President Jonathan suspends CBN governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi

President Jonathan has suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and has appointed an acting Governor, Dr Sarah Alade, the most senior Deputy Governor of the CBN. This was made known in a State House Press Statement released this morning. Find it below...
Having taken special notice of reports of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria and other investigating bodies, which indicate clearly that Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi’s tenure has been characterized by various acts of financial recklessness and misconduct which are inconsistent with the administration’s vision of a Central Bank propelled by the core values of focused economic management, prudence, transparency and financial discipline;
Being also deeply concerned about far-reaching irregularities under Mallam Sanusi’s watch which have distracted the Central Bank away from the pursuit and achievement of its statutory mandate; and

Acting Governor, Dr Sarah Alade
Being determined to urgently re-position the Central Bank of Nigeria for greater efficiency, respect for due process and accountability, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has ordered the immediate suspension of Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from the Office of Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

President Jonathan has further ordered that Mallam Sanusi should hand over to the most senior Deputy Governor of the CBN, Dr Sarah Alade who will serve as Acting Governor until the conclusion of on-going investigations into breaches of enabling laws, due process and mandate of  the CBN.

The President expects that as Acting Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Alade will focus on the core mandate of the Bank and conduct its affairs with greater professionalism, prudence and propriety to restore domestic and international confidence in the country’s apex bank.

The Federal Government of Nigeria reassures all stakeholders in Nigeria’s financial and monetary system that this decision has been taken in absolute good faith, in the overall interest of the Nigerian economy and in accordance with our laws and due process.

It is a shame that this hypocritical President who did not have the spine to sack Stella Oduah in a glaring case of corruption, this rogue President that has not made any effort to investigate or wade into the several billion dollars unaccounted funds in NNPC can suddenly quickly wake up to the need to suspend the whistle blower on his shady deals over unfounded allegations. Barawo, you will hear from us in 2015.

#Copied-- I'm actually shocked. So, we can conclude that Lamido Sanusi has been telling the truth and the presidency is involved in the corruption?" Sanusi is suspended for exposing corruption. Same happened to Bashir Gwandu at NCC. Also to Yushau Shuaib at NEMA when he criticised NOI. I weep for My nation...

I watched on the news the other day during the NNPC missing fund hearing when he was arguing with madam economy and i concluded that he was very incompetent to handle this position in the first place. Madam economy was virtually teaching him in front of the House of Reps members who were shocked at some of the findings and misconceptions he had put forward to them.

My dear Mr. President,
Your advisers will only plunge you into deeper waters.i see that the administration will do everything and anything to cover up the issue of the missing monies.
There might be discrepancies in the figures but whatever the actual figure is,can the minister of petroleum, the GMD and the coordinating minister for the economy please advise and answer us.
Your strategy is obvious, you need to get mallam sanusi out of the office so you can go in to cover up.
Sanusi maybe a loud mouthed man,but he's the best thing that has happened to our banking sector in decades.
Once more Mr president, you have got it wrong.
They say "he who the gods want to kill, they first run mad"

BONARIO NNAGS said...

Posterity will never be fair on this administration
I find it laughable the grounds on which they found Sanusi guilty, doesn't it make mockery of our fight against corruption when found we it easy to relieve a man who raised an alarm over the impunity going on in the NNPC of his duties, while it took the protest and clamour of almost every Nigerian for the president to reluctantly late Oduah go.
Am not even talking of the likes of Aruma Oteh and Deziani.
Oh! Poor Lamido Sanusi,I know what gave you away,it was your conscience, yes your conscience because if you were able to subdue the persistent shout of your conscience and tow the path of presidential rotweilers like Labaran maku and Nyesom Woke, whose efforts were rewarded with an additional portfolios of supervising ministers, you wouldn't ended up being suspended. And even at retirement you might be sent to another FG establishment as compensation.
You choose to expose corruption, but who told you such works in Nigeria. Haven't you heard of cases where people were sent to jail for reporting a crime to the police?
Haba! I heard you're a highly principled man and very religious too,but u forgot this is Nigeria and a GEJ administration, where financial corruption is only a term relative to internet frauds by young boys and petty financial crimes.
Now that Sanusi is gone,
Who will then keep Nigerians abreast of all NNPC financial misconducts?
Who will then tell the common man what actually happened to the purported Kerosene subsidy fund?
Who will then look the GMD of NNPC straight in the eye and tell him "you goofed sir" ?
Who will tell us the actual condition of the economy when Okonjo Iweala will be confusing us with figures.
We will surely miss you Mallam.

While stating reasons and manners in which the CBN Governor is to be removed from office, Section 11(2f) of the CBN Act 2007, says:

“The Governor, Deputy Governor or Director shall cease to hold office in the Bank if he: (a) becomes of unsound mind or, owing to ill health, is incapable of carrying out his duties; (b) is convicted of any criminal offence by a court of competent jurisdiction except for traffic offences or contempt proceedings arising in connection with the execution or intended execution of any power or duty conferred under this Act or the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act; (c) is guilty of a serious misconduct in relation to his duties under this Act; (d) is disqualified or suspended from practicing his profession in Nigeria by order of a competent authority made in respect of him personally; (e) becomes bankrupt; (f) is removed by the President: Provided that the removal of the Governor shall be supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate praying that he be so removed.”

The handlers of the president are actually babies in politics and basic PR. They just made a martyr out of Sanusi Lamido. It would now look, even to a teenager, that he was relieved of his duties due to the pending allegations against elements of this idiotic government. Why would a government keep strengthening the opposition to itself by intentionally directing sympathy to its accusers? We’ve never had it this bad in Nigeria. Sad, ominous day.

Bona, you are one person whose analytical comments made me to start commenting on this blog. However,I disagree with the manner in which you are basing your argument. The minister of finance knows the beaucracy that is associated with her office and also how to manage it professionally. She is one person whose image and competency cannot be tarnished by even President Jonathan.Sanusi on the other hand,is a raging bull in a china shop. His utterances and actions shows that he is overwhelmed by his job as CBN governor. If he was a man of honour, he should have resigned his position, and then go ahead to criticize Jonathan as much as he wanted. Something similar happened between President Fernandez of Argentina, and the equivalent of their CBN governor. The latter resigned, because he cannot engage in a battle of supremacy with the president of Argentina. Make no mistakes about my comment,I am not calling GEJ a saint.Infact, most of his actions lives much to be desired, but I believe he is right on this one.

Sanusi may have brought this issue to light but lets all get this straight, its not among the Mandate of CBN.

Even Sanusi hammering on introducing N5,000 note made me realize he had gone rogue, trying to introduce easier ways for the northerners to transport money.

As for what he did for the banks, thank you Sir, but one thing I have learnt is that rather than fight with your leader, do your job right and try to get your leader to warm up to you, then he can listen to you.

He made an allegation backing it with documents.its left for the accused to put forward documents backing their rebuttal.they haven't been able to successfully convince us.rather they have gone from one excuse to the other.
There may have been discrepancies in figures (which is understandable cos these figures aren't originated from CBN) but is the answer for Mr president to remove the whistleblower.the culpable people need sanusi out so they can go in to remove the evidence.
This isn't the way forward.Mr president has just created a situation whereby people in leadership with genuine intentions will keep quiet so they can keep their jobs.
I hope Igor, that you are a lot more informed than earlier otherwise go back to school.

Fmr,Gov.Sanusi was consistently inconsistent during his tenure due to his over zealous and loud mouthed nature. He did not conduct himself as a CBN Governor. He is arrogant and exhibits a position of an untouchable . Let him not vacate the office until June as once said and see if the arms of the law will not deal with him. How long shall we remain with a man who runs CBN as a personal affair? He is never sure of his figures. what a Banker.
Mr. President has taken the right step before Sanusi plung the country into serious integrity problems.

Igor, like I wrote, apologies for using the word dumb.its not in reference to your person but to your actions via your words.i believe you are speaking from a sentimental point of view.
I do not agree that he should resign.he has a few months to go.why allow a politician ruin his hard earned professional status.
Secondly Igor,we can't all stay out of the business of governance if we expect to move this country forward.a few of us on this blog should come together to see where and how we can add quality service to our country.

We do not care about the person (sanusi) @anon i work with cbn u wld have done worse in dat position.is he a reformer? Yes.does he know his job? Yes.is money missing? Yes.has the missing money been found? No.thats the problem In this country. We don't treat issues we personalise everything. 20 billions dollars isn't beans . Since we can't find it every one involved in the issues shld be suspended till found. That what sensible and right thinking countries do.if u were sacked because of policies of a particular person blame d govt .because they put him and they are responsible for every policy he makes. And u voted(rigged) them in.

U accuse someone of being dumb wen in actual sense u are d dumb one. A cbn governor who's accusing d nnpc 4 financial irregilarities nd he himself is not sure of d figure. Dis man has changed d amount over 4 times, so who shuld we trust, d cbn governor who isn't sure of the amount or the nnpc who say there's no irregularity 4rm their returns to the government . He's d cbn governor and there a proper way to go about such controversies without making it public. He deserves 2 b sacked not suspended. He shuld learn 2 make his fact right before pointing the accusing fingers. U calln someone dumb, access ur self to make sure u aren't d dumb one.

If they don't suspend him how do you expect them to loot the treasury for 2015 election, since Sanusi is not supporting them. however the $20b missing could be part of their budgeted funds for 2015 election campaign and Sanusi is already raising alarm over it.. so, my fellow Nigerians they just have to sack him to make way for them and mark my words more revelations on the way....... i dey laffff ooo

I have read a whole lots of comments here as usual, but have decided to reply to BONARIO NNAGS and also Igor comments respectively: @BONARIO NNAGS, I use to think that you are well informed and.., but today, I tell you; you put me in a big doubt. And again I must commend you @ Igor; you have a good sense of reasoning. I am not trying to be sentimental here, but rather to tell us that when we are commenting on serious issues like this, we should do it with adequate sense of reasoning and flirted information. You do not write because you have freedom of speech and all that. If I must say, Bonario is really lost in this matter, yet he took his time to pen down lots of words and these words are very sensitive and can be instigating as well. The LCM of my talk here is "we should please be well informed before we make public comments". God Bless Nigeria!. Long live Our President!! God bless Nigerians!!!

I have simply stopped commenting on Nigeria's intransigent and wobbled administration. But I have to talk about Sanusi's removal. Because a man was confident enough to step up and expose the rot in Jonathan’s administration, they vilify and victimize him.
I read the report by Sanusi on why Nigeria’s foreign reserve refuses to increase despite consistent global rise of oil prices. The report contains spiraling details which specifically brings the NNPC and some oil venture dealers into focus. All Jonathan could do is to remove him for ‘failing to focus on economic management and monetary policy expected of a Central Bank’.
All this is becoming messy and Jonathan stands in the middle of it all. The twist of this, in the political sense is that, Sanusi’s removal will only upscale his admiration from Nigerians and more hate for the government. All these only depict a government struggling with ideological, populist and electoral legitimacy against the 2015 election.

slowflamez said...

I knew it would result to this. Jona should just remember power doesn't last forever, I wonder what's goin to happen to him if he leaves d corridors of power..

You are the one that needs going back to school. If u don't understand issues better keep quiet than making misleading comments. You don't have all the information so please save us the half truth. CBN Governor is a very sensitive and important position and unguarded utterances from the office holder is very dangerous. He lost focus and he should have done the honourable thing by resigning.

Na wa ooooo. COT gone will have a negative impact on the revenue streams of banks and one of the implications maybe loss of jobs in the sector. We need to find ways of creating jobs and not ways of loosing them
