Arik apologizes to passengers on flight from LOS-JFK on March 31st

On March 31th, passengers on an Arik flight from Lagos to New York were subjected to hardship as there was almost an hour flight delayed departure plus the airplane's air condition was not working, leading to passengers protesting on board. (Read here). The Airline company has issued a statement this morning apologizing for the discomfort and inconvenience. Their statement below...
To all guest who travelled on flight W3107 (from Lagos, Nigeria to JFK, New York) on 31st March 2014, Arik Air offers an unconditional apology, for the inconvenience and discomfort caused by both the 55 minute delayed flight departure and the failure of the airplane’s air-conditioning system prior to said departure. Continue...

In this regard, the experienced schedule delay was a result of complications related to the cargo loading process as managed by Arik Air’s contracted ground-handling agent. Unfortunately, whilst efforts were rightly being expended to overcome the cargo loading difficulties, the backup air conditioning unit (which should have been provided by our ground handling agent) was declared unserviceable and thus unavailable for use.  Upon resolution of the cargo loading difficulties, the air-conditioning system was finally restored as the aircraft prepared for immediate departure under its own engine power.

Arik Air, and its Management, acknowledges that the handling of the situation on board was less than satisfactory and falls well short of the high standards of service that its esteemed travelling guest have come to expect of us (and which we demand of ourselves).  Arik Air’s Management wishes to assure our esteemed guests that the necessary remedial measures have been initiated to prevent the repetition of such an incident to the extent possible/controllable.

Arik Air is committed to providing a safe and comfortable air transport service to every guest and on every journey. Arik Air wishes to thank all guests who endured this inconvenience patiently, despite both the trying circumstance and the unfortunate exhibition of aggression, to both people and property, by a minority of unruly passengers onboard the aircraft.

Arik Air values, greatly, its relationship with her guest.  Hence, to all the affected guests, please note that we intend to pursue the restoration of the trust and faith vested in us by your good-selves.  In this respect, Arik Air shall be contacting each affected guest on flight W3107 31st March 2014, to express these sentiments (and seek such restitution of trust) individually.

Once again, please accept our humble and sincere apologies. You and your patronage are dear to us.  We exist to serve you and we look forward to doing so again in the near future.

For and on behalf of
The Management Team

The back up air conditioner is never good. On a flight from Heathrow to Lagos 22nd Feb, though we took off on time, but in the time I entered the aircraft waiting for take off, the heat was so much that folks had to use the safety manual for hand fans.

Good way to start, Arik, but shouldn't the passengers have been somewhat informed before they had to protest ("medicine after death"). And could it also be necessary to explain or send an apology out to the passengers on d flight to Heathrow (on Thursday the 3rd) who were ill-treated on landing?!
P/S: I did appreciate the direct flight myself, to d US, but y'all really need to work on the entertainment. Both trips, my tv didnt work (and it's not like I got a discount on my flight lol)

See these bastards still saying unruly minorities,oh my people it's time to nip the wings of Arik,u closed people numbering 200+ in a small space with no air and u expect them to sit still and continue drinking lukewarm water...they must be on cheap crack..

Unknown said...

Thank God its not really a life threatening situation and nothing happened to anyone. They should make sure they improve

To me this is not an apology but giving excuse to your incompetence. You call people that have been locked up for more than 30 minutes without air or ventilation "unruly"? oh really? Our government have to get up and defend her citizens from all sort of dehumanisation. This apology is not accepted, they are not truly sorry, they are just trying to save their faces and business. Rubbish!!

Nomal Nigeria way, pass d blame to some1 else,If sme minor had had a heat stroke, this is how Arik would have ended it.I blame people that fly Arik on international routes,d airline isn't yet ready 4 such distance....

Are these guys for real? Unruly passengers? How dare they say that? While, the apology is appreciated, where do they get off calling people that reacted to such a situation "unruly"? While I agree that it may have been handled differently, they have no right to "tag" them unruly. Let's not forget that they resolved to aggression because they were not getting any sort of explanation...they felt like "hostages"

Arik air is the worst airline I have flown on. The executive management are the daftest business men in the whole world. Their stupidity beggars belief and they have no business operating an airline. Have they ever apologised for operating a lottery system in terms passenger TV screens? For those who don't know if the TV screen in your passenger seat is not working, you are on your own.
The flight attendants are clueless as they never manage customers expectations. Their local flights are always delayed. In fact, they are a bloody disgrace. Until a new executive management is in place, I do not think that things will improve

What kind of PR is this when they found a way to still insult some of the passengers. I guess it would have been better if one of them passed out.
I do not blame them, every service provider believes they can get away with anything in Nigeria because of the docility of the people with their "God dey and make we manage am culture"

To he'll with these guys! They talk as if this was an isolated incident. Everytime i've ever flown Arik there's been one issue or another..and they have ALWAYS had a minimum of 2hrs delay...ALWAYS! I have flown with them on a direct flight to Nigeria where the entertainment system wasn't working so we had to keep staring at each other for 12hours. On my return to newyork, the entertainment system was working..but they only had movies from the early 90's. The service was poor..the hostesses were agressive..one almost fought my wife even. So what are they going on about now? I don't care if your tickets cost $100 return..U will never see a red cent from me again. Useless fucking airline. I wonder who issued the idiots a license. Pls I flew from NY to Lag on Arik abt two yrs ago. There was a 4 hr delay (although we didn't wait on the plane) and the in-flight entertainment system did not work. I was told it was a one-off situation. Guess what, same thing happened on my trip back. So I now give my money to non Naija carriers when I travel.
These ppl need to be COMPENSATED.

Anonymous said...

Wat sort of an apology is this? Wat does he mean by unruly? So they ought to hv kept quiet n pretended that it was all gud? 55 mins delay, yeah right! Like it wasn't too long a time. Arik is jst a hot mess.

Anonymous said...

I stopped flying Arik in 2012 when i realised their scale at the check-in counter has been tampered with. Was flying from heathrow terminal 4 - Lagos only for me to be told i have to pay for extra luggage. I was so sure i didn't exceed the quota. Well, i took my bag to Alitalia's scale which is next to arik and i was right. I told the guy in charge i won't pay a dime and if he is so sure my bag is overweight, that he should get the airport security. Well, the guy passed my luggage as expected as most passengers where busy sweating it out with the scale.

Anonymous said...

The passenger's should a joint class lawsuit against Arik and then let's see if they wud be called unruly

toyeen said...

If pple boycott Arik for just one month, they'll sit up and sort themselves out. How can they call some passengers 'unruly'??? It's only in Nigeria that u get away with things like ds. Kai!! Can't imagine BA or Emirate tendering dat kinda apology. Their PR person shld be sacked for adding that comment and replying 8 days after it happened. Se na bcos d video went viral, abi? Stupid people. Pschewwww

OMG i was just about to write a review about arik!!! and i found this!!!!
SO... I CAME FROM LONDON TO LAGOS YESTERDAY AND THE FLIGHT WAS MEANT TO BE FROM 21.30 (9.30PM) THE FLIGHT WAS DELAYED FOR 3 HOURS.

AND I JUST RAISED MY VOICE SAYIGN "EXCUSE ME!" THEN SHE WALKED BACL AND SAID: OH SORRY MA, PLS IM BUSY ILL BE WITH U SHORTLY" WELL.. SHE NEVER CAME BACK.

MY SCREEN WAS NOT WORKING I MEAN THE SMALL SCREEN TO WATCH MOVIES... A GUY I WAS SITTING BESIDE SAW I WAS SOOO ANGRY AND HE ASKED ONE OF THE AIR HOSTESS IF SHE COULD HELP FIX IT.

THE NEXT THING SHE SAID TO HIM WAS: '' YOU ARE LUCKY YOUR SCREEN IS EVEN WORKING" I SWEAR THAT WAS EXACTLY WHAT SHE SAID..... I WAS IN SHOCK....
SO I DECIDED TO SLEEP MY ANGER OFF...... THEN I ASKED HER FOR BLANKET.... SHE SAID SHE DIDNT HAVE ENOUGH I WAS LIKE OK COOL.. 10 MINS AFTER I SAW HER WALKING WITH SOME BLANKET LIKE SHE WENT TO GET MORE.... I AM SOOOOOOO UPSET I SPEN OVER 800 POUNDS.... I AM PIIIIIIIIISSSSEEDDDDDD!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Exactly my thoughts o! Why on earth will you send an open apology to ur CUSTOMERS and still insult them by calling them unruly and aggressive! What led to the aggression? My God! And this is supposed to have been proofread by the media team of the airline or some managers and they felt it was a great write up? It's a humongous shame to the airline to still insult their customers for their (arik airline) inefficiency! How dare they do that! Have they not heard about how phrase the customer is always right? And in this case they actually are right. Subject people to such dehumanizing condition and u still have the audacity to call dem unruly! Business owners in Nigeria should understand that w without the customers there can NEVER be any business. And I think arik air should write another apology letter apologizing for calling their customers unruly! And people here are applauding them for apologizing and still insulting them at the same time

Anonymous said...

Pls what is better in these arrogant statement "unruly passengers onboard the aircraft". Whose fault was it that Arik management failed in their duty of care which they owe to all their passengers. Now a passenger who is protesting b/c his constitutional right was trampled upon is now described as unruly by the same person who is apologising for hving breached on the passengers' constitutional freedom. What a shameless way of apologising! Its high time we Nigerians understand that when you fail to know who you are, then you have failed as a person. And denial of any nigerian's constitutional right is an abuse on the nation.

If Ya'll read through the letter , I think if I was on that flight , this niccurs will be hearing from my lawyers. Calling some of the passengers unruly? unfortunate exhibition of aggression, to both people and property, by a minority of unruly passengers onboard the aircraft. Nigerians have been taken for a fool . Without this Unruly passengers , your thriving business would be dead like Nigerian airways .. My last experience with Arik , was one which I gave testimony in church as God saved us that day .. Even if Arik was N10 for a 20 hour flight , I rather enter BRT .

Rubbish! What kind of apology is that? They were even trying to castigate the passengers that tried to break out. What an insulting and condescending tone for an organization. Very unprofessional. Why wouldn't they try to break out? So they should all sit there silently while they die one by one, right? I mean, how can you lock hundreds of people in an air-tight/enclosed area with heat and lack of fresh air/ventilation? And none of your staff had the brain cells to at least advice customers about what's going on, open doors to allow some form of ventilation, let them off the plane while maintenance was still going on; nothing! They were just left there roasting, clueless about everything, behind locked doors as if in prison. And you have the guts to call them 'unruly'? The supposed apology didn't mention anything about refund, partial refund, future discount for passengers etc; instead some passengers were insulted and airline seems more concerned with continous patronage by customers and restoring the trust customers have in them. How? Which trust when you lack integrity and common sense to start with? Plus you're rude and unprofessional with it. #ridiculous!

The Arik Air management lied about the 55 minutes they claimed to be the length of the delay. I was on my seat by 11.50 pm, and there was no a/c then. The pilot said he was switching the systems on at 12.57am. It was actually at 1:10am that he finally announced rudely, "the air conditioning has been switched on and will be on for the next eleven hours!"... I have stopped flying on arik locally. This return flight may be my last on their international routes. It's so unfortunate that they are the ones to represent Nigeria on such a convenient route as the LOS- NYC direct pairing...

I totally disagree with the explanation/cause of the incident that Arik offered through their apology....

December 2013, I flew in the same Aircraft to JFK and Returned January 2014. On both ways both departure from Lagos and JFK, we had a two hour delay. one hour after security checks and additional 1 hour after boarding the aircraft.

and when inside the aircraft the airconditioning WAS NOT TURNED ON. As banky W wrote, I think its a matter of policy not that there was any fault or unserviceable as they put it. They only turned on the A/C when they commenced take off procedures. Arik should position themselves as a good company and stop the lies. December same ground cargo handling delays was given as excuse, by April they are still giving same excuses, give me a break, don't they have managers?, who is advising them??????

As i said earlier, if they (Arik) don't change their policies which they adopt in order to save money, people will find alternative airlines.... and it could be worse still if a better airline starts flying JFK.....its for their own good...cause am not a shareholder and am not paid to advise them how to operate their business.
