf whenever you witness injustice to our people. A good name can never be bought, yours in certainly becoming one that will be greater than you already are,may God cont to bless you with the courage to speak up when we Nigerians need our voice to be heard, thank you!
Arik can delay flights tho. Same thing happened to my sister in law about 6months ago..she missed her local flight and had to pay extra... my sister encountered same thing few days ago... God help us.
this is sad, most nigerian CEOs dont know how to run a worldclass coy. HITV died just like that. it wouldnt be long before the same fate falls on ARIK

Well said Banky...but i find it very funny and borderline arrogance that u keep refferring to d business class section as "my" section...../wankwank2thumbs down/
mhyl i just dislike Arik from d bottom of my ass, i decided to be patrotic 1ce n flew dem from london to nig, the male host was so rude n look@me so condescendingly like i wz his wife@home n he was too upset to be serving me...so bad was deir service, dat even though i had a return ticket back to london, i ditched n bght a fresh ticket...dats aw much i didnt mind!!! so far d only tin deyve going for dem is d ltyl assurance that they dont crash...yet!
Banky just spoke my mind, i have been in the same situation dec 21, 2013 to london, were supposed to leave at 12noon but were held up in a plane with no AC. funny thing was, i felt it was done purposely to delay the flight cuz i and so many other passengers still saw well over 5 people board at 1pm. Cud thismean they were waiting for these passengers? i honestly dont know. The entertainment system also is soooo outdated. You can really tell the difference when you fly BA or KLM and when you fly Arik, I love arik alot, they allow me carry my 60kg and 12kg handluggage which you cant get anywhere else atleast to the UK. please they need to be more professional and handle people's lives with great care, that is the most important thing. Life 1st
You have really done well @bankyW we Nigerians need to police ourselves cos no one will do it for us. NIGERIA IS VERY IMPORTANT TO US. IT IS WE NIGERIANS THAT CAN MAKE IT WORK TO BECOME A PRIDE AND NOT A LINGERING SHAME WHERE NOTHING WORKS.
Great write up Banky, I wish this gets to the right persons. Really do not want to imagine the condition in the airplane as i am so not a fan of heat... pele o, awon Arik, ejo sha gbo nko ti Banky ti so...
Hahahahah banky dear u in the wrong ministry, biko shift frm.music to script writtin u damn good i no read any gun shots, perfectly spelt nd it made sensw

summary of it all? You want to clarify to all and sundry that you sat in Seat 1A abi?*
Nice said Banky. The part that annoyed me was they Captain raising his voice at the passengers. His is very lucky we are not in the culture of suing.
I really like Banky W, he is very real and unpretentious unlike the regular Nigerian…………….i am generalising here I know.
But this guy has spent a considerable number of his formative years in America but choses to drop the accent and speak like any regular Nigerian. I am really impressed by this and find it particularly amusing when he is interviewed by Nigerian who grew up in Nigeria and only left the country on a 2 week visit to either London or America but speak with a hybrid British-American accent. What an irony and a joke!

Arik-Air should take corrections. They should try and improve in some of the areas mentioned if not all.
Point blanck, well articulated and fair atticle. I hope they improve!
your thoughts are long Banky
Nice write up Banky..."very short angry man " lol , he was obviously not intimidated by your height...

Nice
Nice one Banky... Was wondering what became of the flight... Not that they should be excused but will however want to know the ownership structure of the plane. Was made to understand that it belongs to foreigners while Arik just wet leases..
Very well written Banky..precise and sound English. Not bored reading it all.
This nothing but ego tripping. By the way, who asked you? Journalists? Talk to them in private next time and let them do the reporting. Naijas shaa, una to form!

Wow long story. I saw the video and i know i can never fly Arik.
I cldnt read everything, yawn yawn yawn, goodnaite Linda.
don't apologize for the long epistle...We know you only highly concerned to correct Arik's negligence and lack of respect for Nigerians.
JUST THANK GOD YOU GUYS DID'NT TAKE OFF B4 THE A/C PACKED UP. IF S'THING AINT RIGHT, IT AINT RIGHT.
Awesome. Super awesome, Mr. Capable.
What a beautiful piece from Mr Capable. I have always wondered about it too when I fly and I pray this leads to improved service delivery.
One Love!
This is actually very nice of BW. I like the way he was able to balance the story. I am supposed to travel to NY with Arik in July. I did with them last year and it was not a bad experience. The issues raised by BW are very important and should be looked at by the airline and the authority in Nigeria.
We need to support our local Enterprise but they also need to live up to acceptable International standard.
The truth is that i would have sued Arik if i were on the plane, if not for anything but to teach them a bit of lesson on how to treat people. They also need to caution their staff on how to talk to people. You can imagine what the pilot said and did afterwards. That was not good.
I am also impressed with the fluent way BW made this presentation. It was nice reading the piece just like his music is soothing to the hear.
I was on an Arik flight some months ago, hadn't had time to eat cos of my last minute engagements and couldn't eat at the airport as we'll cos I checked in and almost immediately boarding started, yes I was late for check in. Anyway, we hit the air and I began seeing trolleys moving up the aisle, happy, I quickly put my tray down waiting, only for the crew to announce they will only feed women and children on the plane. It felt like it was a war time effort. Needless to say I almost died as ulcer ravaged me on that 6hour flight. Just occurred to me I could have sued them lol
Too Long Biko
Good job Banky W, I have experienced same with Arik Air, I hope they learn to correct this and improve their sevices in general. The Captain didn't help matter, you don't threaten Nigerians with Police, espeically when we are right.
thanx for this long article abi na speech. UWESE.
This is too long,, please summarise next time
lesson: do not fly arik to new york. google it. this is not the the first time they have had issues on this route. steer clear
Peter Odili owns Arik via the Ikhide brothers. All complaints should be made directly to them, after all, it is our chopped money they used to start the airline. Ye ye people. Thanks joor Banky for giving us the koko of the matter. Although you still showed us you fly business class. Efizee, naija sha!!!
Long & short story is to boycott Arik air esp the NYC route, till they sit up.Don't wait till they kill an ashmatic passenger on their flight,Imagine what would 've happened to an ashmatic passenger in that plane
Very well written article Banky , Now we wait for someone to sue, cos i saw that video and quite frankly, the pilot/administrators of the Flight reminded me of our Nigerian Leaders (insensitive, without empathy and thoughtless)while the Nigerian Passengers remind me well....Nigerians!(suffering, Clamouring,Directionless, and quick to forget and fly). Banky, if you watched this, you'd know that there is something wrong with what happened, and we MUST make a clear statement of displeasure and demand corrective action by suing, Arik Air did No Favours to anyone of the passengers because everyone paid for a service that the did not get it as promised. We must take life seriously and demonstrate it by action - You(Banky)are enlightened and u have a Voice, Sue them on behalf of the passengers and lead this in the way that shows a recourse for wrong action against our people, if not i'd be thoroughly disappointed..Nuff said!
Banky!!!! Nice writeup!!!! Hope arik learn from this
well said, baby.
well said, baby.
Pls o Banky I am a lawyer lemme sue Arik for u let's make some money out of their stupidity!!!
Awww and he has a sense of humour too. On to d matter, most Nigerian air lines are bleh!!! Wat they did, if done in a foreign country Wud incure a law suit, os of pple rili fainted, ha! And d bloody captain is fucking racist, he pulled d "oda" hostess and left d Nigerian hostesses to their fate. He shud be fired, buh knowing my country, dude is white so he ain't going no where....Smh its so clear dat Nigerians are seen as less Dan nothing. #hopeless
Banky W , why are you talking sef? Do you have shares in Arik airline?
I don't think your view is any better or more important than other passengers view because your life isn't worth more than theirs.
The only thing you succeeded in telling is is that you were in seat 1A right next to the cockpit.
Show off!!!!
Take several seats!!
Great read and way to go for a balanced report. I have never thought of using Arik.....proud naija or not.
''I actually saw the pilots pull the one foreign air hostess into the cockpit and lock the door behind them. ''
Nah! that's fucked up..
Well written piece. He itemized the issues objectively. I think Nigerians should aspire to international standards, and that we take rubbish stuffed down our throats passively which is why we keep eating it. Still, brilliant piece, in my opinion.
Arik airlines for an international flight?never again.from the business class ticket bought on promo which they conveniently forgot to mention expired after 3 months to the time they left me stranded at heathrow terminal 4 claiming 22 of us were late for check in when in reality the flight was overbooked(they ensured we were taken to the station at the airport for daring to claim our rights).i paid £400 to rebook my flight to mm.i will never use arik till I die.
Don't have to tell us ur seat number.....1A or 39A, it's still Arik
My dear Linda, Waoh! I really enjoyed reading this article. It answered a lot of questions I pondered on when I watched that video. Banky W, thank you so much for this. The likes of this young man tells me that there is hope for my beloved country. I believe that Arik PR consultants will see this well written write up and address all the issues raised therein. I also believe that if all of us, Nigerians, can look at situations objectively, speak out and proffer reasonable suggestions, we will see a lot of changes in our society. As for that pilot that, I hope Arik will reprimand him. Long live Nigeria!!!!
Kudos to banky, well said nd I hop they Learn from all this. Arik Air or wat ever they called themselves.. stupid people.
I am that "very short irate man" as you described me. Mr "gold fish head that has no hiding place". I might have lost my cool but that gives you no right to insult me. If anyone watched that video they would have seen you trying to use an object to hide your face but your head wasn't cooperating.
And who do u think u r ... Ur just any other citizen of 9ja...don't mean ur right all d time...they f'd up simple...who r u to try cover of 4 dem...ooooo its been happenin 2 u a lot of times makin u nw think dats normal ...abeg go jor...artiste,all of dem in entertainment just use dis social network age to feel like a judge or lawyer...mchw..
Why would he pull the oyinbo air hostess into d cockpit, and the naija ones he left dem in d lion's den? Ehn? So dat dey r subjected to humiliation and attack! White people will forever be racist! Awon smellos, anuofia! Pls let US boycott ARIK. I just told my agent to cancel my flight to NYC for JULY. I cannot and will never fly this AIRLINE! If they had kept those people dere for an extra minute, I swear people will die dere of heat! Thats extremely dangerous especially for asthmatic patients and people with respiratory diseases. Gush! I just cannot understand why? Cuttn cost my foot! Dint the passenger's pay? And they r freakn so expensive, stupid Arik. Banky, wo wa sorire jere! Well said...this is a well written article. If u were nt on dat flight, u av no friggn right to call d passengers barbarians! U shld stay wivout oxygen for 5mins, den come back here and tell me why d passengers should fight for survival! Stupid Arik! Mtcheew. Overland naa, iyen naa o gbadun! God, shld protect us in this country! Useless aviation system, no checks and balances! No standard! Nigeria, which way naaa?
People are so funny and hard to please. I see this as a well written unbiased article which he said he provided because knew he was on the flight and was asking. Why are you hating on him? Ehen what if he flies first class? I don't expect him to fly anything less. He can afford it. Why can't he say it? Yes he humbly stated it. You have a problem with that too? Noni and the other poster. what has his head got to do with the article? You sit behind a keyboard and hate on and bully people. When you make half the money he has, then come back and call him a big head. Ode oshi. By the way, Banky W is not my friend. I am not a superfan even though i'm familiar with his music but I hate people making unintelligent and stupid comments
Just watched the video online. And I'm really proud of how banky stepped up as a leader should and tried to calm the idiotic nicompu of d zacheus 'd man... lol at the point where the naija in banky came out (last minute of the 10min vid)... Banky, nice one tho *thumbsUp
She dey find husband now..
LMAO @ "ONE VERY SHORT MAN." THAT MADE ME ROLL ON THE FLOOR LAUGHING. HAHAHAHAHA LAUGH NOR GO KILL ME OH! THIS BANKY GUY IS HILARIOUS! I GUESS HE THREW THAT IN AS COMIC RELIEF, TRYING TO EASE UP THE TENSION OF HAVING TO READ THE WHOLE 100 PAGE OPEN-LETTER LONG ORDEAL. IT WORKED THO. I ENJOYED THE STORY.
Banky na song be this?wey de chorus well tanks for standing up for ya country dats a very nice one bro.I love my country naija.BRAVE
Did I hear somebody say "awesome" or "well said". Dumb. This guy is looking for Arik endorsement. He is just a good business man. See how he fired Skales!
Molue get a/c?
This news just got me very much interested again in the affairs of this country. first of all let me congratulate Wellington for taking up the boldness to put down this ridiculous act by arik air into an article. After watching the video I just realised that we Nigerian take serious things for granted. This act is a very serious offence and punishable by law if done by other international carriers in other countries, probably that flight would be banned from entry and exit into that country. I was almost about getting so happy and congratulating arik air for becoming an international carrier but this news has just gavingme a second thought . I am a frequent flyer on other airlines and issues like this has never submerged. We all need to do our home work to expect a better Nigeria. Am sso such CNN and other foreign news would carry this news, further spoiling the name of this country home and abroad arik air please this issues should be resolved soonest. I know we are capable of good things and this is one of it.
Hello! He hasn't said anything that makes it seem so.... aproko
This piece is well articulated, I actually read word to word n didn't notice it was lengthy bt for ur apology. Well said Banky. Arick air is stl d best in Naija for now n they really need to opt dis game to serve d patrons well.
Since noone has put forth any technical explanation on the failure of the air conditioning units of the aeroplane, i will use my professional knowledge as a pilot to give some insight to possible causes.
Arik won't have any policy not to use the air-conditioning before takeoff. There's no credible reason for doing that. During boarding and before engine start, the air-conditioning packs as they are known get their source of power from the auxiliary power unit of the airplane. This acts like the generator in your homes which provides electricity in the absence of public electricity... which in this case happen to be the aircraft engines. But in addition to the production of electricity, the APU also powers the air-conditioning packs.
However I suspect that the auxiliary power unit (APU) was unserviceable that night and the airplane was being fed electric power by the external ground power unit attached externally to the airplane. To enable air conditioning on ground the airplane would in addition, need a ground air conditioning cart which blows preconditioned air into the airplane.
Apparently that wasn't available for whatever reason on that occasion.
I also suspect the crew were foreign and naturally were just as frustrated as the passengers for this lapse. The air conditioning became effect after engine start as was reported by Banky W.
Delay to taxi out might have been due to a number of reasons but that won't be so relevant here.
If the 'heat wave' had killed somebody, or, the not-so-fit, if you like, what would everyone be saying now? Being at the back of an airless commercial bus on bad traffic days can make you feel it would have been better if you had fainted. Maybe they cried to be let out instead of dying there. In that case, they would be justified in not listening to what Banky was saying. Man nor fit form civilized dey suffocate; e suppose struggle, abeg!
I really hate white people. They smile at us but deep down they hate us and will cowardly do anything to harm us. Yet we treat them like kings and many blacks will rather even have white friends than blacks.
Wetin self? Banky W nor need to boast where e sit down put. Where we expect say e go dey before? Abeg e just dey put story, e nor dey boast.
Stop forming! You still wouldn't have read it even if it was an exam topic from your lecturer. Mchew!
Arik air, always known for delays all the time.My experience wt them anytime I travel it's not always a good one.I almost wrote a very insulting letter to d management but withdrew on a second thot. They are not worth my time.
Thank Banky W...
This why i refuse to fly ARIK despite the luggage allowance of 70lbs. I rather do a layover than go thru this crap....
Banky , if I were to be eating in Nigeria like you, I would be proudly Nigerian.
My exact thought! Am lookn at it from the health&Safety perspective. They could av killed anyone with respiratory dx/ terminal illness on dat plane. 1hr wivout air(oxygen)! Crazy! All of them should be well compensated! And I just can't get over d tot of dat pilot pulln d only foreign air hostess into d cockpit for safety! Like really? We r bin treated like animals in our own country! Damn Arik! Smellos!
All I can say is that this negro still flew that plane!! Whether intentional or not ain't no way I would have gotten on that jet I love my life than to have it decided by a bunch of locos!!
Banky am very proud of what you did.
You just made a description of yourself... well except that you are not a celebrity. It's important that you read before making a comment! Olodo oshi @ "Irik"
Pleasant read indeed it is.Am proud of this article/post.keep it up Banky
PEOPLE NO GO COMMENT NA,AS NONE OF THEM COMMENTERS DON EVER ENTER PLAIN B4 BUR IF NA ABOUT KIM NA DEM GO SHOUT.SMH FOR UNA.GUD TALK JARE BANKY
LMAO, LROTF@ "see your head like roll on"
dont know why anyone will use a Nigerian airline to London or NYC.Just thank your stars that the plane didnt crash. Not to say that the foreign airliners are without faults but i dont think they wud ve locked up passengers to be cooked in their aircraft.
We ,Nigerians should learn the habit of suing! The Arik airline should be sued for damages!!!! and the foreign captain sacked and sued if possible. Stupid buffoon!
Noni,.why are you hating on the guy. Its his money,he can buy whatever seat he wants and the last time i checked, there is freedom of speech, so he can loud his first-class ticket from the rooftop.
Why are you so hateful? This is pure envy, you even had to insult him, how dare you?. You find it so difficult to construct simple english sentence but you had to insult an intelligent gentleman from traveling first-class.
What you don't appreciate never come your way. Don't be surprised if you never get to travel first-class in your lifetime, you planted the seed of hatred.
Envy is like cancer, it eats u up and suck you dry. Appreciate other people and their successes...and you will see how life will begin to smile on you.
U are obviously an airkstaff muntula. I fly airk all the time and wat he recounted is all true. What the hell is wrong with people. Bcos they pay you doesn't mean u have to attack someone saying the obvious truth. Leave that to the PRs, at least they are paid well for that. Vegetable
Lol bona we know you are short. Sorry
Its an international policy now. Nothing comes on till the plane is off the ground. In the US, even the air staff arent paid per hour anymore. they are only paid for the amount of time the plane is in the air. The airline companies are trying to cut as much cost as possible.
Well said Banky
Lecturer caught on camera Doing IT with Female student
Nice write-up..Banky impresses me a lot whenever I hear him share his opinions.
Always talking frm d anus. Paid 2 say wat he experience abi? U ds primary 1C student.
he who calls his brother a fool shall be in danger of hell MATTEW 5:22/ beware.of abusive language you brandish here
Fucking bastard how else dk u want him to say it,he was on the flight fool..
He no reach to talk,u papa Don fly for plane b4? Neva tried economy b4, ve some class bitch
Kudos to Banky. I'm really impressed with his write-up and I have a suspicion that we will see some changes from Arik very soon. I usually do Delta direct from/to ATL as I've had a horrible experience with Arik. Delta has issues too but they are not as bad as Arik and if they try this nonsense, at least the passengers can seek redress in a US court.

You're daft is all I can say. Did you read the piece at all retard?
Banky Talk true how much did ARIK give you for you to speak up for them..
Banky talk true how much did ARIK pay you to speak for them...When did you become their spokesperson.
You don't want banky to talk about the section he was but you blab about buying a new ticket cos the 'male host' looked down on you,to me that's unsolicited info...
lol you know this!!!
When reasonable people comment, all I can do is just to click LIKE
Arik needs a lot of work sha.In 2012 i had a flight on arik from Lagos to NYC.Flight was supposed to be by 3pm n check in by 12pm...But d flight dint leave till 3am..we were all sitting arnd the airport frustrated for close to 15 hours...wasnt a funny experience at all.I applaud Banky's effort not to tarnish Arik's name while stating their short comings at d same time.
If you don't have much to say at times just shut up and read...what's wrong with his event analysis? if its too long, we're u coerced to read it?
Plz fact number one. Arik are wrong in trying to steam some people. And they should print leaflets informing people about their frequent flyer programme. Most of us wouldn't how that it's available even if we go on the website.
Well said Banky, appreciate the time you put into this.
Watching the video reminded me of another near mutiny after we boarded an Arik plane with reg no 5N-MJE (Code named: McTighe) to Abuja on the 24th of January 2014. After the doors were shut and the cabin crew had completed their routine dances, the plane still did not move. About 30 mins later and after futile attempts by the captain to get the engines started, the doors were opened for a team of Lufthansa engineers to board the plane and swapped seats with the Captain and First Officer of the plane. At this point, passengers got up and started filing out of the opened plane, the captain's attempts to calm us down yielded no fruit until he gave the instruction to disembark. Another plane carried us to Abuja about 1 hour later while engineers were still working to fix the 'McTighe'. We thank God the engine faults (or whatever caused them not to start in the first place)didn't develop while the plane was gaining altitude or cruising at 36,000Ft above sea level and where no Lufthansa Engineer could have boarded. Surely, somebody certified the 'McTighe' as fit to fly that same morning! God help us!!!
Well written Mr. Wellington.
There is no frequent flyer program for Arik and people have suggested this to them for years. They still have movies like GI Joe ( the very very first one) that they have been showing in flight for more than two years!
I agree with you 100%, there's so much potential for this airline but its being ruined by their own mediocrity and nonchalance.
Arik is usually cheaper than SAA going to Johannesburg for example, they board at about the same time but you can always see that the SAA queue is way longer (better patronage). Arik please wake up.
Nice one Banky.... Lol, Haters-Y'all can't be great.
Lots of uncultured people leaving comments, pls be informed before you speak. Those saying Banky used ARIK - cant you read? Its the only DIRECT flight to NYC from Nigeria. Damn!! I fear for our generation, lots of literate "illiterates". Also ARIK isn't cheap so dnt be deceived.
My 1 cent, until Nigerians start to sue - customer service will continue to be crappy! I applaud the families of the DANA air crash who refused the compensation and sued DANA. Let them learn, I'm also glad that the NIS saga is headed that way. This business as usual needs to stop.
